The armed attacker, believed to be 24 years' old and known to police, punched and stabbed a random 26-year-old male tourist nearby before patrolling police confronted him soon after. Forensic officers examine the scene near Quest apartments and the Westin Hotel.Credit:Tony Moore Emergency services were called to Mary and Edwards streets about 10am on Sunday and police said the man "charged" at officers with theknife.
The man died in the middle of a busy Mary Street. The shooting took place near Quest River Park Central apartments and directly oppositethe Westin Hotel.
Mary Street remained closed between Edward and Albert streets, with significant delays expected. A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed paramedics took the tourist to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. Mary Street remains closed and police have asked drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area.Credit:Tony Moore Detective Superintendent Tony Fleming said a tourist couple were stopped in the street by the attacker, before he punched the male tourist in the face and stabbed him in the back. The male victim only required one stitch for the back wound and was released from hospital early on Sunday afternoon, allowing detectives to interview him and take a full statement. Superintendent Fleming said patrolling police then saw a man matching the attacker's description further down Mary Street and confronted him, before he was shot dead. The stabbing and associated shooting were not being treated as aterrorist incident.
What appears to be the remnant of a bullet lies near a police marker on Mary Street.Credit:Tony Moore What appeared to be the remnant of a bullet was sitting about 100 metres from where the man died, with investigators interviewing witnesses at the scene into Sunday afternoon. Witness Susan Latham said she had just stepped out onto her balcony to smoke a cigarette at Oaks Felix hotel on nearby Felix Street, when she heard the semi-automatic gunfire. "It was one , followed by three more, followed by two, all in rapid succession," she said. "It sounded semi-automatic, it sounded like a police pistol. "I turned around and there was a man lying on the ground with several police officers around him. Traffic was starting to pile up and peoplewere running away.
"I saw police go over and kick something out of his hand, then they performed CPR on him for probably three to four minutes and five minutes later, the sheet went over him." Ms Latham grew up in Brisbane, before moving to Townsville more than 20 years ago. She only moved back to the River City for work fiveweeks ago.
"It was a bit of a shock for this to happen so close, but I will still be staying, because I work here now," she said. "The police did a really good job of making sure the public was safe." Detectives were speaking to staff from the adjacent Quest River Park Central apartments and the Westin Hotel, with both blocks of apartments cordoned off. It is the second time in as many months the Westin has been in the headlines after the Chinese national women's soccer team was quarantined in the hotel for two weeks due to coronavirus fears. The incident was under investigation by the police service's ethical standards command on behalf of the state coroner, with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.*
