throughout this tepid affair yet still remain favourites to reach the last 16 at the expense of Club Brugge in next week’s return leg. Towards the end here snow fell, replacing the rain, on a night when each side was frozen in a deep below-par state. While Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side have the away goal, whether United possess the talent and skill to win this competition for a second time in four seasons is doubtful. “It was a difficult game against a well organised team in difficult conditions,” said the manager. “I don’t think it was one of thebest games.”

Solskjær made six changes for this second of three games in seven days, with Anthony Martial leading a 3-4-2‑1, while Philippe Clement’s side had the former Liverpool No 1 Simon Mignolet behind a5-3-2.
United’s win at Chelsea on Monday was the perfect way to commence the closing phase of the campaign following the winter break. The question, though, remained the same: might it finally initiate a formidable run of form that has been elusive since the beginning of Solskjær’s tenure. They started well, but that would prove a false augury in a half when United were largely dismal until the last 10minutes.
From kick-off Nemanja Matic hit Diogo Dalot with a diagonal along the right and his flick was collected inside Brugge’s area by Martial. Moments later United had a scare, though. Brandon Williams missed a challenge, enabling Emmanuel Bonaventure to advance towards Sergio Romero in the United goal. When the ball found Hans Vanaken, Brugge’s captain seemed certain to score, but Matic intervened and the danger fizzled out. United threatened again via a sequence that began with Victor Lindelöf and Dalot exchanging passes inside their half and featured a contribution from Luke Shaw before Andreas Pereira’s shot was saved by Mignolet low to his left. Now, the Brugge goalkeeper was about to have a prime role in United conceding.Images
Matic overran the ball to give Brugge a goal-kick. Mignolet took this quickly, hitting a long delivery through the middle. This was collected by Bonaventure, who held off Williams and calmly lobbed the advancing Romero. United immediately claimed to the referee, Aleksei Kulbakov, that Mignolet had hit a moving ball but despite VAR being in use from this round on, the Belarusian was unmoved. Here was a test for United and one that might have become sterner if Mats Rits had not scuffed an attempt near Romero’s goal. United escaped but continued to be vulnerable whenever the home side attacked. Harry Maguire was caught out of position so Percy Tau dropped in behind and from the ensuing play Bonaventure broke the United ranks again. This time Romero saved his shot at a tight anglefrom close in.
The home crowd was in raucous voice. When Shaw’s pass put Maguire under pressure close to his goal, the captain bought a foul by falling as Tau approached and the spectators were in uproar. FRASER FORSTER RESCUES CELTIC WITH PENALTY SAVE AGAINST COPENHAGENRead more
Solskjær may have looked at Bruno Fernandes on the bench and decided his midfield poise was required. United were poor, embodied by Maguire scooping a regulation pass straight out. Yet from this error United equalised. Maxim De Cuyper aimed his throw-in at Brandon Mechele near halfway but the centre-back dozed, Martial stole the ball, swooped towards Mignolet and finished for a fine solo strike to follow hisopener at Chelsea.
Solskjær said: “It is a good goal he wasn’t really in the game – he didn’t make enough runs in behind, it was a frustrating night for him. He’s got two in two and you’ve to be patient as a striker – when the chance comes.” Martial’s 14th of the season silenced the stadium aside from the travelling support and he came close to adding another. Once more his skill fashioned him space and he was unlucky to see a left-foot shot from a 20-yard angle rebound off Mignolet’s left post, the keeper’s fingertips saving his side. United started the second half brightly but as with the first faded. First, Juan Mata fed Dalot and his curving cross came close to creating a chance for Martial. Then Mata slipped in the Frenchman but when he should have shot he tried a return ball to the Spaniard and the move broke down. The Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email. From here any quality seeped from the contest – each side proving bereft of a spark. On show was a hodgepodge of mistimed touches andpasses.
Solskjær put on Odion Ighalo, Fred and Fernandes for the last phase of the match and though no real upturn occurred in his brief cameo the last of these managed four shots – the most for United, which was indicative of how poor they were. “He made a difference in 10 minutes,” Solskjær said, after a night that will not be long remembered.MATCH STATS

Having to play a tough away league game on Monday night and then play an away leg in Europe 3 days later is ludicrous, not just for United but for any PL team in Europe. Other leagues allow their clubs to rearrange league matches to allow them more time to prepare for European games, on the basis that more success reflects well on theirdomestic game.

Decent result considering the team we put out. Bruno looks a different class- certainly a huge improvement on jlingz and pereira. Hopefully we put out a slightly stronger team in the home leg, as I still dont see us getting 4th without pogba / rashford (and yes i know 5th is CL but lets be honest, Citys ban wont last.) Europa remains our best opportunity to CL, we should go for it.Jump to comment

A poor report on a wet night in Brugges. Matic didn't overrun the ball; it was a Man Utd corner. Solskjaer fielded a rotation max team and against Belgium's top side, were nearly found out. Williams and others found themselves stretched, others, such as Lingard and Mata, faced their limitations. Martial is not someone who you can bank on for everything for all the game. He comes in and out, brilliant as he can be, but he needs support and rivalry…Jump to comment

I happen to watch these games on French TV, and the commentary is always insightful, perhaps because said commentators don't really have a dog in the fight (well, they love every French player...), and they always do a lot of technical skill analysis. At certain points tonight they were literally _laughing_ at Utd's poor basic skills of first touch, pass-weighting, decision making, easily-pressed etc etc. And at a couple of other points they illustrated that with Utd in possession, every single red shirt had his back to the Bruges goal. We seem to be having a long, long wait for the famed "progress"......... Only "highlights" for me tonight were Martial had a few "hungry" moments and looked a little less sullen than usual. Mata again looked like the only Utd guy who can actually play football. Well, until Bruno F. came on. Luke Shaw I thought had a decent game (and has had a decent season, I think). I think it was bold, and probably right, to make Brandon Williams play 90 minutes, to gain full-match-experience - many a harsher manager would have pulled him off after 30. There were some other guys in red too, though I don't remember much about them.Reply

Without Rashford United aren’t winning this thing. I’m far from a United troll by the way, but this isn’t a season for trophies. Asking Martial and Greenwood to compete on three fronts, it won’t work. Same as my club, United should have one target now - secure Champions League football next year and use that money to build the side. Oh and sell Pogba too, there’s no way he’s this injured.Reply

Decent result for United but the tie is far from over. They've had some shockers in Europe at Old Trafford so Club Brugge can take heart from that. Harsh words on Martial considering he got the goal. Better luck for PL sides in the Europa League after tough nights for Spurs and Liverpool in the CL.Reply

For the first 40 minutes. Fucking shite after that once the completely unconvincing Ralph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes and the guns gotinvolved.
Whoever thought that having a triple-barreled luvvie as cockney gangster would work... Still, while they were going around on a boat and looking at stuff, itwas great.
Not sure how this relates to the game, but I'm sure we can match themup easily enough.

Bruges drew at Real Madrid in September. And by the way that kind of comment is old hat now, come up with something original if you are going to troll.Reply

Just by the by, didn't want the game because I hate BT Sport. Anyone else hate BT Sport? Grr. I wish I could offer something more productive. Although I see Pereira played, so I'll play the safe bet... Wasn't Pereira terrible tonight?Reply

Fernández just highlights the lack of quality in the squad. Get rid of Lingard and Pereira for a start and if we can swap Maguire for Madison that would be a massive step forward. Ole is drying to do what Fergie used to, that is massive squad rotation for cup matches, but without the personnel. The team is taking shape with the return of injured players. Fred and Fernandes should be the focal point of the team, ditch James and get a proper right winger and the return of Rashford and we should have a CL team.Reply

A decent enough result all in all - pretty crap conditions, and a poor enough performance but there were a few team changes and in those circumstances I will take the draw. I still think that Bruges could make it difficult at Old Trafford but we are probably 70/30 favouritesat this point.
Martial frustrates the hell out of me but it is great he has a couple of goals in consecutive games - I just hope he doesn't think that the amount of effort he puts in is still acceptable. First time I have seen Ighalo since he has joined us. He didn't look the sharpest and may have been following the same diet plan as Luke Shaw (big fan of pizza apparently), but need to give him a chance.Reply

Good game in atrocious conditions. Brugge drew 2-2 at Real Madrid so the idea that they were somehow an easy tie is ludicrous. United switched off expecting a corner and the ref and lino got the decision 100% wrong - it wasn't a hard call. Mignolet clearly had instructions to pump the ball long to Bonaventure or Tau and Romero made a rare mistake and was stranded way off his goal line as he was lobbed, instead of retreating which would have made the forward's taska whole lot harder.
The conditions helped United equalise with a throw gaining pace off the wet ground and allowing Martial to ignite the afterburners and race through to score a classy finish. After that it was pretty even game, with United unable to find a way past Brugge's parked bus, and always susceptible to a punt upfield and a fast counterattack. Fernandes had a late cameo for the last 15 minutes or so and instantly United looked a whole lot better. Pity Martial had gone off for Ighalo by then, and I would have liked to see Solksjaer playing two strikers by taking off the ineffective Mata or the wasteful Lingard. A draw and an away goal was a decent night's work and you'd fancy United to have a bit too much for the Belgians at Old Trafford. De Kuyper must have impressed watching PL scouts I reckon.Reply

Glad we got something out of the game. Suddenly it's not looking as bad as the media say things are at United. Can't wait for the Watford game and the return Europa League game. Player rotations will be keyfor us to succeed.

I think ManU should sack the medical and conditioning staff and buy the Leicester people. Why are so many United players going out with long term injuries? Other teams like Leicester and Wolves go game-after-game with the same players.Reply

Well - we’re happy to support whoever comes in, even Jose (maybe). Funnily enough you don’t see United really turn on their own manager or former players in the way other clubs have a habit of doing.Reply

Not really - he’s had one set of boos and cheerfully corrected. I don’t think you hear united fans booing former players when they go back. Suárez was murdered by Liverpool’s fans (he was an arrogant tosser but still) despite hauling them up their heights and thencashing in.

I hate it when people finish BTL comments with the phrase "just let that sink in for a moment" as they think they are making some deeply profound, ultra-wise comment about something that nobody else would have been intelligent enough to think of themselves. But _seriously._
Jessie Lingard. Professional footballer. Just let that sink in for amoment.

Liverpool here in peace (right now I think we both have one common subject of ridicule). Regarding Lingard, every club has (had) them. We had David Ngog. I swear I was a better footballer than he was wearing a Liverpool shirt. Yet he got to do it for £50k a week. Some of our use Traore as the player of disbelief - for me Ngog, every time. I would suggest Lingard is better than Ngog. Now, just let that sinkin for a moment.

A generally poor quality game, but everything changed in the 81st minute with the arrival in the game of Bruno Fernandes. He looks class, absolutely class. I can't wait to see him play with Rashford. Second leg will be 1-0 United.Reply

Different team with Bruno and Fred on the pitch. We were absolutely fucking dire without them. Clinical from martial- he doesn’t get enough credit for his finishing. He doesn’t get hundreds of chances a game like Salah et al, but he still puts them away. Doesn’t influence the game much though, he misses Rashford bombing into the box from the left in support. Not a terrible result overallReply

Martial is frustrating. Enough talent to play for any team in the world but lacks the application. If he had Rashford’s drive and desire he’d be genuinely world class.Reply

Better than 0-0. We'll surely deal with them at O.T. A bit frustrating for the haters that Bruges didn't get a slender lead to bring withthem.

There haven't been many occasions over the last 20 years that half of Man Utd's starting eleven wouldn't get in Norwich's first eleven. They are playing dire football as well, and based on what I saw, Brugge deserved to scrape it. Man Utd have actually been very lucky in a lot of the games where they have actually come away with something. In an Alan Partridge moment, the owners should be speaking into a dictaphone, 'sack Ole, sack Ole, for being unimaginative'.Reply
