THE POINT OF 'THE PILLOWMAN'? The first, ‘The Applemen’ is fairly obviously about sacrifice for the greater good. The last, ‘The Little Jesus’, seems resurrectionist albeit with human intervention. In the intervening four, of which ‘The Pillowman’ is one, perhaps the key to the ‘purpose’ behind this drama can be found. T his long and interesting concert was structured around Schoenberg’s extraordinary setting of 21 poems by the Belgian poet Albert Giraud, Pierrot Lunaire.Composed in 1912, the work created such a sensation that Stravinsky went all the way from Paris to Berlin to hear it. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM The two most complete performances to my mind were those of Warwick Fyfe as Bottom, and Sally-Anne Russell as Hermia.Fyfe’s Bottom realised the complexities of the character of Bottom, especially as Pyramus in the mini-opera and as the man who dreams he is an ass having Titania for a lover, in such a commanding way that he seemed to be the main character in the whole opera.THE DISTRACTION
