EULOGIZING A HOME: HOW TO SAY GOODBYE TO A PLACE WITH In some homes, the soul of the space has been lovingly crafted over time. The memories we make there, bit by bit, laugh by laugh, with some heartache thrown in for good measure, make it seem inconceivable to ever abandon the house itself. 10 TIPS FOR A WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE HOME Most doorways are 23–27 inches wide, but according to the ADA, a doorframe needs to be at least 32 inches wide in order to accommodate a wheelchair. French doors are a great option. Ramps and Rails: You need to be aware of elevation changes. Many homes have at least a step or two, and often a whole flight of stairs. PAST & PRESENT: HISTORY OF CURTAINS With advancements in textile production, weaving and dyeing, the evolution of household textiles (primarily items designed for warmth, such as curtains, hangings, blankets and bed hangings) marched right along with developments in clothing. Early textiles were linen and flax, first spun in ancient Egypt, followed by wool and later cottonand silk.

Block-print bedspreads, leather-punched notepads and luminous brass objects peppered my design landscape. SEWING 101: HOW TO MAKE A HAMPER LINER Insert your needle at the diagonal pin and sew the seam using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Repeat for all for sides of the bottom, sewing each side separately and being sure to move the 1/2″ unsewn flaps out of the way for each corner. 5. Turn and Press. Turn the bag body right-side out and press the seams. BEFORE & AFTER BASICS: MAKING SILVER LEAF LESS STUFFY Let the adhesive set for 30 to 60 minutes to get nice and tacky. 3. After letting the adhesive set, start applying your silver leaf. Take a piece of wax paper and lay it over the top of the silver leaf sheet, “ironing” over the top of the wax paper with your hand. Block-print bedspreads, leather-punched notepads and luminous brass objects peppered my design landscape. After moving to London as a seven-year-old girl, I reveled in Western aesthetics — I would internally and ungratefully BEFORE & AFTER BASICS: STRIPPING FURNITURE Steps: 1. take some time to read the instructions on the back of the container, and make sure that you have the floor area covered where you will be workingit gets SUPER messy! 2. remove all hardware, and cover any areas that you do not want to get the stripping agent on. pour the stripping agent into a metal paint tray for easy access and DIY CERAMIC TAG PLANT MARKERS Steps: 1. Roll your clay to about 1/4 inch thick. 2. Cut a badge shape out and lay it flat to rest. 3. Using a bamboo skewer or the edge of a chopstick, poke a small hole at the top (for the wire, after it cools) 3. Place on a wax-paper lined sheet and bake, following the clay package instructions. STYLING A BOOKSHELF: 10 HOMES THAT GET IT RIGHT + 5 TIPS 3. Decorative objects – Think sculptural. A beautiful bowl, plate or even a stack of boxes. 4. Something natural – A lot of my favorite bookshelf incorporate organic materials. French doors are a great option. Ramps and Rails: You need to be aware of elevation changes. Many homes have at least a step or two, and often a whole flight of stairs. DIY PROJECT: PORTABLE SUN SHADE instructions: 1. measure 6″ on your dowel and draw a line all the way around to mark the height. 2. place the dowel end in the center of the bottom of your plastic bucket and trace around the dowel to mark where you will cut out the hole. 3. mix a single batch of quick-crete mix (enough for one bucket to be almost full) according to the DIY FLOATING WINDOW SHELVES In total, I got four 1/4″ thick acrylic shelves cut at Canal Plastic Center along with nine 5/8″ x 4″ square acrylic rods. Step 2. Using painter’s tape, plan the layout of your shelves. Allow for some room for your plants to grow. Step 3. Drill two holes in supportbrackets.

This Venice home uses the material in a fish planter as well as SEWING 101: MAKING A DUVET COVER Place two pieces of fabric WRONG SIDES TOGETHER. (This is the opposite of normal; usually you sew most seams right sides together.) Sew the seam with a ¼” seam allowance. This makes the silver leaf stick to the wax paper, which makes application SEWING 101: HOW TO MAKE A HAMPER LINER Insert your needle at the diagonal pin and sew the seam using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Repeat for all for sides of the bottom, sewing each side separately and being sure to move the 1/2″ unsewn flaps out of the way for each corner. 5. Turn and Press. Turn the bag body right-side out and press the seams.
