Lucas Tousart celebrates his goal in Lyon’s 1-0 Champions League last-16 victory over Juventus. Photograph: Philippe Desmazes/AFP via Getty Images Juventus’s hopes of reaching the Champions Leaguelast eight
suffered a blow when the Italian champions slumped to a 1-0 defeat in their last-16 first leg at Lyon. Midfielder Lucas Tousart scored the only goal on 31 minutes to give Lyon, who are bidding to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2010, a deserved win. It was Lyon’s first victory over Juventus, and Juventus’s
first defeat in the competition this season. The Serie A leaders lacked quality, with Cristiano Ronaldo rarely getting into scoring positions, and they will need to improve in the return leg on 17 March if they are to progress. Around 2,700 Juventus fans travelled from Piedmont, a region neighbouring the coronavirus-hit Lombardy, as the game went ahead as planned despite concern over the virus. On the pitch, Lyon were at their best, with Houssem Aouar and new signing Bruno Guimarães inspiring their team. “We were not the favourites and rightfully so, but we believed that we could unsettle Juventus,” said the midfielder Aouar. “But let’s not get carried away, there’s one full game left.” Juventus have only won four of their last eight competitive matches and their captain Leonardo Bonucci said his team had improved. “We messed up our first half, sometimes it happens,” he said. “We gifted one half and they scored at a moment when they were good athurting us.”
After a cagey start, Lyon made a clear chance when Karl Toko-Ekambi’s header at the near post from Aouar’s corner hit the crossbar. Aouar then burst into the area and delivered a cutback that Tousart placed into the top corner from close range to put the Frenchside ahead.
Juventus were at the time down to 10 men as Matthijs de Ligt was getting treatment for blood on his head after being accidentally stamped on by his teammate Alex Sandro. The visitors threatened through Ronaldo but he shot just wide at the end of a counterattack with Juve looking short on confidence. The Italian side upped the pressure after the interval as Lyon sat back and hoped to hurt Maurizio Sarri’s team on the break. Paulo Dybala went close for Juve with a volley, the substitute Gonzalo Higuaín wasted a couple of chances and Dybala had a goal ruled out for offside as Lyon held firm.MATCH STATS

We have been playing poor football for most the season. Other than Ronaldo scoring plentifully, Dybala performing well in his often changing roles and some signs of welcome development from Bentancur (almost in spite of the varied roles and stop start runs in the side) there has been stagnation all across the side under Sarri. There is no obvious tactical identity. We are in late February and only of late has he moved Ramsey and Juan to their nat…Jump to comment

Great result for Lyon. Before this they had drawn 7 out of their last 8 home games in the Champions League so have been tough to beat. They have a good young team and if they can hold on to their players (unlikely) then they certainly have a bright future. I suspect the second leg will be another story but I will be cheering on the LesGones.

Unless Juventus get rid of Sarri they will end up potless this season for the first time in - what would it be, ten years? Sticking rigidly to his preconceived system’ is making them too wooden and predictable. When they get results, they can be chalked up to the muscle memory of great individuals, eg Dybala’s free-kick goal the other week. As a team, they are all too audibly creaking. I don't really watch Juve matches, but how can a team that played so badly be on top of Serie A? I mean 0 shots on target? Their defending on Lyon's goal? Just shambolic. Obviously, Sarri needs to work out how to play against teams that play a back three. If I'm not mistaken 4 of their 5 losses so far this season have come against that kind of formation. Well done to Lyon. I honestly didn't think they'd get anything out of this, even with their reputation of turning it on only for the bigoccasions.

I really like this result. Probably not enough as Juventus last season turned a 2-0 defeat in Madrid around at home, but very well and brave done by Lyon - who before the round of 16 must have been the leastfavoured team.

Juve totally toothless in first half with this slightly odd Ronaldo/Dybala/Cuadrado attack without a proper striker. Better in the last half hour after Higuain entrance but too late to score. Lyon displayed slick passing and deserved their short victory on the whole. Maybe it will get them clicking at last in this shambolic season. Bruno Guimaraes looks like a great addition to the midfield.Reply

Why on earth did they sack Allegri? And hire Sarri off the back of a not-too-spectacular one-season stint at Chelsea? It's beyond me why they ever wanted to replace a manager that won them a Scudetto a season and got them to two CL finals and on top of that cut an elegant figure on the sidelines without the intention of going for someone of Guardiola's or Klopp's calibre. Or just Guardiola or Klopp. Why Sarri? Why? They go buy Ronaldo and the next season they bring in this old banker to smoke contemptuous into this sculpted face.Reply

Instead we led at the break, an deservedly so ! There was only one team in the first 45 minutes, and it was OL. then Rudi Garcia (and maybe tiredness) struck, and we spent the whole second half in our box, desperately defending our slender advantage. It is a testament to the defensive improvement we had since "Pep" Genesio departed that Juve didn't do much despite their uncontested dominance, although we were really lucky at the end as mentioned before. Still, game on for the return leg which I did not expect. I hope Rudi will not retract his genital organs, as he's famously known for in France. I reckon if we go there with an attacking team, we score and it's 50-50. If we go full defense, we concede 2 and lose. So please Rudi, be ambitious ! PS: please be permissive on the format of the post, French native posting under alcohol after rubbing it into the nose of confident Juve-supporting colleagues tonight :)Reply

I watched this match and thought both Rabiot and Betancur played poorly in the first half. Pjanic was clearly being target by Lyon's midfielders as he was Juve's biggest threats. Maybe that's why he got tired and had to be subbed. Lyon played very well and managed the game for the most part. Maybe if they had better strikers, they'd have scored at least one more goal. Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães played quite well considering itwas his UCL debut.

Pjanic is coming off injury that's why he was subbed. That and because he sucked. Every team targets Pjanic because it's easy to do and it's all you have to do to disrupt Sarri's plan. The other midfielders need to be dynamic and forward looking but Rabiot and Bentanur are slow anduseless.

Lyon actually had several key players injured like Depay, Kone, Rafaeletc..
They probably won't go through but it was a very good performance against a top team like Juve. To restrict them to 0 shots on target is impressive considering the big names Juve have in attack.Reply

Not sure if you could still refer to Juve as a “top team”. Even if they do get through to the QF, I don’t think they are good enough to go all the way to win it. In fact none of the three Italian sides are strong enough to win it. The winner is still likely to be an English or Spanish club. Bayern Munich look like the only German side strong enough to go all the way.Reply

A few years ago he hinted he would coach Qatar in the 2022 World Cup. I assume he will need a year or so to get the team up to his standards, so maybe fulfil his contract at Man City, I think it runs out in 2021, then go there? It was a few years ago though and he may have said it because he was paid to say it.Reply

Pep said last week that he will stay until 2022/23 at City even if they go down through FA sanctions. Of course he just might move like most of the top level City stars if they get bumped down to League 1. However, City might win at CAS and if they do then the CL ban may well be lifted or shortened and if the former the FA won't be able to relegate them either. The CAS result will probably seal what Guardiola does.Reply

Ok it is Juve not known for losing but really "slumped" to an away loss in first leg by one goal??!! Let's see the second leg before slumping takes over!Reply

Sarri was such a strange appointment. His brief was to give the team a football identity, the Juve hierachy weren't expecting that identity to be 'trophy-less'.Reply

The greatest ovation / scream tonight in 'El chiringuito inside' program from the Valencia and Barcelona (but above all) Messi fanatic Cristibal Soria was when he knew that Cristiano Ronaldo hadn't scored. He literally screamed of joy. That should tell you everything you need to know about the importance of CR7.Reply

We are in late February and only of late has he moved Ramsey and Juan to their natural roles. And still, the side seems set up to basically accommodate Ronaldo, not to maximise the collective. The midfield is unbalanced. Matuidi has to play to accommodate Ronaldo rarely remaining in the LW position. Pjanic has been poor, and seems even more out of sorts with Dybala or any other playing in the hole. De Ligt has been fairly good, but nothing of the dominant character we saw at Ajax (understandable given his age and the disarray of the Juveside).
As with the focus off the field, the focus on the field seems set up to maximize Ronaldo. Our league form has been very average indeed, for despite the results, we struggle against sides hugely inferior on paper, winning games with brief moments of individual quality (mainly Ronaldo or Dybala) and I can remember only 2 dominant performance in the last few months…against much weaker sides. We should be better than we are and have been, much of the responsibility is with Sarri whose poor man management and inability (or orders) to do no more than accommodate Ronaldo in his fairly free role and try shoe-horn the side around this are pivotal factors. And yet the management above him are also culpable. Agnelli said our season was excellent so far! Perhaps on a measure of twitter fans…yet not on the field for we have been less successful on the field than under Max. We have average FBs…with Pellegrini, a young and promising energeticlad loaned out.
We didn’t even know who we were going to have in the squad days before the season started, due to a frantic attempt to move on players regardless of their sporting value to the side. We had Emre Can - who we tried to morph into Vidal - then sold him to Dortmund where he instantly prospers in his more natural DM/CM pivot role. Didnt replace him the in squad. We cruelly and ignorantly ostracized Mandzukic from the squad before sending him to the Middle East - this a player who had not only give his all for the side, behaved impeccably but also proven an extremely versatile always potent first team player. We signed Kuleseveski…when the side is crying out for creativity and presence in the CM connection to the front line…then let him stay onloan at Parma.
The major midfield renovation so long overdue ended up with two freesignings-
Rabiot. Clearly a player with mentality issues who has been very poor to sometimes average in black and white. Ramsey. Injured more than fit, on staggering wages, who has been mis-used for most the season when available. This was our major midfield upgrade. Both will be very hard indeed tomove on.
Demiral was a decent signing…shame he was mangled. The recruitment, choice of coach, focus on branding/marketing/ronaldo over building a winning team which is cohesive and striding purposefully towards a clear identity…all should come as no surprise to any long term fan of the club or game. The Lyon result and performance is no surprise at all. Its a continuation of a season with mainly poor form and rarely performances the sum of our parts let alone anything above that. We lack fight, cohesion, direction and the decisions made at board level in the last two years appear to be contributing mightily to the steady malaise on the field.Reply

It has always puzzled me why Emre Can was allowed to go on loan to Dortmund when it is quite clear that his presence in midfield was missing. I honestly don’t understand some of the tactics and playingstyle of Sarri.

He was left out of the CL squad entirely. Juve simply has too many players, too many midfielders specifically.Reply

As much as I respect Ronaldo, this game shows that perhaps he doesn't fit in with Sarri's football or he's reached his climax and on his way to retirement. I want to believe in Sarri's football philosophy, but he needs to be more flexible. The elbow from Marcelo to Dybala should have been possibly red-carded. He purposely turned back and struck up his elbow and caught Dybala in his face. The goal scene was bad communication and terrible defense by Pjanic who hasn't performed well recently. Pjanic should have gone to pressure but he instead went backward giving space and time to pass. The goal scene was a good play by Lyon, but the Juve midfield and defense had so much space in between them giving Dembele so much space to play. This is my analysis of this game. To Allianz bianconeri!Reply
