Cruising Multihull Sails. Cruising multihulls are one of the fastest growing segments in the industry. Quantum offers sails specifically designed to get the most out of these boats known for their speed, comfort and seaworthiness. Learn more. REEFS: HOW MANY AND WHERE The number and location of reefs in the mainsail deserves thought. The typical cruising mainsail configuration uses two reefs that are normally placed at intervals of approximately 12% of the luff length. They do not reduce area as a standard percentage. In fact, a first reef will reduce more area because the sail is wider at the bottom. HOW LONG DO SAILS LAST? Thos sails will last for 16 years! At the other extreme, a person living aboard their boat and cruising the Caribbean extensively will use their sails as many as 12 hours per day, 12 days per month, 12 months a year for an average of 1,728 hours a year. This sailor will need to replace sails every 2.5 years. Do the math for your type ofsailing
A QUICK GUIDE TO REEFING Get the tack of the reef fixed and then winch up the halyard to put good tension on the luff –this keeps the sail pulled forward. Once the luff is taught, you can take up the slack on the reef line on the clew, again making sure to put good tension on the foot of the sail. If you have a loose-footed sail, as most cruisers do, roll the reefed A SAILMAKER'S GUIDE TO PATCHING A cover layer of insignia or spectra/Kevlar PSA should be placed over the repair on both sides of the sail. The patches need to be different sized, with one larger than the other to prevent any hinge points, which is a laminate sail’s worst nightmare. The repaired area needs to be left flat to cure before it is ready for use on the water. DO I REALLY NEED A BOOM VANG? Do I really need one? Absolutely! The boom vang can be a misunderstood sail control. It takes over the job of pulling down on the boom once the mainsheet is eased. Upwind, the mainsheet pulls down as soon as the boom is over the traveler. Controlling the boom height determines twist, or the shape of the mainsail leech.ATHENS, GREECE
