A maiden one-day international century for Heinrich Klaasen helped South Africa to a 74-run win over Australia in the opening match of the series at Paarl. Klaasen hit an unbeaten 123 from 114 balls as the home side recovered from a poor start to rack up 291 for seven from their 50 overs. That proved to be more than good enough, with Australia bowled out for 217inside 46 overs.

Kyle Verreynne and Janneman Malan both made their one-day debuts for South Africa, and experienced differing fortunes. Malan was adjudged lbw to Mitchell Starc on review off the first ball of the innings but Verreynne hit a valuable 48 to help the Proteas recover from a position of 48 for three. Verreynne and Klaasen put on 78 for the fourth wicket, and David Miller then added 149 with the centurion before falling for 64. Australia made a positive start and were on 133 when Marnus Labuschagne became the third man to fall. But the wicket of Steve Smith for 76 left the tourists on 174 for five and wickets fell frequently thereafter. Lungi Ngidi was the pick of the South Africa bowlers with three for 30 from his eight overs. The second match of a series of three takes place on Wednesday in Bloemfontein. AMERICA FACES AN EPIC CHOICE... ... this year, and the results will define the country for a generation. These are perilous times. Over the last three years, much of what the Guardian holds dear has been threatened – democracy, civility, truth. This US administration is establishing new norms of behaviour. Anger and cruelty disfigure public discourse and lying is commonplace. Truth is being chased away. But with your help we can continue to put it center stage. Rampant disinformation, partisan news sources and social media's tsunami of fake news is no basis on which to inform the American public in 2020. The need for a robust, independent press has never been greater, and with your support we can continue to provide fact-based reporting that offers public scrutiny and oversight. Our journalism is free and open for all, but it's made possible thanks to the support we receive from readers like you across America in all 50states.
On the occasion of its 100th birthday in 1921 the editor of the Guardian said, "Perhaps the chief virtue of a newspaper is its independence. It should have a soul of its own." That is more true than ever. Freed from the influence of an owner or shareholders, the Guardian's editorial independence is our unique driving force andguiding principle.
We hope you will consider supporting us today. We need your support to keep delivering quality journalism that’s open and independent. Every reader contribution, however big or small, is so valuable. SUPPORT THE GUARDIAN FROM AS LITTLE AS $1 – AND IT ONLY TAKES AMINUTE. THANK YOU.

Klaasen played a great innings on a difficult pitch with excellent support from a couple of his teammates. SA were in a lot of trouble early, but great performances win matches and 290 was huge on that pitch. After Klaasen's interview at the innings break talking about the pitch being two paced and slow I suspected Australia were going to struggle......and they did. The Steve / Marnus show, nearly always fun to watch was simply devoid of intent. They were content going at 4's and 5's while the RRR increased thinking they'd catch up later. They couldn't accelerate when required and neither could the remaining batsmen. Klassen and Miller could - basically game over once the Aussie openers went. Australia miss Maxwell immensely and they lack additional hitting power. This is the one format Australia can't find the personnel required, it's reflected in the rankings and was highlighted in the thumping England handed out in the WC semi. Congrats SA - too good.Reply

Aus have the personnel, they just can't get it on the pitch at the same time. Maxwell and Zampa/Agar is a very good spin/allrounder duo. The pacemen are just about the best in the world (in this format, in Tests, they are the best by far). And the top 4 are also world-beaters. Throw in Stoinis as a joker and they are very strong. But congratulations to SA for a very good outing. Klaasen has to play in all formats, may even take over the gloves if QDK wants that. Nortje and Ngidi are quality, Maharaj and Shamsi are a good spin duo. Vd Dussen and Rabada have to come back in, Phelukwaho/Pretorius have to improve, otherwise they look ok.Reply

_Aus have the personnel, they just can't get it on the pitch at thesame time._
Not so sure. Maxwell slots straight back in of course and the openers are set with an attacking LH/RH combo, but after that they're struggling. Smith and Labuschagne are two of the premier, if not the two premier Test batsmen on the planet, but on a slow pitch do they really work chasing a 300+ score? Especially together? They're playing 2010 ODI cricket and England have moved the game on. At least 5 of England's top six can clear the rope easily, repeatedly and do it consistently enough that you only need a couple of them to click. Australia have three and two are openers. Stoinis bombed in the latest WC, though injury concessions in play. Marsh can hit a ball, but has trouble rotating the strike and rarely makes big runs. Khawaja and the other Marsh have their moments but can also get bogged down and struggle against quality spin. Then there's the Big Bash hitters - Lynn, Short, Weatherald etc (There's plenty) but they seem to struggle over 50 overs and don't do it consistently enough. Am a big Carey fan, but he's tailing off now and I'm leaning to Phillippe or Seb Gotch (would start with the younger man). Would love to try something newlike:
Finch
Warner
Stoinis (bowling option)Smith/Labuschagne
Turner (bowling option) Maxwell; (bowling option)Phillippe (wk)
Agar/Hazlewood (pitch depending)Starc
Cummins
Zampa

Great game.
The background and scenery was unreal, like the Tour de France, but static and involving cricket with no cyclists. Steve smith hit 76 and it seems disappointing!Reply

Where's Maxwell? Where's Stoinis? These selectors are back into their groove again or are they playing for the odds? Marsh is a disaster waiting to happen. BUT what has happened to the batting skills of Cummins? Once he looked to have the skills of a half decentall-rounder. Now???

Maxwell's injured, and D'Archy Short got the nod over Stoiness because, um, we'll need to get back to you on that one. Don't wish to knock Short after only 5 ODI's, but he hasn't set the world on fire, and at the age of 29 and three quarters it might be that Langer's selection genius might be letting everyone down on this one. You would have thought that Stoiness' performance as player of the series in the Big Bash would have got him a ticket to at least to T20I wing of the test, but then not everyone is Justin Langer.Reply

Was a good game, Klaasen played really well, Miller & Verreynne also chipped in with useful contributions. The ball wasn't exactly coming on to the bat, and new batsmen were finding it difficult to score. Mitch & Short didn't contribute much this game, perhaps Aus might think about bringing in the two Ashtons, Turners 6 Agar.Reply

The bottom 7 of the batting contributed less than 60 runs in total, and left all but 5 overs uncompleted. I'm really struggling to think of a similar rout in recent times. Ngidi and Shamsi bowled well, but overall it was a very disappointing performance from Australia's tail.Reply

On paper that's probably correct, but I don't think anyone is would really rank this SA team as being anything like on par with the England 2019 WC champions.Reply
