INSECT ART: ANIMAL SCULPTURES BY SKINK CHEN Skink is a very talented individual. You might not know it, but I have already shared some of his work – a tutorial for making a wide angle macro relay lens (at the bottom of this post).Based in Taiwan, he designs monsters and creatures and meticulously constructs them into3D models.

Epomis beetles. For nearly a decade I studied Epomis beetles and their interactions with amphibians (read my blog post about them here ). These ground beetles feed exclusively on amphibians during their larval stage. The adult beetles are generalist predators that prey on many animals, but occasionally go after amphibians as well. ORDER COLEOPTERA: BEETLES A photo gallery of beetles (order Coleoptera) CRUZIOHYLA – A DREAM COME TRUE It looked like a massive tree frog, with eye-catching coloration: dark green (dorsal) and bright orange (ventral). The sides of its body are finely striped in black against an orange background. Its eyes, featuring a vertical pupil – an indication this animal has a nocturnal lifestyle, are orange with a THE INCREDIBLE TADPOLE SHRIMPS The second, smaller species, Triops cancriformis, is much more scarce, and in fact is known only from a handful of ponds. This species is critically endangered in Israel due to habitat destruction, however it was recently recorded from a new location, a water reservoir in the Arava desert, the southernmost point in its distribution to date. LITTLE TRANSFORMERS: MYRMARACHNE FORMICARIA After this short introduction, it is time to present our first local Little Transformer, the ant-mimicking jumping spider Myrmarachne formicaria. It is one of the nicest looking spiders here in Ontario, and it is surprisingly abundant in its habitat. Alas, there is a small catch here. While this jumping spider is local, it is not native toCanada.
INSECT ART: THE USE OF INSECTS IN JAPANESE ANIME The mushi culture is truly overwhelming; this post is merely scratching the surface. Without exception, the insect that is most commonly used in Japanese art, and specifically in anime and manga, is the singing cicada. Cicada molting into its adult stage. Beautiful use of insect biology from Makoto Shinkai’s “The Garden of Words”. THREADWING ANTLIONS: GIRAFFE MONSTERS TURNING INTO DUCK Threadwing antlions are interesting animals. They belong to family Nemopteridae, and they are unmistakable in appearance – adults have extremely long hindwings, like thin threads or ribbons, giving the insect its name and the appearance of a delicate fairy when it is inmid-flight.

Armed nasute termite soldier (Rhynchotermes perarmatus) This monstrous beast is a soldier of Rhynchotermes perarmatus, a nasutiform termite. However, contrary to the “rule” I mentioned above, soldiers of this species possess both a chemically armed snout and well developed mandibles. They are now treated by taxonomists as being mandibulate SCHIZOMIDS, THE UNSTOPPABLE ARACHNIDS Schizomid or shorttailed whip scorpion (Belicenochrus peckorum) from the Footprint Cave, Belize. Members of order Schizomida are tiny soft-bodied arachnids that inhabit the top layer of soil in caves and under rocks. Some of them also live inside decomposing wood, and several species are myrmecophile, living in ant nests. LYSSOMANES – THE SPIDER FROM THE UPSIDE DOWN Similarly to other predatory dwellers of the leafy upside down, Lyssomanes spiders deploy an ingenious hunting technique. The spider’s huge eyes are a good indication of its hunting method – it uses its excellent vision to locate prey. Lyssomanes jumping spiders are diurnal sit-and-wait predators of dipterans and other soft-bodied arthropods. . They prefer to sit on leaves that areexposed
BURSTING THE TRIOPLAN BUBBLE Meyer-Optik Görlitz is a lens brand made in Germany. Founded in 1896, it is most known for its Trioplan lens construction, based on Cooke Triplet. The Trioplan quickly became one of the most popular Meyer lenses because of its special visual properties, and a great deal of its increase in popularity is thanks to online image-sharing platforms that allowed photographers around the globe to INSECT ART: TRANSFORMERS AND OTHER INSECT MECHA The insecticons Kickback, Shrapnel and Bombshell in their insect modes. LEPIDOPTERA
The common names “ 88 butterfly ” and “ 89 butterfly ” are typically used for species in this genus. They are often seen puddling – an interesting behavior in which butterflies take up minerals from mud, sweat and feces. Eighty-eight caterpillar (Diaethria sp.) is sometimes seen waving its horns while walking. LITTLE TRANSFORMERS: FORCIPOMYIA, THE MIDGE THAT TURNS Forcipomyia is a large genus in the midge family Ceratopogonidae, with a worldwide distribution and diverse habitat preferences. There are now over 1,000 described species of Forcipomyia. The adults of some species are known as important pollinators of cacao and other plants of economic importance in tropical and subtropical areas.HOME - GIL WIZEN

SLUGS - GIL WIZEN
There are about 30 species of native New Zealand slugs, most of which are endemic to New Zealand. All have a characteristic leaf-vein pattern on their dorsal side, most likely for camouflage. This leaf-vein pattern is absent in introduced species. In addition, native leaf-veined slugs have only one pair of tentacles – unlikeintroduced

LITTLE TRANSFORMERS: CERATOCANTHINAE BEETLES It is fascinating to observe these beetles transform to and from their alternative mode.
