REPORT IDENTIFIES BILLIONS IN FEDERAL PROGRAM DUPLICATION This week, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released its annual duplication report. This is the ninth edition of GAO’s annual look at program duplication, overlap and fragmentation in the federal government. The annual examination was requested by our founder, former Senator Coburn, who had the provision included in the 2010 debtlimit increase.
THE NEW TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION When America won our independence, the Framers of our government were wary of any system resembling the tyranny of a king. That meant placing the power to tax in the hands of the people’s chamber – the House of Representatives – where every revenue bill mustoriginate from.
A RATIONAL TAKE ON MEDICARE FOR ALL Medicare has been on the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) high risk list since the report’s initial release in 1990 because of its “size, complexity, and susceptibility to mismanagement and improper payments.” Last year, Medicare and Medicaid paid out a combined $89 billion in improper payments. That’s about the size of the Department of Education ($60 billion) and the WITH PUBLIC LANDS BILL, CONGRESS TAKES ONE STEP FORWARD The First Step Back. The bad news is, the bill expands and puts on autopilot the very program that made it worse. The federal government owns between 635-640 million acres of land, which equates to about 28 percent of all the United States. WHAT IS THE TAX GAP AND WHAT CAN BE DONE TO REDUCE IT? Option 1: Simplify the Tax Code. According to the National Taxpayers Union, the total compliance costs of the whole federal tax code was $303.8 billion in tax year 2017.This estimate includes both $31.9 billion in out-of-pocket spending on tax compliance (paying for software, accountants, office supplies etc.) as well as the opportunity cost of the time spent complying thatHOME - PURSUIT

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO “THE INHERITORS”? More than 50 years ago, on January 6, 1967, Time magazine awarded their “Man of the Year” not to an individual but to a generation. The cover celebrated “The Inheritors” – Americans under 25. According to Time, “The Inheritors” were “cushioned by unprecedented affluence and the welfare state” and had “a sense of economic security unmatched in history.” IMMIGRATION FIASCO SHOWS CAREERISM IS THE ENEMY OF The immigration fiasco illustrates that in Washington the enemy of compromise isn’t principle but careerism – governing to win the next election above all else. Careerism is a more powerful force in Washington than ideology. * Skip to primary navigation* Skip to content
