A major installation of new artworks by Brett Graham, (Ngāti Koroki Kahukura, Tainui) at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery / Len Lye Centre, tells a cautionary tale of human endeavour. Graham spent six weeks in Taranaki as the 2019 Govett-Brewster Artist in Residence. NGAMATA SKIPPER: WAIATA POI Ngamata Skipper: Waiata Poi. Poi are often considered in the context of entertainment or cultural performance, but for Ngā Iwi o Taranaki they take on a greater significance in terms of history and status. An ancient art, Poi in Taranaki regained popularity at Parihaka, imbued with an oral narrative of identity and justice, and of resistance. RAEWYN MARTYN WITH JESS CHARLTON: PAINT OVER, USE AGAIN Raewyn Martyn creates site-specific and site-responsive paintings that change over time, and challenge the conventional stability and temporality of painting as an artistic practice.
