In 1329 Robert the Bruce died, aged 54, having been king of Scotland since 1306. His heart was interred (after a pledged pilgrimage to the Holy Land) at Melrose Abbey, while the rest of his body was laid to rest at Dunfermline Abbey; in 1921 the Northern Ireland parliament assembled for the first time, in City Hall, Belfast; in 1939 King George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, arrived at Niagara Falls, marking the first visit to the US by a reigning British monarch; in 1954 Alan Turing, mathematician and Second World War codebreaker, died from cyanide poisoning, aged 41. At Bletchley Park he and his team cracked the Enigma code, crucial to protecting Allied convoys from German U-boat attacks; in 2010 seven people were convicted for causing “death by negligence” over the 1984 leak of toxic gas from Union Carbide’s Bhopal pesticide plant in Madhya Pradesh, India. The industrial accident killed about 3,000 people in the days after theleak.
NATURE NOTES
From June to September, lady’s bedstraw can paint the flank of a hill in just as bright a yellow as oilseed rape. This perennial wildflower bears dense panicles of small, sunshine-coloured flowers, and when dried it smells like new-mown hay, so was often used to stuff mattresses. Also known as fanwort, maid’s hair, petty mugget and rennet weed, we know from historical records that it was once commonly used to separate milk into curds and whey to make cheese. Sadly, it is no longer known how this was done because all modern attempts to reconstruct the process have failed.Melissa Harrison
