Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry wheels away in celebration after opening the scoring against Chelsea. Photograph: Glyn Kirk/AFP via Getty Images This time Bayern Munich finished with the authority of a side with no interest in ever letting Chelsea off the hook again. The gulf in class was enormous from beginning to end and, while there will be no shortage of nostalgia before the second leg takes place at the Allianz Arena on 18 March, it is unlikely to feel like much more than a sightseeing exercise when Frank Lampard’s erratic side visit the scene of their greatest triumph.
The painful truth is that a 3-0 defeat flattered Chelsea and, barring one of the greatest comebacks in the history of this competition, this tie is surely over. Bayern, seemingly on a mission to erase the memories of their inexplicable defeat to Chelsea in the 2012 final,
were just as devastating as they were when they smashed Tottenham 7-2 in October. The Bundesliga pacesettersmade
the side sitting fourth in the Premier League look second-rate and all but secured their place in the last eight of the Champions League during a brutal second half, sealing an emphatic win with two goals from Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski’s 39th goal of the season. It was Gnabry who took the game away from Chelsea with an electrifying four-minute burst shortly after half-time; to think Arsenal let him slip from their grasp. Gnabry has scored six in his last two visits to London and his understanding with Lewandowski, who created both of the German’s goals, was far too slick for Chelsea.
Lampard made no excuses. Chelsea remain a work in progress and their naive approach was summed up by Jorginho ruling himself out of the second leg after picking up a booking for dissent. There was also a late red card for Marcos Alonso after a VAR review spotted the Spaniard’s elbow on Lewandowski and, for all the references to that famous night in Munich eight years ago, there was never any sense that Chelsea believed they belonged in Bayern’s company. They conceded territory and possession from the first whistle. Bayern pressed aggressively, which has been their way since replacing Niko Kovac with Hans-Dieter Flick in November, and could have scored five times during the opening period. Joshua Kimmich and Thiago Alcântara controlled midfield, Kingsley Coman and Gnabry tormented Chelsea on the flanks and danger flared whenever Lewandowski dropped deep to link with Thomas Müller. Chelsea looked startled by the way the man on the ball always seemed to be surrounded by two red shirts. There was less than a minute on the clock when Jorginho cheaply conceded possession near his own area, allowing Müller to test Willy Caballero with a low drive.in March 2017.
Chelsea, using the 3-4-2-1 system that brought them victory over Tottenham last Saturday, offered little despite going close to snatching an unlikely lead when Alonso tested Manuel Neuer. While Ross Barkley and Mason Mount worked hard to support Olivier Giroud, the England midfielders lacked quality on the ball. The threat from Chelsea was sporadic and although Giroud had impressed against Spurs, the French striker’s cumbersome movement allowed Bayern’s centre-backs, Jérôme Boateng and David Alaba, to step up and squeezethe play.

Bayern knew they were unlikely to be inconvenienced by balls over the top and, on the rare occasions when they were forced to turn and chase back, the German champions were able to rely on the astonishing recovery speed of Alphonso Davies,
their 19-year-old left-back. In fairness to Lampard, Tammy Abraham did not look fit after coming on for Giroud and was seen grabbing his hamstring after warming down at the end. Ultimately it was hard to know what Lampard could have done differently. Chelsea’s transfer embargo left them unable to spend last summer and their failure to bring in any reinforcements last month meant they did not have the individuals to cope with Bayern, who took control when a slip from César Azpilicueta led to the opening goal for Gnabry. The 24-year-old released Lewandowski and the striker outwitted Caballero with a beautifully disguised ball back to Gnabry, who sidefooted into the empty net. The same combination made Bayern’s second, Gnabry playing another one-two with Lewandowski before finding the far corner with an angled drive. Chelsea had been blown away and their humiliation was complete when Davies, surging clear down the left, presented Lewandowski with atap-in.

I don't think Alonso or Georgehino fancied the trip to Germany. If I was Frank, I'd be concerned about my players picking up cards and excluding themselves from future games. It's almost like they're 'not picking' themselves !Reply

Frank has been a competent "interim" coach at Chelsea but it is clear that he is out of his depth. The English media are sycophants in relation to Lampard's managerial capabilities so that is why the narrative has developed that he is a "top class coach". As evidenced by absolutely nothing. The lack of quality in the Premier League has been startling this season. Hence, why Chelsea currently being in fourth place is hardly an endorsement of Frank's record. Tottenham and Manchester United have had wretched seasons and they are both still in the mix for the automatic Champions League spots.Reply

It’s hilarious to hear pundits on TV and radio talking about the great job “Frank” is doing. No attempt made at all to disguise the fact that he’s their mate and that they are unable to give an objective, professional decision. The reaction to “Frank masterminding” a one goal home win at the weekend over a hugely depleted Spurs team - which had played a European game just over 48 hours before - was particularly funny.Reply

Bayern were fantastic last night . Lewandoski and Davidson were on fire but the whole team played well . Quick , creative and clinical . I’d go as far to say that was one of the best performances I’ve seen in Europe for a few years . Chelsea never gave up but a lack of fluidity and when chances came across the 6 yard box no one there to finish . Here’s hoping they can turn it around but it’s going tobe really hard .

The best Chelsea player was a Real Madrid sub. You cant compete in CL with that squad. Give Lampard some time to reinforce / build his ownteam.

Ah, cue all the trolls coming out to play, making daft comments about Lampard and the team. Those of us who are realists didn't expect to get anything out of this tie, other than it being good experience for the young players. And when we have to go into the tie shorn of out best wide attacking players (CHO and Pulisic) a midfield dynamo (Kante), a strong goal-scoring AM (RLC), against a pretty much full-strength Bayern, what did everyone expect? The only question is what we learned from it. Well, we learned that Barkley isn't good enough against good teams. We learned that Azpi is no longer good enough at this level. We learned that Reece James is very inexperienced, as is Mason Mount. It was telling that Willian and Pedro were both passed over: their time is coming to an end atChelsea.
Tactically, Lampard had his hands tied by injuries. We really need wide players with pace to turn around the Bayern FBs, but we didn't have any available. If we'd had everyone fit and been able to play 4-2-3-1 with this lineup: James/Christiansen or Tomori/Rudiger/Emerson Kante/Jorginho or KovacicCHO/Munt/Pulisic
Giroud
I think we'd have given Bayern more to think about. The simple fact is that we'll be able to give Bayern more of a game in 12 months time than we can now. This isn't the time to p[anic and ditch the longer term plan. It's time to accept that were 12/24 months away from being able to challenge teams like Bayern, and that's fine. Rome wasn'tbuilt in a day.
But we do need to ditch certain players in the summer: Pedro and Willian will leave on frees. Barkley should be sold for whatever they can get for him. Kepa likewise. Alonso should be sold while he has some value. Bats likewise. If Giroud could be persuaded to stay, he be worth signing on another 1 year deal. One of Zouma or Christiansen should be moved on too. Azpi if he doesn't want to accept a back-uprole to James.
Then we need a good left FB, not a WB. We need another striker. A better keeper than Kepa (not difficult!). And a good CB who can offer more consistency than Rudiger. Oh, and a shout out for Willy, who had a very good game and should keep Kepa on the bench for the rest of the season.Reply

Keep Zouma. Sell Rudiger. Since his return from injury he has been the worst defender in the team. Last night he constantly played every Bayern player onside. In the league he is consistently being found out along with the equally hapless Kepa.Reply

I think Frank got tactically outwitted in this game. From the start it was easy to see that Jorginho and Kovacic were getting outnumbered in midfield and Chelsea should have switched to 5-3-2 (Barkley dropping in midfield and Mount playing around Giroud) a formation that Conte used in big games. I am not sure how much difference it would have made because Barkely on the night couldnt even control the ball.Reply

That would have given us very little to play out too, especially given than Giroud is no speedster. And Barkley just isn't anywhere near to good enough at this level. If you're going to play Giroud, you pretty much have to play the formation Lampard used. And, TBF, we had a couple of decent chances when it was still 0-0 and didn't capitalise because of some poor decisions by Mount.Reply

It's all about recruitment. Liverpool seem to have a strategy and with the arguable exception of Keita get it right every time. Identify targets in advance, wait until they are available if necessary and then integrate them into the team following a consistent tacticalplan.
Chelsea overpay on the world's most expensive keeper in a panic and then subsequently bench him. Or hire a rookie manager who flounders in heavyweight company.Reply

That's a patently stupid comment. Chelsea are trying to build a team, not buy one. And they choice to allow a manager and assistant who were familiar with the younger players at the club. Only nan idiot would expect us to compete with a team like Bayern this season, especially when we're missing Kante, RLC, CHO, Pulisic. If you took Thiago, Gnabry and Coman out of that Bayern team, they wouldn't play so well either.Reply

Wow - this was very clinical from Bayern. That was on the whole quite the experienced team Chelsea had out there. The German league is very strong with the top teams right now. I'm just not sure why English teams look so poor against this type of team? Leipzig were excellent against Spurs - but perhaps some belated acknowledgement that Spurs did OK in that first leg to still be in tie wouldn't be far off the mark? Apparently Spurs were humiliated last week - I'd suggest that happened against Bayern last year. For Chelsea - this ultimately means it's one less thing to worry about and probably opens up the top four slot a bit more for them.Reply

Exactly. Chelsea was never going to win the CL, so the EPL takes priority, thankfully. I fear that ManU's signing a useful midfielder and their luck with VAR means they'll get the 4th spotReply

As an Arsenal fan i am certainly not here to gloat about Chelsealosing to Bayern.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Man United are all in the cliche 'transition stage', and really only Liverpool can compete and win at the highestlevel in Europe.
Nothing to be sad about Chelsea, just a stark reminder of where our clubs are at currently...Reply

Great to see Bayern evolving. With Kovac, it was quite messy but Lewandowski bailed them out many atime.
Flick´s ideas and systems have slowly but surely found their place. Many a match Bayern managed to play one absolutely great half and one mediocre if not bad. Now Bayern seems to be moving in to the territory of one great half and one decent or good half.Looking very good.

Chelsea cannot cope with pressing that is difficult for any team; whenever Bayern found themselves pressed - only occasionally - they coped with it much better. Physically also, they were superior, faster; they were better coordinated. For Chelsea there were moments, quite a few in fact, when the ball was sent across the goal to be intercepted for goal, but the players were just spectators to such incidents and missed out on the required action, i.e. speedy instinctive reaction. A predator of a player who reads the game well, who instinctively anticipates such moments, is required. Abraham is not one. He is also not that strong for aerial play, not in the way Giroud is. The two could well play together; they are different, complimentary to each other. Why not try 3-5-2? Anyway, a lesson is a lesson if things are learnt from it.Reply

To be honest I think Lampard already over achieved by taking Chelsea into the KO stage of the CL. Should Chelsea consolidate on that 4th place spot in the EPL, I would say Lampard has had a successful 1st season given the fact that he was just managing Derby 12 months ago.Reply

I wouldn’t be surprised by that actually. Guardiola is well aware that they are now 22 points behind Liverpool in the league so there is really no point trying to play catch up. Hence it maybe more worthwhile to give everything in the CL and even rest some key players when they play the EPL. If their appeal to the UEFA fails (which is looking quite likely), then they will miss the CL for two consecutive seasons so this is perhaps their only chance for many years to win the CL. If I were Guardiola, I will be telling the players exactly that.Reply

The same thing was said of the Liverpool squad in 2005 and the Chelsea squad in 2012. Both of them had a poor EPL season finishing 5th eventually. And frankly, Real Madrid hasn’t had a wonderful seasoneither.

On a VAR note (sorry!) why does everything in England have to be introduced with the maximum of fuss and the minimum of common sense? Elsewhere in the world VAR has been brought in without the massive 'controversies' and with the on field ref looking at the pitch monitors to decide for himself, like tonight. Much of the hysteria over VAR has been generated by the media to give them something to talk about as they refuse to discuss cheating by players which makes it difficult for refs in the first place. Mike Riley should just get Stockley Park to refer subjective decisions to the ref on the pitch and then keep out of it.Reply
