Łutsel K'e, or "Place of the cisco fish," is the only settlement on Great Slave Lake's storied (and beautiful) East Arm – site of the new Thaidene Nene National Park. Marked by soaring red cliffs and seemingly unlimited Lake Trout, this scenic community of about 300 Chipewyan Dene is accessible only by air, boat or snowmobile. Remove your hiking boots and stroll barefoot over the smooth, crusty saltflats and through the briny NITAINLAII TERRITORIAL PARK This park is perched on a cliff overlooking the Peel River and surrounded by stands of white birch and white spruce trees. It's an ideal place to unwind for a few nights on the long journey up or down the Dempster. The visitor centre offers a fascinating glimpse of the life of the Gwich’in Dene people, past and present. There are 23 non-powered campsites here, plus washrooms, drinking water OUR LADY OF LOURDES SCHOONER Donated on behalf of Pope Pius XI in the 1930s, the schooner Our Lady of Lourdes sailed the Beaufort Sea for decades, delivering supplies to far-flung Catholic missions and carrying Inuvialuit children to Cathloic residential schools. The Great Bear Gift Shop is attached to the museum and carries traditional arts and crafts made by Aboriginal people from the Sahtu region and the greater NWT. The oldest community in the Northwest Territories, Fort Resolution is located at the confluence of the Slave River and Great Slave Lake. This tiny Chipewyan and Métis community of 524 goes back to 1791 when the North West Company opened a trading post here. Trapping remains a key local industry in Fort Resolution, along with commercial fishing and timber-harvesting. KAKISA | SPECTACULAR NORTHWEST TERRITORIES What quaint Kakisa lacks in size, it makes up for in being welcoming, rooted, rustic and peaceful. As the Northwest Territories' tiniest town, the community comprises fewer than four-dozen people living on an idyllic lakefront wilderness, and their hearts are as big as alloutdoors.

Nahanni Butte is named for the mountain that watches over the hamlet. Its traditional name is Tthennáágó meaning "Strong rock". If you are planning a summer visit, you'll want to call ahead for a river taxi. Contact the Nahanni Butte Band Office. The band office is not actually the one running the taxi service, but are best at putting you in contact with the correct person.
