Sachin Tendulkar talks to the Australian Women's Cricket team during the Bushfire Bash T20 match between the Ponting XI and the GilchristXI in Melbourne.
Bruce Jewell from Drouin West CFA was wearing the uniform that has become the new diggers' slouch hat of this time of national galvanisation. It was he who flipped the bat, and he who gave the day its cue. Looking at captains Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist, he said: "I'm like a 10-year-old again out here." Everyone involved – players, officials and fans – wound the clock on this breezy afternoon. Well, nearly everyone. At 16, Phoebe Litchfield doesn't have enough miles on her clock to rewind. Instead, she wound it forward, to a time when she can reasonably dream of playing regularly for Australia.GETTY IMAGES
Luke Hodge (left) has a laugh with Adam Gilchrist after getting hiswicket.
Mathew Hayden has been spared despite Nick Riewoldt looking to have run the cricket legend out. Plucked from Orange via Sydney Thunder in the WBBL, and barely suppressing a giggle as she walked to crease, she crashed the first ball she faced, from Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, out of the screws. It went straight to cover, but the crashing was the thing. It showed a natural's touch.READ MORE:

"It would have been nice to get some away, but it wasn't my day." Then she laughed: it was her day like no other in her life.Advertisement

Money rolled in for the Bushfire Relief appeal. One day she will read back that sentence and wonder if it was all a dream. The whole afternoon had that quality. On Monday, she will have to readjust her clock to eastern daylight saving time as she returns to high school in Orange. Everyone was someone else's hero this day; everyone was a kid again. Gilchrist said that in the preceding nets, it was like scrolling through your playlist on your phone, trying to pick your favourite. He had only two instructions to his team: "Go hell for leather first ball, because you can't get out – and don't bowl short to Ponting." Ponting's riding instructions were even pithier: "Have fun – but Iwant to win."
It was a day for picking a pet player, or an era, or for that matter a sport. Nick Riewoldt gave a good account of his inner cricketer self with two overs of left-arm seamers, but in the break walked around the milling throng taking a smartphone video, the fan favourite himself afanboy now.
Luke Hodge belted Melbourne Storm legend Cameron Smith for a couple of fours, then had his keepsake moment when he skidded an inswinger into Gilchrist's stumps. "When he loaded up, I thought it was going back over my head," Hodge said. "He said that bowling into the wind, it was too slow for him to hit!" Smith's misfortune was to be bowled by a wicked ball from Wasim Akram that the Pakistani legend might fancy would still be good for a top-order Test wicket. Smith's fortune was that it was his first ball,so on he went.
Lara, Matthew Hayden, Gilchrist, Shane Watson and Andrew Symonds all creamed sixes with consummate ease, but no non-cricketer did. The game is not as easy as they sometimes used to make it look, and still didthis day.
Hodge, a state-level under-age cricketer a long time ago, was one of many who was mesmerised. "To watch the way they hit the ball," he said. "And we go in there and try and hit the cover off it, and itdoes nothing."
Lara is 50 and hasn't played a Test match for nearly 15 years, but looked as if he will still be hitting inside-out over extra cover in another 15 years. Let's hope that if he has cause, it's not this oneagain.
Form is temporary, class permanent, they say. Then there's shape, as a distinct form. Truth be told, all these many legends were a little rounder and creakier than in their halcyon days. Cricket being cricket, most spent most of their time watching and waiting. As cameras and microphones roamed far and wide, they talked the walk more than they walked it, but no-one complained. Between innings, there was an impromptu highlight when Sachin Tendulkar, notional coach of the Ponting XI, was coaxed back into his pads to face an over from Australian women. stars Ellyse Perry and Annabelle Sutherland. All kept their dignity. In that moment, the clock was wound neither back nor forward; like everyone else, it stopped for a good look. It took Hayden to bowl an over in cap and bare feet, and some imaginative officiating from umpire Mel Jones for the scorebooks to be ruled square. Really, that was an aside. The only tally that mattered on the day was the sum raised for bushfire relief. Eventually, it was reckoned up at $7.7 million. In truth, the mere opening the Junction Oval gates this day for this mission was already a win. Everything else was like a glimpse of the majesty of Lara, a bonus.SMH
