PERSONAL INDEPENDENCE PAYMENT (PIP) PIP is a new benefit stream. However, children up to the age of 16 can still receive DLA. On their 16 th birthday they transition over from DLA to PIP. Older people who were born before the 9 th of April 1948 will continue to be in receipt of DLA until they die at which point their DLA will cease. WHAT IS DEAF CULTURE? The Deaf community is a vibrant society where Deaf people who use sign language are traditionally drawn together through sharing news, experiences, activities and sports events. This creates a sense of belonging. Deaf people feel most comfortable in the company of other Deaf people. Hearing people who wish to learn more about signlanguage, the

The 'Transforming the Deaf Dementia Experience' Project, is a community interest initiative that supports Deaf people living with dementia and their carers. The project aims to promote a better understanding of dementia by developing accessible resources, information, and toolkits in British Sign Language (BSL). WHAT IS ACCESS TO WORK? A campaign plan is vital for a winning ‘BSL Act Now’ campaign. A strong and clear plan will serve as a roadmap to achieving our ultimate goal of a BSL Act. The 18th March 2003 was when the UK Government formally recognised British Sign Language as a language in its own right. It also promised to look into a legal status for BSL. Eighteen years on, we’re still waiting.
