For many Christians, Ash Wednesday marks the start of the Lentenseason.
Lent is the 40-day period – not counting Sundays – leading up to Easter. The season includes a focus on repentance, reflection and fasting, and concludes in the celebration of Jesus' resurrection. Ash Wednesday service (Photo: Jordan Kartholl/ Star Press) The ashes, which the priest or pastor spreads on a congregant's forehead, traditionally come from the burned branches used the previous Palm Sunday, saying: “From dust you came and to dust you will return.” The ashes symbolize death and repentance. _Several area churches sent announcements of Ash Wednesday services:_ Church of the Good Shepherd, 1007 Burnett St. A Said Mass with the Imposition of Ashes will be offered at noon, and a Sung Mass with Sung Litany, Incense, and the Imposition of Ashes at will take place at6:30 p.m.
Episcopal Church of Wichita Falls, 5023 Lindale Dr.: Holy Eucharist with the imposition of ashes will be at 6 p.m. New Hope Presbyterian Church, 2201 Speedway: 6 p.m. for Ash Wednesdayservices.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 421 Marconi St.: Ash Wednesday Masses in English, 7 a.m. and 12 p.m.; in Spanish, 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Our Lady Queen of Peace, 4040 York St.: Ash Wednesday Masses, 8 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 7 p.m. Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 4605 Cypress: Ash Wednesday WorshipService, 6:45 p.m.
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 12:10 p.m., 1501 9th St.: Ash Wednesday Mass, 12:10 p.m. and 7 p.m. St. Paul Lutheran, 1417 11th St.: Ash Wednesday Service, 4:45 p.m., Midweek School, 5 p.m., Catechism, 7 p.m., Ash Wednesday Service.CONNECTTWEET
