IT ONLY HAPPENS EVERY PRESTON GUILD It actually refers to a special event that occurs once every generation in the north west city of Preston, 2012 being the latest in nearly a thousand years of staging. QUIRKY PLACES TO SEE AROUND SANTE FE, NEW MEXICO Madrid, New Mexico: Take a mostly abandoned mining town, add a bunch of hippies, artists and independent thinkers, thrown in some funky buildings rumored to have been sold for a pittance and you get Madrid.The former ghost town (pronounced MADrid) on the historic Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway south of Santa Fe, started life in the late 1800s as a coal mining town. FIVE TANTALISING TEA ROOMS IN THE LAKE DISTRICT Turn off the main road from Keswick to Honister, over the double-arched packhorse bridge, round the corner and there you have a perfect little grey slate cottage. Go through low doorway and find a cosy little table in this small, yet perfectly formed tea shop. There are always plenty of snacks, light meals (my favourite is the simply scrumptious cheese and ham toastie) and drinks to choose from.
