Alexandre Lacazette (left) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (right) celebrate Arsenal’s fourth. Photograph: Andy Rain/EPA As the last few seconds of this game played out, as Arsenal knocked the ball around without inhibition and Newcastle chased them without conviction, a strange and discomfiting sensation seemed to descend on the Emirates Stadium. You might call it, for want of a better word, satisfaction. Not happiness, as such: Arsenaldon’t really do
happiness. But the soft and sleepy contentment of a game well won, an afternoon without qualms or catastrophic injuries or late drama or existential angst: this was the unfamiliar part. TOTTENHAM GO FIFTH AS SON HEUNG-MIN PUNISHES LATE ASTON VILLA ERRORRead more
You could legitimately point out that things have gotten pretty rough for Arsenal fans when the yardstick of a successful afternoon is one not spent screaming. But as ever in these faltering early days of the Mikel Arteta era, you have to take your little triumphs where you canfind them.
This was certainly one: a victory secured with class and brass, gilded by two late strikes from Mesut Özil and Alexandre Lacazette that elevated this from functional win to rout. A victory with caveats too, to be sure: how Bernd Leno managed to emerge with a clean sheet is a question that will flummox the statisticians of the future. Indeed, for all their dominance Arsenal occasionally did their level best to make Newcastle look like a functional attacking side. Had Steve Bruce’s team been a little more clinical, particularly in the first 20 minutes when terms were still being negotiated, it might have been a different game entirely. By the time they threatened again, around an hour in, Arsenal were already 2-0 up through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pépé, and largely safe. Pépé was a treat to watch. It was his precise cross that set up Aubameyang’s opening goal, and his own strike three minutes later was fitting reward for a pleasingly decisive performance: sharp, unpredictable, productive. There are plenty of Arsenal fans who had already written him off after a disappointing half-season: in and out of the side, weighed down by his £72m price tag and the pressure of adapting to a new league and a dysfunctional team. But there’s a proper player in there, and Arteta seems to recogniseas much.
“We just need consistency from him,” Arteta said. “The way he applied himself defensively as well, he was doing things he didn’t do in the past. He made the difference today.” As for Newcastle, there will be a few eyebrows raised at their late collapse, one in which their hard-won reputation for shape and solidity seemed to evaporate before our eyes. After a strong first half, they looked paralysed by caution in the second: consumed not by what they could get but by what they could get away with. The new wing-backs Valentino Lazaro and Danny Rose began well but looked dangerously exposed as the game went on. Bruce has staked his job and Newcastle’s survival on their ability to make things tough for the opposition. This, a meek and tired capitulation after a break of 12 days, did not bode well. And yet it was Newcastle who began this game by far the stronger: parrying Arsenal’s thrusts with ease, passing through the press, making the most of their infrequent spells of possession. With Miguel Almirón barracking his way up the right wing and Allan Saint-Maximin weaving his sorcery on the left, the early chances fell to the visitors. Lazaro had a shot blocked in the fifth minute. Sean Longstaff’s volley following an immaculately worked set-piece was almost deflected past a scrambling Leno. Joelinton stabbed just widefrom six yards.

Lacazette brought the curtain down, smashing home Pépé’s cross after a lovely through ball from Joe Willock. Four-nil, and if there was any lingering surprise at full-time, it was not merely that Arsenal could still win at all, but that they could win like this. This was, if you can believe it, their first home win against a team ranked lower than them since October. And so it may only have been three points. But in the final reckoning, this may well be the game when Arsenal started to feel like a big club again.MATCH STATS

Talking points from today's match: 1. Arsenal need Auba to stick around if they want to win trophies. Wenger's last contribution to the team 2. If this is what Pepe can produce on a regular basis, then 72 million will seem like a bargain. 3. Saka is a prodigious talent, so composed even when playing out of position at 18. Tie him down to a new contract, Raul! 4. Ozil and Laca on the scoresheet, inject this feeling into my veins. Was dying to see th…Jump to comment

Only took 54 minutes to wake the hell up, then. I like to think that Arteta destroyed the changeroom while giving his assessment of the first half. But I'm very happy for Leno and the Chuckle Bros for the clean sheet, Laca for scoring, Saka for working his tail of and mostly just happy to be up in the ̶E̶u̶r̶o̶p̶e̶a̶n̶ ̶p̶l̶a̶c̶e̶s̶ top 10. All is (almost) right
with the world, at least for a day.Jump to comment

Left early tonight, first time I’ve done that in a long time, but it’s a trek back home and that second half was an absolute disgrace. No idea what Bruce said at half time but the team came out totally devoid of any shape or intensity. We would still have lost that 1-0 under Rafa but at least it wouldn’t have been a hammering. Funny thing is that this is how we’ve played in every game this season, even those we have won. The difference today is t…Jump to comment

This upholds my conviction that football attracts writers. The match was a joy to watch and this was a joy to read. We have the players and we had the manager too. Whilst I certainly still wish he’d been allowed to complete his legendary tenure on his own terms it was good to see that another far more qualified admirer, Mikel Arteta, is clearly capable of bringing back something of the magic his former boss conjured on countless occasions. The ‘soft sleepy contentment of a game well won’ was indeed something to relish, but the stadium was alive with excited conversation for a long time after the final whistle - not least regarding what Mikel actually says at half time. Whatever it is it instills that confidence we’ve been missing for solong.

Arteta should try Pepe as Number 9 with Aubameyang on the left. He played in that position for Lille and made a killingReply

A tentative first half and a more assured second half - still a long way to go before we can compete with the powerhouse football of Liverpool (don't care about the cheats at MC). Ozil looks a man reborn - almost back to his purring best with precision and pretty passing; I am willing to concede that Pepe is starting to impress (after writing him off as a dud); Mustafi is also looking impressive . . . but Bellerin gave up one too many balls in dangerous areas; Nekitah not quite ready for primetime (needs more seasoning). Not sure why he started instead of Lacazette, a proven goalscorer . . .Reply

I didn't understand how Nketiah started ahead of Martenelli, he's nowhere near the 1st team and should of been sent out on loan again.Reply

I think Arsenal fans need to temper their excitement about their annual home win against Newcastle by taking into account that we are most likely the worst “mid table” team in the history of the Football League, never mind the Premier League.Reply

I know that this is Arsenal v Newcastle comments, but as a City fan I am fucking exasperated at having opinionators like Conn and Barney et al having their say whilst we City fans are left to fucking rot. It's not fucking on btw. Even the 'City Fan' they had today - pure opinion and no commentary allowed. Friday we were kicked out. When can we have our say you fucking liberal, wet, London based , gutless fucks?Reply

What would you like to say? The evidence about the sponsor income in the emails seems pretty clear. A does the funding of Fordham by City as a vehicle to pay player salaries so they can report lower costs. And the lying about it all to both UEFA and CAS at the time. And the clearly dickhead attitude of Mansour and his cronies. If you join a club, which is what to tier European club football is, then you have to abide by the rules you sign up to. Don't blame UEFA for enforcing the rules City agreed too, blame your owner for thinking he could do whatever he liked with impunity.Reply

Nice to get a solid win in, although the final score did flatter a bit somewhat. More positive signs, and it seems like the time away has helped the squad to be a bit more focused and settled in their roles and how Arteta wants the team to play. Goals for Pepe and Laca will hopefully help their confidences, particularly the latter who we desperately need to start firing again if we are to stand any chance of pushing up the table. A clean sheet is always nice, but in attack Newcastle were woeful and rarely threatened. To a man everyone contributed, which is what you always want to see as a fan. Saka is brilliant, hard to think he's so young and filling in at full-back, but full credit to Arteta to using him really smartly by letting him get forward as much as possible to make use of his main attacking skill-set, while then using Xhaka to drop back and cover for him. He's neutered Bellerin in an attacking sense, and made Pepe do a lot of work on his own on the opposite flank, but Pepe as a dribbler is arguably the right guy for that role, and with Bellerin still working his way back to fitness/form, simplifying his game is also probably a smart move. It's this kind of clear thinking that makes me cautiously optimistic that Arteta may in fact be the real deal, compared to the cluttered, confused void of tactical thinking presented by Emery. A really important run of fixtures coming up for us, including games we really need to win if we want to finish as high up the table aspossible.

I have been one of those highly critical of Ozil. Today he was incredible... 31st minute in the first half he did something that looked so simple but was just genius. With Ceballos, they runned the show. "Artenal" is looking goodReply

Arteta says Guardiola is "suffering", as if he had no idea what dodgy accounting was going on. Yeah, right. And Will Unwin claims City have done nothing illegal, apparently overlooking false accounting and various other crimes relating to the filing of company accounts. And sorry to disappoint Mourinho, I don't think a 20 deduction is coming for the 2018 season, when the period under investigation is2012-16.
Finally, how the hell did we lose to this shower at Newcastle a fewweeks back?

I will hold fire on the substance of false accounting until a body competent to give a ruling has spoken. In the U.K. that would be the Financial Reporting Council whose findings are public. How do you profess to know what Guardiola May have known ? I would agree that Unwins claim that City have done nothing wrong seems a bit of a stretch.Reply
