CIVIL WAR AT BELMONT The Battle of Nashville at Belmont Mansion. The Battle of Nashville, which occurred on December 15 and 16, 1864, effectively ended the Civil War in the Western theater. The Slave Census or Slave Schedules. The following census data shows the Slave Schedules, or list of slaves living at Belmont Mansion in the years 1850 and 1860. The only person listed by name in the Slave Schedule was usually the enslaver, in this case Joseph Acklen. Typically the age, gender, and color (black or mulatto) of each personis given.
RESTORING THE GRAND SALON The completion of the Grand Salon floor has many people asking us which project is next. Just look around, much of the space is still covered with mid-20th century finishes, not mid-19th. Our goal is a complete restoration of the room, which is one of the most architecturally important rooms in Tennessee remaining from the 19thcentury.

Offered on Monday and Thursdays beginning November 30th and running through December 17th these small group tours are all about Victorian Christmas traditions in the decorated mansion. Oliver Bliss Hayes was born in South Hadley, Massachusetts in 1783 to Mary Bliss and the Reverend Joel Hayes. As an adult he practiced law in Baltimore and moved to Nashville in 1808 where he continued his law practice. He also was successful in land speculation. In 1812 he married Sarah Clements Hightower of Williamson County. Adelicia and Joseph Acklen built Belmont Mansion in the Italian Villastyle in 1853
as a country estate and summer retreat from their Louisianaplantations.
There they raised their family in Adelicia's native Nashville until December 1864 when the 4th Corps of the Union Army occupied the house and grounds before the Battle of Nashville.
A majority of rooms in Belmont Mansion have been meticulously restored, complete with original and period furniture, artwork andstatuary.
