Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes celebrates scoring the opening goal. Photograph: Martin Rickett/PA After a dour start this became the Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial show. Each have the quality Manchester Unitedrequire to
challenge for a Champions League place, this win lifting them up twoplaces to fifth.
Both scored while showing their teammates how to turn a contest. In the closing stages Mason Greenwood caught on, starting and finishing a move for the 11th goal of the 18-year-old’s breakthrough season, the final pass to him coming from Fernandes. It is more than a year since United have claimed three consecutive league victories and they go to Everton on Sunday searching to end this run. “I hope because there are four big league games coming up – Everton, Manchester City, Tottenham and Sheffield United,” Ole Gunnar Solskjær said. BRUNO FERNANDES VOWS TO GET UNITED INTO CHAMPIONS LEAGUERead more
The manager changed two from last Monday’s win at Chelsea – Victor Lindelöf replaced Eric Bailly and Greenwood came in for Brandon Williams – while Nigel Pearson’s only adjustment from adraw at Brighton
15 days ago was a preference for Craig Dawson in place of AdrianMariappa.
The contest nearly began awfully for United when Nemanja Matic and Harry Maguire dithered, allowing Troy Deeney a sight of David de Gea’s goal but he fluffed the chance. “A shambles,” said Solskjær of the mix-up. United are flaky in defence because of the gap often allowed between rearguard and midfield. Sensing this, Roberto Pereyra skated forward and found Gerard Deulofeu to the left, he passed to the unmarked Abdoulaye Doucouré and the home team were lucky he could not finish. Profligacy was becoming a theme. The next to show a blunt edge was Aaron Wan-Bissaka. This time the chance came when Daniel James’s cross was parried to the right-back’s feet but he shot into the sidenetting.
Images
It was a bits-and-pieces contest that lacked a touch of class where it mattered. Even Martial wildly ballooned a 25-yard effort. At least, though, the buildup impressed: a Maguire challenge winning the ball, Fred then being fed and racing over halfway, before Martial becameinvolved.
At the 30-minute mark came a collector’s item: a curving Doucouré shot that De Gea had to fling himself right to save. James and Fred then added to the number of spurned opportunities: both firing overthe bar.
Then came the breakthrough via a slick James ball that slipped in Fernandes. He swerved around Ben Foster and the keeper brought him down to concede a penalty. Fernandes took this with the swagger United have missed in recent years: an odd-looking hop straight up in the air sent Foster to his right before he slotted a first goal for United. As the break approached he could and should have had a second but spooned wide fromMartial’s pass.
Still, that was Fernandes’s 13th straight penalty converted in top-flight football and neatly set up United for the second half. Yet when Luke Shaw conceded a corner disaster came close to striking when it was delivered from the right and Deeney bundled home. Yet as at Chelsea (twice) VAR saved United: Dawson was adjudged – correctly – to have elbowed the ball on to the left post before hiscaptain’s finish.

If this caused inevitable glee from United fans, the emotion was nearly superseded by jubilation when James – in his best display for a while – played in Greenwood. The teenager’s pivot-and-pass across Foster’s goal was inviting and Adam Masina was relieved toclear.
What came next was a Martial special. The centre-forward had been quiet before waking to show his killer instinct. Fernandes was the craftsman, threading the ball through, and Martial the artist. When Foster blocked his initial shot the 23-year-old was in a cul-de-sac manned primarily by Étienne Capoue. Yet Martial performed a drag-back that left the Watford player a spectator before, from under Foster’s nose, he chipped a third goal from three games in the last seven days. Solskjær said: “I am delighted with the week Anthony has had. He has got his critics and I am one of the biggest. The skill for the goal is just mind-blowing.” If he trusted his left foot he might have hit Fernandes’s free-kick home for a third. Maguire, too, was gifted a golden chance – again from Fernandes – with a clear header but fluffed his big moment. Yet Greenwood’s emphatic strike, pin-balling off the frame of the goal, sent United and their fans home even more content. The Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email.MATCH STATS

Thought Luke Shaw had a really good game. His defensive positioning seems to have improved quite a bit recently and he’s looking a lot more confident on the ball. That one-two with Dan James in the build-up to Martial’s goal was impressive in particular.Reply

James is not good enough though. He would not get a game for any top club in Europe yet at United, he is consistently on the team sheetnearly every game.
I do not get it.
James is fast: that is about it in my opinion. He rarely beats his man, his crosses rarely beat the forst man, he doesn´t track back often, he is not a goal threat. Please inform what he brings to a top team, I would love to know whatI am missing.

Shaw was outstanding today. He saved at least two very likely Watford goals as the last man, and had by far the best positioning of any of our defenders today. I'm beginning to wonder if our best defence is Williams-Shaw-Bailly-Wan Bissaka? Shaw does well in central defence as well, and today, he effectively covered there for Lindelöf and Maguire _both_ when they were all at sea, despite having his positionat left back.

He draws fouls because of his sheer pace, doesn't give the ball away like Pereira or Lingard, certainly not as frequently, and his off the ball movement means he can occupy defenders which frees up the centerof the pitch.

I’ve been guilty of growing tired of Martial’s performances recently, however in true commentators curse style, he has quickly reminded me that he has the talent. The application could well come from building this squad to live up to his expectations. Not the way it should be but if we are going to the best of him then hopefullyit’ll be soon.

Yup. Intelligent too. Towards the end of the first half, when United really weren't playing well, he just figured out the best way for him to influence the game would be to hang out on the left and create and overload with James. Pretty much straight away we created two or three decent chances which resulted in the penalty. I could be wrong but I don't think that was tactical instruction from the bench, just Bruno having a really good sense of where he could dodamage.

Disagree here. When Klopp started out, our first top 4 finish was quite the achievement. If Man U get into CL after an injury riddled season with some major pieces of the re-build (selling and replacing Pogba, for starters) incomplete, that's an excellent season.Reply

Finally we look like we may be able to break down teams- that said it ws nip and tuck for the first 20-30 minutes worth of exchanges and this Man U fan wants to believe that quality won out in the end.Time will tell
Neither Martial nor Greenwood did that much in the game except score, and both very very well taken - I cannot decide if that is a complientor an insult

JJ's "dour start" lasted about 40 minutes, with Lindelöf, Matic and Maguire all conniving in turn (in the 2nd and 3rd minutes respectively) to very nearly gift Watford a goal. All three were erratic throughout in fact, with Lindelöf's failed attempt at a headed clearance leading the Watford goal later which was overturned by VAR (correctly as it turns out). This wasn't a good game from United, even if the result was excellent. An example in point was Greenwood who was rather weak today throughout, but who then redeemed himself with a wonder goal with hisleft foot.
In short we were lucky and we had Fernandes and Shaw who were super solid and Martial (a bit erratic, too, but great in his good spells) who all three carried us to a 2-0 result, from which point we largely coasted. Fred was okay, too, and should have stayed on with McTominay, who should have started. Once again, Solskjaer's substitutions were bizarre. Three guys at once in the 80th minute? What if De Gea were to be injured in the nextminute? Or Shaw?
And why sub Chong on? He contributes nothing - something he was consistent with today as well - and he'll be leaving in the summer. Why not sub Bailly on and get some added steel in defence? Shaw can't do it all by himself. I'm happy to see the three points and the extra three goals added to our stats, but this game was nowhere near the self-assured rout that the scoreline suggests. Oh, and Doucoure is an excellent player. By far the best player for Watford, and a guy I'd love to see us bid for in the summer.Reply

Nonsense. If we beat Liverpool 20-0 at Anfield, things would be different. But we don't. And I'm pointing out something that you clearly missed today - perhaps you didn't watch the game - which is that this was a much, much narrower result than would be obvious from the score. But you do you. Frankly, and I'll say this just once, it's because of fans like you that our club isn't in the top three or two. The club gets the fans it deserves.Reply

Sad thing is, United could have had Fernandes in the summer. He was obviously the type of player that our midfield has desperately needed. But Woodward's ridiculous "one transfer at a time" policy, coupled with the protracted nature of United's negotiating tactics, meant we missed out. While it would not have turned United into title contenders, there are too many other squad issues to sort out, I don't think that we'd currently be staring up at the top four. Looking at Ole's signings so far, the future is looking brighter than it has done in a long time. Maybe it's time for some so called fans to get off his back and start to back him. Turning United around was never going to be quick or painless.Reply

Its been ages since Utd had a talent who was able to change the course of an average performance. Someone who could establish dominance with one moment ,like a free kick or a dribble or a pass or a corner . When I first came to know of Bruno Fernandes ,I thought he was just another raw talent . His leadership qualities were spoken about in the media ,but I didn't see it ( probably because I don't follow the Portuguese league, and the fact that there was a pessimism about a pkayer's potential stagnating at United ) The point is ,it could very easily have been PR fluff,to drive up his value . But its starting to become evident how he improves people around him mentally,by just being himself. Fingers crossed and yes it's a small sample size , but I hope he keeps going. We finally have a talisman of some sort.Apart from Rashford ,of course, who can't influence teammates much simply because he is homegrownReply
