Australia’s Ashton Agar celebrates taking the wicket of South Africa’s Dale Steyn to complete his hat-trick. Photograph: Mike Hutchings/Action Images via Reuters Ashton Agar took a hat-trick as Australia thumped South Africa by 107 runs in the first Twenty20 on Friday, showing absolutely no signs of hesitancy in their first game back in the country following the embarrassing ball-tampering scandal of 2018. Agar nearly had a double hat-trick when he took two in two balls later on. The left-arm spinner finished with brilliant figures of 5-24 as South Africa crumbled to 89 all out – their lowest T20 total in reply to Australia’s 196-6. Much was made of Australia’s return two years on from the cheating episode in a Test in Cape Town that saw Steve Smith and David Warner banned for a year, and Smith lose the captaincy, in one of cricket’sbiggest scandals
.
Smith and Warner both playedat the Wanderers and Australia were unaffected by the buildup before a supremely efficient victory. Cameron Bancroft, the other player involved in the tampering plot, isnot on this tour.
Warner was out for four on the second ball of the game in Johannesburg in a dramatic start. After that, Australia silenced the normally boisterous and occasionally hostile crowd at the Wanderers. Smith made 45 from 32 balls to top score for Australia, but the Aussies were especially rampant with the ball. STEVE SMITH ADMITS TO AUSTRALIA BALL-TAMPERING PLAN AGAINST SOUTHAFRICA
Read more
Mitchell Starc removed the South Africa captain Quinton de Kock on the third ball of the game with one that swung hugely and knocked back hismiddle stump.
South Africa were already struggling at 44-4 when Agar took his hat-trick in his first over into the attack. He had Faf du Plessis (24) caught on the cover boundary off his fourth ball. Andile Phehlukwayo was out lbw next ball and failed with a DRS review. Dale Steyn edged to the Australia captain Aaron Finch at slip to complete the treble. Finch sprinted away after the one-handed catch and celebrated with a leaping high-five with Agar. Agar’s hat trick was the 13th in T20 internationals and he is the second Australian male to do it. The former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee took the first hat-trick in T20s in 2007. AMERICA FACES AN EPIC CHOICE... ... this year, and the results will define the country for a generation. Anybody else score any runs for Australia - or is it just another Steve Smith only benefit column? Monitored all the news services - everyone mentions Smith on 45 : nobody mentions Finch on 43. What a difference 2 runs makes!!!!!!Reply

AUS have an excellent T20 side. You'd want Maxwell and Stonis in that middle order (Wade shouldn't be there) and Kane Richardson may not necessarily be your third quick. But they're certainly one of the favourites when the tourney rolls around.Reply

A real stinker from the Proteas, but the reality is that this is the best SA has to offer. It's not like there are better players sittingout.
Our bowlers are just shit. Every one talks Rabada up but he bowled really badly. Shamsi is a terrible replacement for Tahir. Steyn is 36 years old and coming to the end. Aussies will be a little baffled as to how they never made 225. SA gave up 12 wides that cost them 31(39)? runs total. Just useless. van Biljon and Smuts (sounds like an undertaker firm), are way out of their collective depths. Faf is done. van der Dussen is absolutely no opener. Miller just looks so vulnerable against a spinner. We have a tail that starts at the 6th batsman. I expect regular bashings from the Aussies on this tour. Could the Proteas lose every game in every format ?Reply

> SA gave up 12 wides that cost them 31(39)? runs total. Just useless. No, the wides cost them 12. You can't add the runs scored off of the extra ball to the 'cost' of the wide, it doesn't make sense.Reply

SA had a shocker. Just write that one off as 'not their night', tidy up the bowling lines and they'll be competetive. Starc looking even better than normal a worry for them. On quicker pitches the Aussie bowling attack looks pretty solid. Anyone know why Maxwell isn't inattendance?

The question needs to be answered, how is it Matthew Wade batted at Number 4 in this T20 and made 18 runs. What is it that Wade has that gets him continually selected by Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns. I the last T20 series in Australia, Wade , even though as Captain of Tasmania opened the batting, both Stoinis and Short had a higher run average but were not selected by Hohns for this match. Likewise in the last Test series here in Australia Wade was selected as batting at Number 5 ahead of Kwajaha.. If Stonis,Short, or Kwajjaha are not better hitters I give up. But the only justification I can see is that Wade is our best sledger and that the selectors justified his selection " as being good in thedressing room".
I wonder whether Bradman would have used that s criteria whenselecting a team.

Big Bash form may have contributed, as did Shield form for his recent Test selections. He was actually held back due to his sledging past yet kept racking up great numbers. Conspiracies are fun though.Reply

I've wondered what happened to Ashton since his astounding debut in international cricket in 2013. He 'retired' into domestic cricket for a few years - he was a bit young back then - and I'm so pleased to see him do so well this season. rather him, than another aussie ball cheater. We'll see a lot from him. Go Ashton!Reply

One, two or a few mistakes. Like 'playedat' in para 4 when there has been liberal use of hyphens elsewhere. De Kock is a lower case 'de'. Then there is the confusion between a double hat-trick and a 5-fer. T20 is so fast the concept of an innings has been omitted from this article. Content is contracted in from AP. My guess is, there are limitations to editing whatever is supplied. "iof", please explain?Reply

Much is made of Smith & Warner comebacks... but what was Ashton Agar's sin for seven years in the wilderness? In case you had forgotten the teenager's defiant 98 on debut: > There was no question Agar saved the day for Australia at Trent > Bridge in Nottingham. Agar made the highest score by a No 11 batsman > in a record last-wicket stand of 163 with Phillip Hughes (81 not > out) as Australia recovered from 117-9 to 280 all out for a > first-innings lead of 65.Reply

One-sided game and impressive over from Agar. But what's this stuff about Warner, Smith et al showing great character and resilience by being unaffected by the crowd in South Africa? There has never been much doubt that Warner and Smith are naturally talented batsmen. But we learned all we needed to know about their character when they were caught blatantly cheating on their last visit to South Africa. They are back now after a slap on the wrist but let's not pretend that they are some sort of role model.Reply

They were not banned for a year for ball tampering. It was their behaviour, the way they went about it and how they responded afterwards. They were sanctioned by Cricket Australia for breaching article 2.3.5 of Cricket Australia's Code of Conduct by engaging in conduct that was contrary to the spirit of the game, unbecoming of a representative, harmful to the interests of the game, and/or which brings the gameinto disrepute.

It almost feels like it was too soon after the England tour ended that they're plunged into this series. It was pure chance I caught the second half of the match. Well, final third. I know Australia had a point to prove but unless I'd read it in this article, I'd have forgotten all about that. I couldn't quite believe that hat-trick ball was caught, it was fantastic. But even better was the first wicket, middle stump flyingout of the ground!

It just looked like a case of a team that forgot the things that it did right and that kept them competitive against England. Shamsi bowled well if we can overlook the 5 wides he contributed to SA's 14 extras run welcome package to Australia. Not to minimise that this Australian team is a step up the England's T20I one that played against SA, but I'm still a bit stunned by how much ground SA managed to concede as soon as England flew home.Reply
