PAINT - HOME
Paint serves to protect and/or decorate buildings. Prior to the early 20th century, it was generally hand-mixed by painters and of four broad types: Soft distemper (typically whiting bound with glue size, possibly tinted), widely used on internal plasterwork. Whitening, a variation (without size, untinted), was frequently employed forceilings.

Not necessarily. A few holes will not cause significant decay to building fabric. Often, masonry bees are opportunist, utilising pre-existing crevices etc, such as old nail holes, irregular cavities in stone, beetle borings in timber, as well as spaces under roof tiles, behind ventilation grilles and even inside locks.LEAD PAINT - SPAB
Lead paint was popular until the 1960s, particularly on timber and metalwork. It was also applied to lime plaster in grander buildings (this had to have carbonated to avoid an unsightly reaction, ‘saponification’) and, sometimes, stuccoed facades. BUILDING OF THE MONTH: PLAS NANNAU, LLANFACHRAETH The SPAB have been alerted to concerns regarding the declining condition of Plas Nannau, a Grade II* listed hall, following years of neglect and the recent theft of the lead roof making the building vulnerable to water ingress.
Lead paint has unrivalled durability on timber, possesses good flexibility and is ‘breathable’. Its texture, depth of colour and mellow appearance are difficult to emulate with alternatives. The impact of HS2 on heritage: Lower Thorpe Farm, Oxfordshire In October we received our first application relating to a listed building to be demolished for HS2. This was a Grade II listed farm near Banbury. Unfortunately, under the High Speed Rail Act 2017, which modified the controls related to listed buildings, we have little or no scope for objection. We deeply regret the demolitions necessitated by the construction of HS2.Read More __
