MEDIA RAVES ABOUT KANSAS AFTER HUGE WIN AT BAYLOR ByKevin Flaherty 13hours ago

No. 3 Kansas avenged its loss to No. 1 Baylor earlier this season and staked its own case as the nation's best team with a 64-61 victory in Waco Saturday. The Jayhawks led for most of the game, but still put fans on the edge of their seats with some rough plays late, giving Baylor a final chance down three points, though Jared Butler's finalattempt missed.
The game also served as a redemption of sorts for Kansas center UDOKA AZUBUIKE . The Jayhawk big man had just six points on six shots in the first meeting as Baylor sagged to the interior and took away his post-up opportunities. He didn't get many in this game either, though Kansas put him on the move more often in the pick-and-roll game, to season-best results. Azubuike finished with 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting, 19 rebounds and three blocked shots, and his ability to get dunk after dunk on lobs and rolls to the basket helped the rest of the Jayhawks as well. Playing through Azubuike, Kansas built an 11-point second half lead. But Baylor wouldn't go away, and the Bears actually closed to within one point late. Kansas was able to get its best free throw shooter to the line, and ISAIAH MOSS , who finished with 11 big points, made both shots for a three-point advantage, setting up Butler's final attempt. See what media members had to say about Kansas' big win at Baylor. WHO'S GOING TO WIN IT? Kansas and Baylor lived up to the hype, with Kansas' win tying the two teams at 13-1 with four conference games remaining for each school. Can they continue to run the table through those final few games? Neither Kansas nor Baylor has lost, except to each other, since Jan. 1. That makes a pretty strong case that, as Medcalf pointed out, they're the two best teams in the country. NEITHER TEAM PLAYED ITS BEST IN LOSSES In truth neither team probably played its 'A' game either time out, except defensively. Baylor dominated on defense at Allen Fieldhouse, while the Bears struggled to score in the halfcourt against Kansas in Waco. And while the winners in each game were able to find enough offense to win, it would make for fascinating games should the twomeet up again.
SEE THIS GAME AGAIN
March 14 is the Big 12 title game, while April 6 is the national championship game. Obviously, the latter game would depend on where each team is sent and whether they're scheduled to meet up in the Final Four (if both teams get there). But both are projecting as No. 1 seeds, with Kansas solidifying its case with Saturday's win thanks to a brilliant showing from Udoka Azubuike. KANSAS DOESN'T FOUL UP 3, SURVIVES Kansas elected not to foul up three at the end of the game, with Jay Bilas opining that Kansas coach Bill Self likely made that decision accounting for how dominant Baylor was on the offensive glass and not wanting to risk a battle on the glass after a missed free throw. Whatever the reason, the Jayhawks played it straight up and Bears sharpshooter Jared Butler missed his final attempt from the top of thekey.
KANSAS GIVES BAYLOR A SHOT Kansas had the ball, up four points with a chance to salt things away. But instead Ochai Agbaji threw the ball away, Baylor missed a shot, Freddie Gillespie rebounded the ball and rolled it out as he was falling to MaCio Teague, with the Baylor guard hitting a 3-pointer to bring the scoreline to within one. Kansas was able to get the next inbounds across halfcourt and to Isaiah Moss, with the Jayhawks' best free throw shooter hitting both for a three-point lead. WHAT EVERYONE WAS HOPING FOR Kansas led by as many as 11 points in the second half, but Baylor is a great team for a reason, and the Bears battled back to within three points at the under-four timeout. That's when Kansas was able to make a couple big plays to stretch the lead out just slightly and give the Jayhawks some breathing room heading into the final few minutes. But things certainly didn't come easily for either team on Saturday. UDOKA AZUBUIKE A MONSTER The single most dominant player on the floor was Udoka Azubuike, who weighted the defense toward him on offense and was a terrific and tough rim protector on defense. Azubuike's ability to roll to the basket didn't just give himself a big point total, it opened things up for other players both on the drive and gave Kansas a few open outside shots. It was a true impact performance. BAD CLOSE TO THE HALF Kansas coach Bill Self pointed out at halftime that the Jayhawks didn't allow a huge run before half, as they did in the first game in Lawrence, but a drop from a seven-point lead to three was still disappointing and allowed the Bears to enter halftime with somemomentum.
HIGH-LEVEL BASKETBALL From early on, media members were impressed with the caliber of play by both teams. Kansas and Baylor combine to bring athleticism, length and defense, and both teams are well-coached with plenty of star power. The two teams could theoretically meet twice more this season, in the Big 12 Tournament again in the NCAA Tournament, and both teams are good enough to make those matchups happen. A BUNCH OF ADJUSTMENTS Kansas debuted a new middle ball screen offense that gave the guards the option to go both ways and was able to get Udoka Azubuike on the move where the Bears couldn't really help off of other players. Azubuike dominated the first half and had a double-double shortly after halftime. After Scott Drew's brilliant strategy in the first game took Kansas out of its comfort zone, Self's adjustment allowed Kansas to find comfort offensively early on against one of the nation's best defenses.
