YOSHINOYAMA, THE CHERRY-BLOSSOM MOUNTAIN Mount Yoshino is the most famous sakura site in Japan. With more than 30,000 cherry trees covering the whole mountain, the very idea seems fantastic. But is this really the best site? To get off to a good start, here’s my favourite scene of the day. BEST ABANDONED PLACES IN JAPAN (2015–2016) My previous list of the best of Japan’s abandoned places dates back two years now, as I tend to write about accessible places. As you may know, haikyo (wasteland, abandoned places or even urban exploration) is a sensitive subject. I can’t share information about the sites, both out of respect for the local community but also and especially because it would put these places at risk. LITTLE ABANDONED JAPANESE CLINICS Totoro Times regulars know I am a great fun of abandoned hospitals, they are my favorite type of haikyo. Not those empty concrete buildings in Europe, but the small wooden clinics rotting away quietly in the countryside without anyone noticing. GOSHIKINUMA : FIVE COLOURED LAKES Goshikinuma is a hidden corner at the foot of the mountain in Fukushima prefecture, with five differently colored volcanic lakes. In the background, the infamous Mount Bandai, all around, a beautiful chameleon-cute forest that changes its coat according to the season. ABANDONED JAPANESE SCHOOLS In front of the schools, you can almost always find a statue of Ninomiya Sontoku, a philosopher and economist from the Edo Period. He is not a student, obviously, but he was known to study constantly. He was studying and working every day in order to feed his baby brotherand mother.
URBEX IN JAPAN: HAIKYO The 80’s in Japan. Japan boosts its economy vehemently: the loans are made easier, there is a lot of money available, liquidity, and the Japanese have wages 30 to 40% higher than European salaries. MOTONOSUMI INARI SHRINE Motonosumi Inari Shrine is located in western Japan, far from the rest of the world. The nearest city, 80 kilometres away, is Yamaguchi. Never heard of it? It’s also the capital of the prefecture of the same name 🙂 No, it’s not very touristy. NAKAGIN CAPSULE TOWER When I first moved to Tokyo, my company was renting me a tiny apartment in Ginza. That was not for the fancy side of it, rather because it was really close to work 😉 So everyday, I was walking from Ginza and Shiodome and on the way, here it was: the NakaginCapsule Tower.
QUEEN CHATEAU SOAPLAND, IBARAKI Back to Queen Chateau Soapland! I really wanted to return to Ibaraki just to visit this old dilapidated brothel-like hotel haunted mansion. This is G-Cans, also known by the unlikely name of Metropolitan Area Outer Underground DischargeChannel.
ABANDONED AMUSEMENT PARKS IN JAPAN The park was built by a local guy named Ominami-san. When it opened in 1975, the Western Village was a simple american-looking farm. But Ominami-san made his park grow every year, to the detriment of profitable. In 1995, he even added a copy of the famous Mount Rushmore to the Western Village, seemingly on an impulse. DOAI STATION: THE DEEPEST IN JAPAN It is only the starting point of a few hikes. The entrance of the station warns you : it is the deepest in Japan and you will have to go down (or up, multiplied by 2) the 486 stairs that bring you to the platform. But let’s be honest : we are already very used to that FUCHU ABANDONED US AIR FORCE BASE Fuchu Abandoned military base is surely the craziest haikyo to infiltrate: Dangerous, because it is a military area tightly surrounded rusted barriers; and Difficult because even after you got inside, you are still under the direct surveillance of both the guards and the Fuchu citizens (some residence even set up tripods to support the security).). Inevitably, there must be a fun side inNICHITSU GHOST TOWN
The Abandoned Village. The abandoned tin-mining village, about 50 km from Chichibu in Saitama, can also be reached from Kofu in Yamanashi. Nichitsu is the name of the mining company that owns the village. The workers had to live on site because of the distance from the main cities. So the village grew in size until in its heyday it had as many MAYA HOTEL: THE MOST FAMOUS ABANDONED HOTEL Maya Hotel (Mayakan) is a celebrity of all Haikyo in Japan. So many people have been there, done all sorts things, took all sorts of photos you can imagine. So this time, besides boasting about our pictures, we will try to dig more into Maya Hotel’s history, and try LITTLE ABANDONED JAPANESE CLINICS The heavy atmosphere of this abandoned hospital surrounds us from the very first step . A mixture of the heat, the buzz of mosquitoes and the smell of rotten stuff. This place – unlike the others – is not romantic, is not a challenge, and much less a mystery. Yet, it YOSHINOYAMA, THE CHERRY-BLOSSOM MOUNTAIN Yoshinoyama. Mount Yoshino is divided into four levels, each with a slightly different atmosphere and the blossom at different stages. So the site can be enjoyed over a long spring season, as there’ll always be pink petals around! But of course that also means the mountain will never be completely covered with sakura from top tobottom.
ABANDONED JAPANESE SCHOOLS I have always liked abandoned Japanese schools. Not only they are sleeping beautifully far away in forgotten countrysides but they are also the cradle of the Japanese soul. Those wooden schools were built before World War 2 and some of them are even from the Meiji Period. Today, most of them had to close since the number of young people wentOFFBEAT JAPAN
The Snow Monsters of Mount Zao. It’s not an easy encounter. He was studying and working every day in order to feed his baby brotherand mother.
NAGORO : THE VILLAGE OF DOLLS Nagoro Village. Night falls fast on this little village in the hollow of the Tokushima mountains. The dolls begin to cast gigantic frightening shadows. The crows, more at ease at that time of day, land here and there against a purple sky with the aggressive kaa! YOSHINOYAMA, THE CHERRY-BLOSSOM MOUNTAIN Yoshinoyama. URBEX IN JAPAN: HAIKYO Urbex in Japan: Haikyo. The 80’s in Japan. Japan boosts its economy vehemently: the loans are made easier, there is a lot of money available, liquidity, and the Japanese have wages 30 to 40% higher than European salaries. They buy and speculate by every means. GUNKANJIMA: PHOTOS & STORIES Gunkanjima was an undersea coal mine located on an island, bought by Mitsubishi in 1890 from a feudal lord. Mine shafts were dug, a village was constructed and some land was reclaimed. The island grew in size. The first apartment building (Block 30) was completed in 1916 – reinforced concrete had arrived in Japan. I can’t share information about the sites, both out of respect for the local community but also and especially because it would put these places at risk.OFFBEAT JAPAN
