At the age of six, he lost his father and younger sister to typhus fever and was raised by his mother, step-father and grandmother. HENRY B. PLANT MUSEUM The U.S. declaration of war against Spain in April 1898 led Sister Bettina to offer a short training course in battlefield nursing to graduates of other nurse training schools.
