Humans have an estimated 25,000 protein-encoding genes in their genome. , there is a small subset that seems to be particularly important in the prevention, development, and progression of cancer. These genes have been found to be either malfunctioning or non-functioning in many different kinds of cancer.CANCER SURVIVORSHIP
Life after cancer can be anything but ordinary. Survivorship is a broad term that includes not only people who have been diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life, but also the friends and family members of people who have been diagnosed with cancer. Following the treatment period, during which cancer patients have an abundance of support and helpful information, survivors may feel atLUNG CANCER
Small Cell Lung Cancer. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) accounts for about 15% of all lung cancers.4 Also known as oat cell carcinoma or small cell undifferentiated carcinoma, SCLC tends to be aggressive. The cancer often grows rapidly and spreads to other parts of the body including lymph nodes, bone, brain, adrenal glands, and the liver.5 Risk of developing SCLC is highly associated with CANCER IN WILD ANIMALS Cancer seems to affect all animals, from anteaters to zebras. Much less is known about the cancers that affect wild animals, in part because it is hard to study. Animals move around and may not be easily observed for long periods of time. The cancers that have been studied are very interesting and will certainly prove useful in the study ofhuman cancer.
COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT) Computed axial tomography (CT scans or CAT scans) use X rays to create images of body tissues. X rays are a form of high energy radiation and are themselves, able to cause cancer. The doses of X rays used in CT scans are as low as possible, but they do present some risk of doingharm.
CARCINOEMBRYONIC ANTIGEN (CEA) The carcinoembryonic antigen is a protein that is produced by embryos during development. The protein helps cells stick to each other1.. For this reason it is called a 'cell adhesion molecule or CAM'. It is not normally found in the blood in adults Some cancers, including colon, rectal, ovarian, breast and pancreatic may produce CEA. SENTINEL LYMPH NODE BIOPSY (SLN) What is Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy? After a lesion is diagnosed as cancerous, it is important to know if the cancer has spread to other areas of the body (metastasized). One of the methods used to determine metastasis is sentinel lymph node biopsy, the removal of some lymph nodes. The rationale for sentinel lymph node biopsy is based on the idea that the spread of cancer is not a random event. Following the treatment period, during which cancer patients have an abundance of support and helpful information, survivors may feel at CANCER DRUG RESISTANCE One of the main causes of failure in the treatment of cancer is the development of drug resistance by the cancer cells. This is a very serious problem that may lead to recurrence of disease or even death. This section is intended to introduce some of the main ways in which cancer cells can resist treatments. It is possible that more than one of these resistance mechanisms can occur in any PET SCANS | CANCERQUEST What is it? The test is performed on PET SCANS | CANCERQUEST What is it? A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan is an imaging technique that uses radioactive molecules to create a dynamic image of internal tissues and organs. PET scans are very useful in detecting diseases like cancer because tumors will be a different color than surrounding tissue activity. CANCER DRUG RESISTANCE One of the main causes of failure in the treatment of cancer is the development of drug resistance by the cancer cells. This is a very serious problem that may lead to recurrence of disease or even death. This section is intended to introduce some of the main ways in which cancer cells can resist treatments. It is possible that more than one of these resistance mechanisms can occur in any COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT (CBC) That works out to approximately 250 billion cells! A normal RBC count for an adult male is between 4.6x10 12 and 6.2x10 12 per liter of blood. That's 6,200,000,000,000 or 6.2 trillion red blood cells per liter of blood and as stated earlier, normal adults have around 5.5 liters of bloodthat's a LOT of cells! SENTINEL LYMPH NODE BIOPSY (SLN) The rationale for sentinel lymph node biopsy is based on the idea that the spread of cancer is not a random event. Migration of cancer cells to distant parts of the body often occurs via blood vessels (veins/arteries) and the lymphatic system. A large network of vessels that carry fluid and cells of the immune system around the body. HOMEPAGE | CANCERQUESTFOR PATIENTSCANCER BIOLOGYMEDIA CENTERABOUTUSNEWSROOMGIVE

The games reinforce the knowledge presented in the text and videos and most provide feedback to help guide users. We continue to add more games so check back to play the newest ones.DIGITAL RECTAL EXAM
Digital Rectal Exam. Digital rectal exams (DRE) can be useful for the detection of abnormalities, including cancer, in the rectum. During the exam, the physician inserts a gloved, lubricated finger in the rectum and feels for abnormalities. In men, digital rectal exams are also used to detect changes in prostate that could indicate anabnormal
SKIN CANCER CURRICULUM Skin cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in the United States. The single best way to reduce the incidence of skin cancer is education. Education about skin cancer can lead to more healthy choices with respect to sun exposure and other risk factors related toskin cancer.
FLUORESCENCE IN SITU HYBRIDIZATION (FISH) Fluorescence in Situ Hybridization. FISH is a technique that measures gene amplification using fluorescently labeled DNA (probe). The sample of breast tumor tissue is prepared for FISH by heating it. This heating process breaks the DNA into two strands; this produces two single strands of DNA and is called denaturing. DOES HPV CAUSE PROSTATE CANCER? James Lawson and Wendy Glenn at the University of New South Wales reviewed existing studies linking HPV to prostate cancer. This is important because HPV is the only virus identified in prostate cancer that can be prevented by vaccination. The researchers found that HPV was more common in prostate cancers than normal prostate tissues. HOMEPAGE | CANCERQUESTFOR PATIENTSCANCER BIOLOGYMEDIA CENTERABOUTUSNEWSROOMGIVE

VIDEOS | CANCERQUEST In addition to the text-based content of CancerQuest, we have developed many videos and animations to teach cancer biology, detection and diagnosis. The videos are distributed throughout the site but we have collected some of them here as a central resource for patients who want to learn about specific detection, diagnosis or treatment techniques. EMOTIONAL AND PSYCHOSOCIAL EFFECTS OF CANCER The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted everyone. Watch this special interview with Dr. Wendy Baer of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University to learn about coping strategies during this very stressful time. Many additional mental health and well-being topics are discussed below. Resources and links can be found at the bottom of thepage.

Cancer IS a genetic disorder. Cancer develops only after a number of important regulatory genes are damaged. Cancer is NOT hereditary (inherited from their parents). One does not get cancer directly from their parents. Children can inherit defective genes that put them at higher risk of developing cancer. In some cases, the children have avery
CANCER SURVIVORSHIP
Life after cancer can be anything but ordinary. Survivorship is a broad term that includes not only people who have been diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life, but also the friends and family members of people who have been diagnosed with cancer. Following the treatment period, during which cancer patients have an abundance of support and helpful information, survivors may feel at MOLECULAR DETECTION AND ANALYSIS OF CANCER This test was develped by Genomic Health and is designed to look at the activity of 12 genes. Seven of the genes are known to be involved in colon cancer growth and/or spread. The other five allow the lab to make sure the test is working properly.
