ACTING IDENTITY
Acting is, at its simplest, the attempt to most accurately and authentically portray the experience of someone who is not you. An actor who grew up a Girl Scout may play a character who grew up a soccer player. An actor who is shy may play a character who is boisterous. An actor who is gay may play a character who is straight. MEN ON BOATS, WOMEN IN PRODUCTION This production of Men On Boats was a singular experience. It was different in a way that, in my opinion, it shouldn’t be. Women can call the shots from any part of a show, be it on stage or off. To be in a room full of women is what theater could be, and I for one cannot wait to work on my next majority female production. THIS PERFORMANCE CONTAINS: TRIGGER WARNINGS IN THEATRE That is why trigger warnings exist. Uncomfortable topics continue to be the focus of theatrical endeavors, and well they should be - they are often topics that need discussion and exploration. All it takes is a board specifying what a performance contains in a few short phrases to keep everyone safe and engaged. WHY HUGH JACKMAN IS IMPORTANT A big part of the reason for The Greatest Showman’s whopping success is, without a doubt, Hugh Jackman. Not only did he turn in a warm, enjoyable performance filled with an earnest enthusiasm that bounced off the screen, but he also was the one who made this movie happen in the first place! Jackman has mentioned multiple times that he had to BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A CASUAL QUEEN Brian May, Roger Taylor and Tim Staffell played gigs for the love of the music. Farrokh Bulsara, later known by the name Freddie Mercury, was a fellow college student acquainted with the band. After Staffell left, Mercury joined May and Taylor and suggested the band name Queen. The fourth and youngest member was 19-year-old John Deacon. ELIZA AND HENRY: A FINALE In today's world of bringing domestic abuse to light and encouraging healthy relationships, a tale where the leading lady decides to pursue a life better than a life of serving a disrespectful tyrant resonates with audiences more than a story where an abusive character decides to change for the better at the last possible moment. This week, we’re ignoring what Miller may have intended in his play; this week, we’re talking about Abigail Williams and sexism. I'M HERE: MY EXPERIENCE SEEING THE COLOR PURPLE FOR THE I didn’t expect to be nearly as affected by this show as I was. Papermill Playhouse in Millburn New Jersey is celebrating its 80th anniversary and the first show of the season was the touring production of The Color Purple revival. LES MISÉRABLES: FINDING VALIDATION IN A NON-ROMANTIC LOVE As the central character, Jean Valjean establishes that the most important love story in the whale-sized tale that is Les Misérables isn’t a romance at all. Yes, other characters experience romantic themes; Marius, Cosette, and Éponine are caught in a love triangle, and Fantine expresses sadness over Cosette’s biological fatherhaving left.

IN A WORLD OF GODS AMONG MEN --- A LOOK AT HADESTOWN If you read my last article before the break, I said Hadestown was my most anticipated Broadway musical this year.
