January 7, 2009. Jack Poole Plaza, Vancouver, BC, Canada. V6C 3C1. The raison d’etre of the piece was to commemorate the workers in and around Burrard Inlet and Coal Harbour. The site’s owners, Pavco specifically wanted artists to consider the past, present and future of the site. Directions (Google Maps) 1990S: THE GOOD DECADE 1990s: The Good Decade. The 1990s were a darned good decade, and everybody’s now coming to realize this, but people also need to know that when the 1990s began, it felt like anything but a decade with a unique tone and texture and attitude. It felt like nothing. It feltblank.
SWORN TO FUN, LOYAL TO NONE January 1, 2010. 182.9cm x 182.9cm x 5.4cm. Aesthetically similar to the painted color charts of Gerhard Richter (German, born 1932) and Ellsworth Kelly (American, born 1923), Coupland’s canvases magnify boldly hued pixels into seeming abstractions that are instantly recognizable as the QR codes ever-present in contemporary Westernsociety.
