Witness to History. He was born on the shores of Pearl Harbor and would play on the train tracks near his family’s farm near Ford Island. On December 7, 1941, when he was 11 years old, James Hoy Sau Lee, known to family and friends as Jimmy, saw planes fly over his home. Winter 2020 edition. DIAMOND HEAD STATE MONUMENT One of Hawaii’s most recognizable landmarks, Diamond Head State Monument is a breathtaking sight witnessed from land, sea, or air. Founded on 475 acres across a 300,000 year-old volcanic crater, the summit at Diamond Head crater is a short, steep hike out of Honolulu and into the clouds. PEARL HARBOR NATIONAL MEMORIAL Admission to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, which includes two museums and the park grounds, is free and open to the public, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, seven days a week (closed only on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day). Parking at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is free, with lots located at the main entrance. AMERICAN MEMORIAL PARK The American Memorial Park Visitor Center is open Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Visitor Center is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. The bookstore and gift shop are in the lobby of the Visitor Center. Information on educational activities led by Pacific Historic Parks is available atthe
KALAUPAPA NATIONAL HISTORICAL... The museum store will be open Monday through Saturday 10:00 am to 2:00 pm once the park reopens. Out of respect for the patients who still reside in the park, the number of visitors allowed to tour Kalaupapa is limited to 100 people per day, and visitors must be at last 16 years of age. Visits can be booked with Damien Tours (808-567-6171).All

Six months after the bombing, thirty-five of the fifty-five patients including all the children, were transferred to Kalaupapa. Morale was high and with the war bonds they had ample fruit, vegetables, poultry and pork.
