PAUL REED SMITH CE24 Paul Reed Smith CE24. By Phillip Dodge @tonereport. February 19, 2016. 1 Comments. YouTube. Today, we’re exploring a recently reintroduced classic from PRS Guitars. The CE24 was first released in 1988 as the first “affordable” PRS. The price in 1988 was $1,099—not exactly a cheap price 28 years ago. The new CE24 retails for $1,999. DIMARZIO PAF MASTER HUMBUCKERS The year was 1955 and 45-year-old Gibson guitar tech Seth Lover set out to solve a problem. The RV-6 offers eight different reverb effects each reviewed below. This latest version from Boss offers an updated algorithm that makes the classic modes—Spring, Plate, Hall, Room and Modulate sound fresh and modern. The only mode from the previous RV-5, the Gate mode, is now gone, but in its place are three new modes; Dynamic, +Delay and ELECTRO-HARMONIX DELUXE BIG MUFF It has the classic controls of the NYC BMP: Volume, Tone and Sustain. New to the DBM on the left side is a Bass Boost-Normal toggle switch. In the Normal mode, you get the classic Big Muff tone. Flip on the Bass Boost, and you get a deeper, warmer, fatter low end. It becomes more noticeable with the tone control past noon. CMAT MODS BUTAH OVERDRIVE The Butah low gain overdrive is one example in their lineup that is plain on the outside but sounds damn good, going from smooth to gritty with ease, and doesn’t cost a lot. Simple but effective. The Butah is very simple to use, with just tone, gain, and level controls. Nothing fancy here, but it is true bypass and made with top qualityparts.
ELECTRO HARMONIX EAST RIVER OVERDRIVE Yes, the East River Drive is yet another tube screamer. Based around the venerable JRC4558 chip, the East River Drive is set apart from the rest of the pack in that Analog Man (Mike Pierra) assisted with the design work. In his own words, “EHX nailed the TS808 circuit and did a good job with the part selection.”. DUNLOP BAND OF GYPSYS FUZZ FACE MINI The new Fuzz Face mini not only replicates Jimi Hendrix’s fuzzy tones from his Band of Gypsys project, but it’s also compact and has a mirror-like chrome finish. For Hendrix tonehounds, this little fuzz is going to be a must-have pedal. However, anyone else in search of a biting, classic distortion will also want to listen to this littleguy.
MAXON OD808X
The first thing I noticed about the OD808X in comparison to the smoky sounds of its green godfather is the extended frequency response and clarity in the higher frequencies. This allows for chiming harmonics to cut through and offers more dynamic range from the guitar’s tone controls. 808 loyalists will be glad to know that all the creamy LOOKING GLASS OVERDRIVE BY DOD The Looking Glass offers two overdrive modes, “Low” and “High.”. Low mode produces a tamer, quieter form of distortion with just a touch of compression. I found the Low mode to be perfect for adding a bit of edge to an otherwise too-clean tone. It’s the sort of sound which we’ve PIGTRONIX PHILOSOPHER’S TONE MICRO Pigtronix Philosopher’s Tone Micro. When Pigtronix debuted the original Philosopher’s Tone, it was a departure from standard issue guitar compressors with its Grit, Treble and Blend controls. FENDER ‘68 CUSTOM DELUXE REVERB AMPLIFIER Part of Fender’s Vintage Modified series, the ’68 Custom Deluxe Reverb takes its inspiration from the original but immediately detours into cool new territory: the reverb and vibrato work on both channels and the “custom” channel gets a killer modified Bassman tonestack that really opens up what you can do with the amp vis-à-vis using DIMARZIO PAF MASTER HUMBUCKERS The year was 1955 and 45-year-old Gibson guitar tech Seth Lover set out to solve a problem. ROCKETT ARCHER IKON Compared to Rockett's original silver Archer, the Ikon exhibited a dollop more of the silky, musical compression that makes this circuit special. It also seemed a tad warmer, and perhaps slightly rounder in the low end. The difference (as with many things Klon-ish) is ELECTRO-HARMONIX DELUXE BIG MUFF It has the classic controls of the NYC BMP: Volume, Tone and Sustain. New to the DBM on the left side is a Bass Boost-Normal toggle switch. In the Normal mode, you get the classic Big Muff tone. Flip on the Bass Boost, and you get a deeper, warmer, fatter low end. It becomes more noticeable with the tone control past noon.
D’ADDARIO NYXL STRINGS The new NYXL strings take the go-to nickel wound string concept and shake it up considerably, with impressive results: more output at the same gauge compared to other nickel-wound strings (tested, and true), more stretch when needed for even extreme bends (tested, true), better retention of their original tension over time (tested, true), and JHS MORNING GLORY V4 Since 2009, JHS Pedals came up with just such a pedal, the Morning Glory. It is the company’s best-selling pedal, and the one that put JHS on the pedal building map. It is a low- to medium-gain overdrive that has a simple premise—it makes one’s amp sound like the same amp, but with the benefit of adding very natural sounding overdrive.KEELEY DARK SIDE
The Dark Side recreates a very specific classic guitar tone by combining all the necessary effects for that tone in a compact, easy-to-navigate, and ruggedly-built package. It has two halves, starting with an analog op-amp fuzz circuit based on a Big Muff of the '77 vintage. Controls include knobs for Level and Gain, a three-waytoggle for a

Brazil’s Deep Trip returns to the market via the road less taken, bringing us its take on the Tone Bender MKI, but delivering much more. Literally right out of the box, the Kryptone nailed those wonderful Mick Ronson tones from Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. When Pigtronix debuted the original Philosopher’s Tone, it was a departure from standard issue guitar compressors with its Grit, Treble and Blend controls. The impressive functionality lets guitarists get all kinds of clean and dirty compressed tones, making it an excellent choice for all stylesof playing.
When Electro-Harmonix rolled out its Soul Food last year, it was billed as the company’s take on the perennial hype of the famed Klon overdrive pedal, where original versions now sell for staggering sums on the used market. The first thing I noticed about the OD808X in comparison to the smoky sounds of its green godfather is the extended frequency response and clarity in the higher frequencies. This allows for chiming harmonics to cut through and offers more dynamic range from the guitar’s tone controls. 808 loyalists will be glad to know that all the creamy ELECTRO-HARMONIX BASS PREACHER Electro-Harmonix is a company with a rich history of compressors, with the Soul Preacher being an early foray into the stomp-box sized arena.
