Dominic Thiem celebrates after winning against Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open. Photograph: Saeed Khan/AFPvia Getty Images
It is rare that a player wins a slam by beating both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, in either order, in the same fortnight. Stan Wawrinka did it here in 2014 and Roger Federer came within two points of doing it at Wimbledon last year in a final against the Serbian that left himshattered.
So, Dominic Thiem, who defeated Nadal in the quarter-finals two days ago and reached the final with an intelligent dismantling of his dangerous but frenzied German friend, Alexander Zverev, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), in the second semi-final on Friday, will join an elite group if he can overcome Djokovic on Sunday. It is the tallest oforders.

As Thiem said courtside on Friday,: “I’m always facing the kings of the grand slams in finals. I lost to Rafa twice at Roland Garros. Now I’m facing Novak. He’s the king of Australia.” He added: “It was an unreal match, two tie-breaks, so tough and so close. It is hard to break him . He had such a high percentage on his first serve . After playing four hours and 10 minutes against Rafa, I was in bed around 5am. It was not easy to recover, but the adrenaline came. Still, I had some troubles. We started with two breaks in our first semi-final here. “In the semi-finals of a slam, the level is so high and there are so many key moments, such as at the end of the second set. Then I was two set points down in the fourth, and saved . At the start of the fourth I was feeling nervous, putting so much effort, feeling my stomach, it was rebelling a little bit. “Sascha had a horrible ATP Cup and he worked so hard in preparation week for here. We’ve known he’s a great player for a very long time. Either of us could have won today. He’s still only 22. We won’t have to wait long until he’s in his first grand slamfinal.”
Thiem, at 26, is in his third against the defending champion reaching for his eighth Australian title and 17th major. History is weighing Thiem down elsewhere; he would be the first man born in the 1990s to win a major, and that would place him at the forefront of the new wave of challengers to the hegemony of the Big Three. Both players were edgy in the early exchanges and it became obvious that, if neither could build an extended stretch of dominance, the match would go long. Zverev hit some huge winners to take the first set in 40 minutes, but Thiem, more defensive, recovered to level in exactly the same time. THE RECAP: SIGN UP FOR THE BEST OF THE GUARDIAN'S SPORT COVERAGERead more
The lights over one baseline failed briefly at the start of the third set – appropriate, perhaps, as both were playing lights-out tennis – and there was a seven-minute delay. The interruption seemed to disrupt Thiem, who missed a chance to go two games clear, more than it did Zverev who got back on serve and then pressured the Austrian for the rest of the frame. Angered that a clean free-pointer was called out and not overruled – he had no challenges left – Zverev drilled a pair of statement aces and carried his rage into the next game, the longest to that point in the set. But Thiem stood firm, saving two break points, then forcing the tie-break after a love hold by Zverev. While the German had outserved Thiem, the Austrian was playing the big moments more calmly, and went a set up with a superbly angledbackhand.
Images
Now small distractions invaded Zverev’s concentration. The match was heading for three hours, at 15-all in the second game of the fourth set, when, having already questioned the reliability of the let machine, he complained to the chair umpire about a screen high in the arena that clicked with fresh statistics after each point. In as much as it was in his line of vision, it had been like that throughout thetournament.
He held, but Thiem’s mood had switched from concerned to convinced he could win. It was the look he had when beating Nadal in the quarter-finals. But looks don’t win matches; points do. Zverev was hitting with more venom, Thiem had relaxed certainty on his racket and, receiving in the ninth game, he worked his way to within two points of reaching the final. Zverev held for 5-5, and again, nervously, for the second tie-break. There he double-faulted and made a mess of a routine smash at 2-4. He served at 4-6 but could do nothing about Thiem’s delicate volley at the end of three hours and 42 minutes of very good tennis. AMERICA FACES AN EPIC CHOICE... ... in the coming year, and the results will define the country for a generation. These are perilous times. Over the last three years, much of what the Guardian holds dear has been threatened – democracy, civility, truth. This US administration is establishing new norms of behaviour. Anger and cruelty disfigure public discourse and lying is commonplace. Truth is being chased away. But with your help we can continue to put it center stage. Rampant disinformation, partisan news sources and social media's tsunami of fake news is no basis on which to inform the American public in 2020. The need for a robust, independent press has never been greater, and with your support we can continue to provide fact-based reporting that offers public scrutiny and oversight. Our journalism is free and open for all, but it's made possible thanks to the support we receive from readers like you across America in all 50states.
_"America is at a tipping point, finely balanced between truth and lies, hope and hate, civility and nastiness. Many vital aspects of American public life are in play – the Supreme Court, abortion rights, climate policy, wealth inequality, Big Tech and much more. The stakes could hardly be higher. As that choice nears, the Guardian, as it has done for 200 years, and with your continued support, will continue to argue for the values we hold dear – facts, science, diversity, equality and fairness."_ – US editor, John Mulholland On the occasion of its 100th birthday in 1921 the editor of the Guardian said, "Perhaps the chief virtue of a newspaper is its independence. It should have a soul of its own." That is more true than ever. Freed from the influence of an owner or shareholders, the Guardian's editorial independence is our unique driving force andguiding principle.

I didn't know this, but Thiem has won the last 4 of 5 matches he played against Novak, including 2 at the French? I'm still expecting Novak to win but Thiem has a very real shot at this. Hopefully, he has enough time to recover physically and mentally. The court is playing slow so there's plenty of time for Thiem to keep cracking those 163km/h forehands and get Novak out of position. If Thiem holds back for whatever reason; nerves, mental exhaust…Jump to comment

Thiem has the weapons to hurt Djokovic and has the confidence of at least beating him in a big match before. Of course, a best of 5 slam final is different and Djokovic owns this place and will be a bit fresher so is still a very strong favourite. But I have more hope of an upset than if it were Zverev or even Nadal in the final. I'm not anti-Djokovic, I'd just love to see someone else win a slam, so hope he can pull off a surprise.Jump to comment

Couldn't agree more. That first set was very erratic but both settled down well after that. One thing which puzzled me is the inability/unwillingness of Zverev to hit flatter on his forehead. He just seemed to not put any acceleration on the shot at all, and it was sitting up nicely for Thiem to take big swings at the ball. For Thiem, it's just a matter of when he wins a Slam and not if. (I suspect Sunday is a bridge too far from him)Zverev too h…

Impressive by both players. It’s nice to see Zverev has recovered from his ATP Cup disaster because that was uncomfortable to watch. He’s not just serving well now, his serve was mostly outstanding. A very, very good tournament for him. Thiem played well but dipped quite a bit from the level he reached against Nadal. He needs to raise himself back to that if he has any chance but it’s certainly not impossible. He has a curious facet tohim that…

What a brilliant match that was. I'm glad Dominic Thiem won, since I think he'll give Novak Djokovic a better run for his money. He handles the pressure better than Sasha Zverev; the latter still tends to start moaning and protesting when he hits a rough patch instead of concentrating on trying to get things right again. Mr Thiem reminds me a bit of Stan Wawrinka, especially when he lets rip that glorious one-handed backhand, but I think he's faster and lighter around the court, which should stand him in good stead when Mr Djokovic starts trying to turn him into a human windscreen wiper. I have to say that on the evidence of the two men's semi-finals, I understand why there's such a huge difference in the seat prices for the men's and women's finals. I know both Sofia Kenin and Garbine Muguruza are excellent players, but the match is likely to be a baseline slugfest with nary a volley in sight. However high-quality the stroke-making, it does become monotonous. There's far greater variety in the games of the top male players which for me, at least, it what makes them so much moreinteresting.

I think Thiem has a reasonable chance against Djokovic , he’s playing very well and physically stronger and fitter than before . I don’t get why he’s running round his backhand though ? Thiem’s backhand is awesome , if anything he should run around his forehandReply

Thiem has been impressive but Djokovic has been too. Unless Novak has a bad day Dominic will do well to take a set. That said, I think the win over Rafa will have set him up well for Roland Garros. If he can make it to the final there again I would fancy his chances this time.Reply

Thiem beat Djokovic twice at Roland Garros, Djokovic beat him once in Paris. So, in Grand Slam environment it is 2-1 to Thiem, although overall the bottom line states 6-4 in Djokovic' favour (he beat Thiem in other best of three set tournaments more often). All this points to the fact that Thiem will not be overwhelmed by the occasion. He has got a very good chance if he can recover well. It really is the time now for a new champion at a Grand Slam.Reply

Why is it time? So Federer can have the most slams after beating philipoussis a few times? Novak is the greatest ever, in tennis terms, and that should be reflected in the final slam count if there is any justice.Reply

You bet. He missed a regulation forehand once in Rome against Nadal (many moons ago) which not only cost him the title that day but also led to a long period of subjegation by Nadal .Reply

On a different note, it is depressing how the Aussie Open continue with their approach of holding the 2 men's semi finals on the Thursday and the Friday. The extra day's rest is a clear advantage to the Thursday winner, particularly if Friday's match goes longReply

I disagree. For me, Novak is at a disadvantage. The break doesn’thelp him at all.
I’ll never forget the french open in 2011. Novak was on that incredible winning streak, looking unbeatable. Then , I think it was Fognini, pulled out of his match , and Novak waited 6 days to play Roger. He almost got him too.Reply

"It is rare that a player wins a slam by beating both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, in either order ... Roger Federer came within two points of doing it at Wimbledon last year" Federer had 2 match points in that match, so came within one point ,surely?

Thiem has certainly got the game to beat Djokovic on Sunday, but I notice how he seized up serving for the match against Nadal, and very nearly lost it again in the tie break. For Djokovic, who has form when it comes to saving match points in slams, this has to give him the advantage if it's a close match..Reply

Nailed it. Thiem has the game and physicality to beat Nole on Sunday; it's basically in his head whether he'll do it or not. As a Nole fan, I wanted Rafa in the final - he's an old customer. Thiem scares me a lot (not as much as Wawrinka, of course).Reply

Thiem, Zverev, Kyrgios etc will only start winning after the big 3 retire. They don't have in them to win in their presence ( even though 1 of the 3 is almost reaching middle age). The next generation isn't as talented. We should consider us lucky to have watched 3 of the best ever slugging it out side by side, year after year for so long.Reply

Spot on - the ones that you mentioned are not in the same league as the current big 3 and also nowhere close to the great champions of past years playing at the same time in the Open era - Borg / McCenroe / Connors , or becker / Edberg or Sampras / Agassi for example. Borg virtually retired at the same age as Thiem is now but alreadyhaving won 11 GS !
Even a very , very good player like Andy Murray , but not a true great , had been in 5 GS finals winning 2 at the same age as Thiem.Reply

What an ingenious statement. As if all three will retire simultaneously. Novak being the youngest has at least 4 years more left, and if you think he will win all the Grand Slams in that period that is wishful thinking.Reply

Interesting match, but lots of mistakes by both men (which kind of made it more interesting!). Thiem has a chance on Sunday but has to play lights out. I know he beat Novak at RG in five sets last year, but that was a Novak who was furious (wrongly) at having to play in the wind and lost two sets before he got going - and even then barely lost. Thiem has the confidence that he knows he can beat Novak, which will help him in spades, but this is Novak in fine form and on hisbest court.

Thiem is so god that any Novak's resistance will be futile. I can say surely that Thiem will win 3 GS this year, I'm not sure about Wimbledon. He is fearless, fast and for the aging Novak, will be too good. Tennis was waiting for the champion like him for too long now.Reply

What a game - as a decent tennis player myself I've always wondered how Dominic Thiem can be so good despite being far from technically impeccable: he stays too far from the baseline and has a tendency to hit the ball low instead of hitting it on the rise, thus taking advantage of the other player's ball.Reply

It`s funny because I have seen Thiem play, indeed he beat (then rehabbing) Federer, but I have absolutely no recollection of his game at all. Normally I can recall something, also from the lower-rated players. (And no, it was not being in awe of Fed). I am not surprised he won today, at the moment he is probably the next-best placed, certainly an edge on the likes of Zverev.Reply

He grew up on clay and like most clay courters, Nadal included, likes to stay at the back and hit a falling ball with a game built around endurance and physicality. His strong (s-w) grips are not conducive to volleying either' so he's not that comfortable at the net, unlike say Federer or Evans. At the moment he doesn't, therefore, have a completely natural all-court game. Undoubtably he'll be working through all these things with Massu in training.Reply

Thiem is definitely the one who could do it. He’s strong, quick andclever.
Lots of ue today however. The quality was pretty low.Cone on Novak.

Thiem will have to bring his A-game to the final. But if he is as pumped up and aggressive as he was against Nadal, and if, especially on the crucial points, he plays to the same level, then he can beat Djokovic, no question. On the other hand, he might be a bit lack-lustre, as he was against Zverev. In that case it will be 17 for Djokovic at a canter.Reply

he can beat Djokovic indeed but the chances of beating him on this surface are rather slim. If this was Rome or Paris i would definitely agree, though as he's beaten him on clay on more occasionsReply

One point, actually, and twice. Having beaten Nadal in the SF, Federer twice had match points against Djokovic in the F.Reply
