Although he had been sick for over a month, he was preparing to begin chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, so his sudden passing was a great shock. Richard got a BS from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1974 and a PhDfrom the
HOME PAGE - NSO - NATIONAL SOLAR OBSERVATORY The NSF's National Solar Observatory's mission is to advance knowledge of the Sun, both as an astronomical object and as the dominant external influence on Earth.. NSO operates the Inouye Solar Telescope, the largest and most advanced solar telescope in the world. ABOUT - NSO - NATIONAL SOLAR OBSERVATORY The National Solar Observatory is a public research institute headquartered in Boulder, Colorado with a satellite facility in Maui, Hawaiʻi. The mission of NSO is to advance our understanding of the Sun, both as a star and as a major influence for life on Earth. Helioseismology is the study of the Sun using acoustic (sound) waves. The surface of the Sun, known as the photosphere, is the point at which light can no longer penetrate, so we cannot see inside the Sun. However, the Sun is full of sound waves, bouncing off the underside of the the surface in regular patterns. Scientists have developed delicate and complex techniques to measure these soundNSO IN HAWAII
DKIST is located at the Haleakala High Altitude Observatories site (HO) atop Maui’s Haleakalā. The HO site, owned and managed by the University of Hawaiʻi, currently houses 6 academic and 4 space surveillance telescopes. HO is not part of Haleakala National Park. It is located on State of Hawai’i Conservation land. MOUNT WILSON OBSERVATORY HK PROJECT The Mount Wilson Observatory HK Project, which aimed at studying stellar chromospheric activity and variability, was started by Olin Wilson in early 1966 and continued by Art Vaughan, George Preston, Douglas Duncan, Sallie Baliunas, and many others through 2002, when the final observations were made (e.g., Wilson 1978, ApJ 226, pp. 379-396; Vaughan, Preston, and Wilson 1978, PASP 90, pp. 267 POTENTIAL-FIELD SOURCE-SURFACE MODELS Potential-Field Source-Surface Models. The Potential-field Source-surface (PFSS) model provides a simple and effective model for the large-scale features of the global coronal magnetic field.
