WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Michigan basketball lost its first five roadgames this season.
Now, the Wolverines seem to have become road warriors. U-M won its fourth consecutive road game with a 71-63 victory over Purdue at Mackey Arena on Saturday afternoon. After a slow start, the Wolverines opened up a 15-point halftime lead and from there, never came close to trailing. The defense stifled the Boilermakers, while the offense began to bury shots and create wide-open looks at the rim. The Wolverines were led by Franz Wagner, who scored a career-high 22 points. The freshman wing made three of his first four 3s and scored a team-high 11 points in the first half. Livers (19) and center Jon Teske (11) also reached double figures. It was the second impressive road win of the week for Michigan, which beat Rutgers in Piscataway on Wednesday night and now has seven Quad 1 wins - home games against the NET ranking top 30, neutral-site games against the top 50 or road games against the top 75 – on the season. the team’s leading scorer who sat out Wednesday’s game with a right ankle injury. Purdue staked an early 9-5 lead after U-M scored just five points in the opening five minutes, but the Wolverines responded with a 12-2 run — taking the lead for good. U-M created numerous open looks at the rim off ball screens and inbounds plays. And while the Wolverines made just three of their first 14 3-pointers, they made their final three attempts of the half to open up a double-digit lead. Michigan's offense created assists on 11 of 15 made field goals with only one turnover, while the defense forced six turnovers and held Purdue to just 9 of 32 shooting. Boilermaker center Trevion Williams, who scored a career-high 36 points in the first meeting between the two teams, made just four of his first 12 shots and finished with 16 points on 7 of 20 shooting. Michigan lost starting guard Eli Brooks early in the second half when he collided face-first with Purdue's Nojel Eastern,
but the Wolverines kept their grip on the lead. They missed some free throws down the final stretch and the Boilermakers cut the lead to as little as eight, but then made 11 of their final 12 to seal the win. Michigan forward Isaiah Livers goes up for 3 against Purdue guard Jahaad Proctor during the first half of U-M's 71-63 win on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, in West Lafayette, Indiana. (Photo: Nikos Frazier, AP) Several Michigan players recently said they feel the team is playing as well as it did in the Bahamas, when the Wolverines won three consecutive games in as many days and jumped into the top-5 of the polls with a 7-0 record.
That might even be underselling how well U-M has played lately. The Wolverines have now won five straight and seven of their past eight. They've won big games at home. They've won big games on the road. And now, they have Livers, their leading scorer, back andhealthy.
This is a team that looks to be playing its best basketball – and peaking as the postseason draws closer. _Contact Orion Sang at osang@freepress.com. Follow him on Twitter @orion_sang . Read more on the Michigan Wolverinesand sign up for
