Bruno Fernandes is congratulated after his penalty opened the scoring for Manchester United against Club Brugge at Old Trafford. Photograph: Oli Scarff/AFP via Getty Images Another scintillating Bruno Fernandes display swept Manchester Unitedinto the last
16 and on this showing they are serious contenders for a second Europa League crown in three years. Fernandes’s vision gives United a new dimension and elevates his teammates. The playmaker scored a second penalty in two games and though naysayers may claim this was “only” Club Brugge, United have
struggled against similar opponents under Ole Gunnar Solskjær. This was a performance that crushed the visitors and took United to seven matches unbeaten, a run that includes six clean sheets. It left the manager pleased. “I’m very happy tonight,” he said . “When you score goals and play like this it gives moreconfidence.”
ARSENAL SENT CRASHING OUT OF EUROPA LEAGUE BY LATE OLYMPIAKOS WINNERRead more
Of his star man Solskjær said: “Bruno is fit, in good form and we felt he was something we needed and so itproves.”
Odion Ighalo made a first start owing to Anthony Martial’s muscle injury, while Scott McTominay ended a two-month absence as Solskjær made seven changes from the first leg. The start was fast and furious. Juan Mata fired from 20-yards and forced Simon Mignolet to parry. The goalkeeper fired a long clearance into David Okereke’s path and though Harry Maguire was left flailing United scrambled clear. United were further troubled when Maxim De Cuyper crossed from the left and Sergio Romero inadvertently punched the ball to Mats Rits whoballooned over.
The pace was relentless as the outstanding Fernandes. If he was left frustrated after a foray that allowed him to unload a shot only for Mignolet to keep the match goalless but the deadlock seemed unlikely to last.. It was soon broken in farcical circumstances. Daniel James’s shot was curling into the corner before Simon Deli flung himself to his left in what would have been a save-of-the season contender if he was a goalkeeper. Serdar Gozubuyuk awarded the penalty for handball and showed the defender a red card but the comedy continued when the referee reviewed the incident on the pitch-side monitor. He confirmed the original decision and Fernandes, whose wait stretched past four minutes, converted. “I don’t know why the boy did it,” said Solskjær of Deli. “But that is not a fair attempt to stop a goalscoringopportunity.”

United’s control had tightened so they needed to turn their dominance into more goals. McTominay teed up James but he could not finish so Ighalo showed him how, courtesy of some fine Fernandes trickery. He twisted to the left of Brugge’s area and floated in a ball that reached Mata at the far post. His return pass was slide-rule precise for Ighalo, who bundled in a classic sniffer’s finish for his first goal for the club. The striker pointed to the heavens and revealed a T-shirt that carried a tribute to his deceased sister. Solskjær said: “I think as a fellow striker I know how important that first goal is. He is there where it sometimes hurts and that goal, was sharp, on the six-yard line when Juan puts it there: that’s a naturalstriker.”
The on-loan man went close to a second when holding off Federico Ricca but Mignolet saved. He could do nothing about the third, though. Fernandes – again the creator – tee-ed up McTominay and from outside the area the midfielder passed the ball precisely into thebottom corner.
Quick guide
ROUNDUP: INTER SEE OFF LUDOGORETS AT EMPTY SAN SIROShow Hide
INTERNAZIONALE came from behind on the night to beat Ludogorets 2-1 at an eerily quiet San Siro, completing a 4-1 aggregate victory in a game played behind closed doors due to coronavirus fears. No fans were present at the 70,000-capacity stadium as a near-post finish from Cristiano Biraghi and a Romelu Lukaku header denied the Bulgarians, who had taken the lead through Cauly Souza. "It seemed like a training session, playing behind closed doors created a very strange atmosphere," said Inter coach Antonio Conte. "The lads did well to put things back in place immediately after wesuffered the goal."
It was a night to forget for Portuguese sides, with BENFICA, PORTO and SPORTING all joining Braga in going out at the last-32 stage. Benfica drew 3-3 with SHAKHTAR DONETSK in Lisbon, losing 5-4 overall, while Porto were outclassed by LEVERKUSEN, who won 5-2 on aggregate. Sporting were twice within a minute of overcoming ISTANBUL BASAKSEHIR, only for Edin Visca to score on both occasions – first to send the game into extra time, and then to complete a 5-4 aggregate win from the penalty spot. Jaime Mata's early goal for GETAFE made the difference as they edged out AJAX despite a 2-1 defeat in Amsterdam. Elsewhere, Justin Kluivert cancelled out Jonathan David's opener as ROMA progressed with a 1-1 draw at GENT, while SEVILLA were held to a 0-0 draw by CLUJ, but edged through on away goals. Photograph: Emilio Andreoli/UEFAWas this helpful?
Thank you for your feedback. James made way for Tahith Chong for the second half in what was a golden chance for the 20-year-old to impress against 10-man opposition. His first contribution was to fall on his backside under pressure from Odilon Kossounou. When Mata was downed under the same player’s attention it was ruled a foul to the left of the D, but Fernandes spooned it wide. United were in cruise control playing pinball football at will and serving notice that no one will want to draw them in the last 16. Chong came off worse in a collision with Mignolet but was able to continue and when Fernandes’s match ended after 65 minutes he wandered off to deserved applause. Chong grew into the match as illustrated by a run and cross that fell invitingly to Luke Shaw. The Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email. Mason Greenwood entered for the closing stages and though the 18-year-old is United’s top-scorer in the competition it was left to Fred to complete the rout, scoring twice in the last eight minutes. Solskjær could joke about this. “I wasn’t sure if I was going to be alive the next time he scored a goal,” he said of the Brazilian.. Next is Sunday’s trip to Everton. Solskajer is unsure if Martial can feature. “He tried today – reported, had a fitness test this morning. It’s not a hamstring, it’s in and around the knee area,” the Norwegian said.MATCH STATS

Whisper it but that Ighalo goal was exactly the type that Martial and Rashford need to score more of, ones when the ball is rolling around within 12 yards of the line. They're great when running forwards into the area on the counter, not so good for scuffing them in from ballsacross the box.
Otherwise, all great really. Good run-outs for a few who needed it, rests for others... and goals n assists for Fred, Lingard... McTominayback.

The fact that we have had about 458 false dawns under ole should make me cautious about getting too excited about this united team.... and yet..... here I am ready to believe that this is the turning point for the lads. Solid end to the season, move on Pogba and bring in Timo Werner and Grealish, then who the fuck knows what could happen. We may never win the league again but if we score goals, move the ball forward quickly and scare the shit out…Jump to comment

That red card check was the most absurd VAR nonsense I've seen so far. Deli pulls off a magnificent diving save - completely bang to rights for all to see - but the ref has to faff around for an extra three or four minutes to check whether it was in fact a goalscoring opportunity. The ball was goalbound and was deliberately stopped by a hand... do we really need to pause the game for so long and heap pressure on the penalty taker? As an aside, de…

Good performance, great to see United move the ball so quickly. Bruno is some player, his passing and movement is something we have been missing for years. Ighalo did very well too, I thought his link up play was excellent and United seemed better with that central point to go to. Martial maybe should be playing off him instead of being the lone striker. Only bad point being Dan James was woeful again and actually offers nothing but his pace yet can barely beat a man. Poor boy shouldn’t be playing all these games though so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.Reply

"It's interesting to me that during the first half Fred was the ONLY midfielder that showed any desire to chase back, tackle run into space and make himself available. Pogba did none of the above! Yet it was Fred who was taken off at 1/2 time. Thus it becomes clear that either work rate means nothing or certain players are untouchable. I think the latter ." THAT IS A COMMENT I MADE IN DECEMBER LAST YEAR!! So glad to see Fred coming good and Pogba soon to be shown the door.Reply

A big few weeks coming up for United with the Premier League fight and the Europa League. It seems to me you've got some momentum at exactly the right time for any side, so if you can pull off 4th (or 5th) and win the Uefa Cup - considering how things were looking at the start of the year - I say hats off to you, that would be pretty impressive. Good luck. Liverpool fan.Reply

McT, second game back, absolutely bossed that game from DM first half. Deli? Deli! The Turkish ref would have appreciated that nominative determinism (google it).Reply

Judging purely on the away trip possibilities, I'd hope for maybe Sevilla in the next round. I like that place. Nowhere else is particularly jumping out. Roma definitely not, because that might be somewhere where people do jump out... from behind dustbins with knives in their hands to slash your arse. Rangers also wouldn't be my favourite option. Salzburg maybe for something different, some nice scenery, Salzkammergut, Hallstatt, Obertraun nearby. That might work. Not so bothered about the Mozart angle though to be honest but LASK won't have the scenery. Copenhagen a good drinking place although expensive. Inter Milan, fuck that unless you want to drink Corona. Istanbul a good lively one although less obvious for drinking.Wolves right out.

Professional football should enact some sort of "mercy rule" as in minor league baseball or the "standing eight count" in boxing, where the referee can stop a game if it gets too one-sided and out of hand. Surely there was no point in continuing this game after the end of the first period, with MU ahead 3-0 and Brugge playing with 10.Reply

Yeah I've noticed that one before. Absolutely bizarre. Either use it or don't but don't mix things up. Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos. Time Brazilian players stopped with their childish nicknames anyway, especially if the best they can do these days arenames like Fred.

My favourite Brazilian footballer’s name was a fancy Dan no. 10 who played here in the Costa Rican league back in the 1990’s. KleverPonce.

Let's see them face a good side, City will be the litmus test. And it was great to see ye beaten at Anfield. United an irrelevance in my lifetime, I honestly didn't think I'd see it.Reply

Interesting, as United's record against 'good' sides in recent seasons has actually been pretty...good. It's the shoddy slip-ups to lesser sides that have cost them. So they lost to a very good Liverpool side? Not the first, or last side there. LFC will deserve their title this year, and any true fan of the game will accept and applaud that, as they are comfortably the best side going around. I know you've been waiting 30 years and all - yes I know, 30 years no less - but do you little scallys have to be so childish and obnoxious? By the way, irony is when you go out of your way to make a comment about a team you don't even support being irrelevant. They obviouslyare not to you.

Job still has to be done. Up to December Utd could not score against 5 players they were so bad so we will make a fuss until the cows come home, thank you. But for run of the mill ABU commentary reason is not in your locker through your own hating and bile. Suck it up sonny. You’ll get over it.Reply

Simon Deli forgot his last name wasn't Mignolet. Other than that, United players showed progress: Luke Shaw is turning into a good wing-centerback, McTominay may have been the best player on the field, bar Bruno,Fred can score,
Mata can run (sort of),Ighie can poach,
and even Lingard can assist!Reply

It is early days, but BF's speed of touch, movement and positivity appears to have led to a marked improvement in the pace and purpose ofgeneral play.
However, it is not too fanciful to wonder whether BF will end up having a similarly impact as Cantona. (Of course, it is all relative. It is more or less certain that Utd won't win the league in the next few years. Utd are much worse off now than they were when Cantona arrived.)Reply

Let's get this right Deli saves a goal with his hand which give them a penalty and gets him sent off weakening his team. Not what you call deep thinking. Players are learning that cutting down an opponent in the area leads to this why cannot they learn this one basic lesson.Reply
