Residents of a Southern Downs town were urged to seek higher ground overnight amid fears a dam could fail and cause "dangerous downstreamflooding".
An emergency warning was issued by the Southern Downs Regional Council late on Friday after a resident spotted a 3.5-metre hole in the wall of the Bolzan Quarry Dam, north-west of Warwick. Drone footage of the 3.5-metre hole in the wall of the Bolzan Quarry Dam, which Talgai residents have been told to flee. "Residents need to act to protect life, leave now and move to higher ground," the council said in a statement. "Those evacuating have been urged to leave immediately and stay with family and friends in a safe area."Advertisement
After emergency repairs failed, social media posts and 5000 text messages were sent ordering the residents of 250 homes in low-lying parts of Talgai to evacuate immediately. The council said areas between Talgai West Road and Dalrymple Creek Road were expected to be affected should the 430-megalitre dam, which is at full capacity, burst. An engineer was sent to inspect the damage at first light on Saturday. The council said Queensland Fire and Emergency Services had developed a map of the area that was likely to be inundated, downstream of Dalrymple Creek Road, with nine properties in that area evacuated. An evacuation centre set up at Warwick Christian College has sincebeen closed.
"Evacuees are advised to seek shelter with family and friends in the first instance," the council said in an 8am update. Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie was confident people living downstream from the failing dam would get out in time and that the deluge would dissipate quickly. Cr Dobie said the dam hadn't completely failed and she was confident those in the path of the floodwaters would be able to get out. "The land is really flat so the water will just go out over that land, and by the time it has got a bit downstream, it will have dissipated," she told _The Chronicle_ late on Friday night. "I have confidence in the people who live there. This is their land, they know what happens, and they will do the right thing and knowwhere to go."
Police confirmed a further five properties were door-knocked on Saturday morning, with all residents self-evacuating. "Emergency services are working with dam engineers to ensure all precautions have been taken," police said in a statement. "Engineers have met with the dam’s owners this morning."-WITH AAP
