Last week’s trivia asked about the latest closing date for Stowe Mountain Resort. According to the MMSC timeline, that would be May 2, 1983. In 1974 Burns started his own company in Park City, Utah and built a lightweight ski that was soft tip-to-tail, but stiff side-to-side. They would handle soft snow and bumps very well. Burns’ true genius was in the name he chose, “The Ski”, and the graphic design he used. HEXCEL SKIS AND GRAVES SKIS The lunar lander for our trips to the moon utilized Hexcel materials. In 1971 Hexcel began making skis with an aluminum honeycomb core. Hexcel skis were less than half the weight of comparable other skis. Bob Burley says that they were “light and quick edge to edge. Very high energy ski for its time period. BECONTA – RETROSKI 2020-2021 It certainly was the one with the most Vermont ties over the years! Beconta was founded by Walter Blascoe in New York City right after World War II. Blascoe was a German Jew who managed to escape to the United States before the war. During the war he was a technical adviser to the 10 th Mountain Division. Once the war was over Blascoewas able

Tuckerman Ravine. The winter of 1968-69 set a record for snowfall on Mount Washington that still stands today. Some 566 inches fell that season and much of that snow was deposited in Tuckerman Ravine by the wind.
