BIRR CASTLE GARDENS
Eliana Ferioli ‘Great Gardens of Europe’. The gardens are home to an abundance of rare plants, collected by the Earls of Rosse on their travels around the world over the last 150 years. SCIENCE CENTRE AT BIRR CASTLE The science centre reveals the wonders of early photography, engineering and astronomy with a special emphasis on the brilliant design and assembly of the world famous Great Telescope.. Discover astronomical instruments, cameras, photographs and photographic equipment used by the Third and Fourth Earls and Mary, Countess of Rosse, in the middle and late 1800s. TREES & PLANTS IN THE GARDENS OF BIRR CASTLE The Carroll oak was certainly planted before the Parsons family came here in 1620 . The present Earl, Brendan Parsons, 7th Earl of Rosse, has been involved in plant hunting himself and collecting for the past 30 years. His father before him, the 6 th Earl was also a great planter and collector, and many of the rarest trees such as the rare ASTRONOMY AT BIRR CASTLE Astronomy. The Astronomy of Birr Castle is one of its greatest attractions and, in many ways, one of its surprises. It is unusual for a Castle in the centre of Ireland to have become a great centre of astronomical discovery. However, in 1845, the 3 rd Earl of Rosse built the biggest telescope in the world and it remained so for 75 years. The Award-Winning Gardens of Birr Castle Demesne in Ireland are both rich in amazing feats of science and engineering, as well as rare trees and flowers, wonderful wildlife, walks along peaceful rivers and the lake. WELCOME TO BIRR CASTLE Birr Castle dates back to medieval times. In Anglo Norman Times, the Castle was built on the motte. The gate tower of this led into the castle bawn (courtyard) which is now the centre of the present building. The Central Gate Passage with its 12 foot walls can be seen in the lower floor of the present building. VISITOR INFORMATION AT BIRR CASTLE Visitor Information. In line with Government guidelines, we will reopen all outdoor spaces to the public on 26 April, from 09:00-18:00 daily. Tickets are available to book now, pre-booking is essential due to limited capacity. What is open: (updated 17 May) 120 Acres of Parklands. 10km of walks. THE PARSONS FAMILY AT BIRR CASTLE The 17 th century was a turbulent one for the Parsons family in Birr. The castle was involved in two sieges, the first in the 1640s where the family moved for a time to London, before returning at the end of the Cromwellian period. In 1690 the castle was besieged again, by Sarsfield. This time the Castle held out and Sarsfield moved on. WILDLIFE AT BIRR CASTLE GARDENS Birr Castle Demesne is a very special place for biodiversity, it is its own little world of protected habitats, ecosystems, flora and fauna. TREES & PLANTS IN THE GARDENS OF BIRR CASTLE Michael’s son the 7 th Earl and his wife Alison have visited many countries on plant collecting expeditions, especially northern Pakistan from where, among others, we have an excellent young specimens of Abies pindrow. Also seeds have been brought from Mongolia and of course China, especially Yunnan. Several plants and trees grown here are named after family members such as the tree peony EVENTS AT BIRR CASTLE The Quest. For those interested in nature, discovery and adventure, Birr Castle Demesne Centre is the place for you. The team have created the “Family Quest” which will take the young and maybe not so young explorers on a journey through time, from great engineering feats to wildlife discoveries, and many more highlights in between. AUDIO TOUR OF BIRR CASTLE Castle Tour: This tour includes a 45 minute Guided Tour of the main reception rooms of Birr Castle. You will also have full access to the Science Centre, the Great Telescope and the gardens after your tour. Tours are running throughout the months of May, June, July and August. They run from Monday to Saturday at 10.00, 11.30 and 13.00.ONLINE TICKETS

On the occasion of Lord Rosse’s 80th birthday, Birr Castle and Crann Trees for Ireland are delighted to announce ambitious plans to create, through public participation, the largest grove of giant redwoods outside of California, within the historic grounds of Birr Castle Demesne. Giants Grove will be a legacy project for Lord Rosse and the Birr Castle Estate, having allocated the land to the MICROSCOPY - MARY WARD Microscopy at Birr refers to the work done by Mary Ward, the cousin of the 3 rd Earl. Mary Ward was born Mary King. Her mother was the sister of the 3 rd Earl’s mother and both these sisters came from Gloster House near Birr.
