Why does WWF work on the EU level? The EU is responsible for approximately 80% of environmental laws in the member states and for policies such as agriculture, fisheries, regional aid, climate and energy, trade and development cooperation.BIODIVERSITY
Nature restoration: Helping people, biodiversity and climate. The publication Nature restoration: Helping people, biodiversity and climate showcases a collection of real-world success stories of nature restoration and presents key asks for the upcoming legally-binding nature restoration targets to be proposed by the European Commission in 2021. From flourishing ecotourism in Romania to local STEPPING UP: THE CONTINUING IMPACT OF EU CONSUMPTION ON The EU is the second biggest importer of deforestation after China. In 2017, the EU was responsible for 16% of deforestation associated with international trade, NATURE POSITIVE BY 2030 Human activities are driving catastrophic biodiversity loss and exacerbating already dangerous levels of climate change. In 2021, Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will agree on a post-2020 global biodiversity framework which has the potential to transform our world to become nature positive by 2030, but this will only be possible with a high level of political commitment. ‘FIT FOR 55%’: WHAT IS IT AND WHAT DOES WWF WANT? The ‘55’ refers to the 55% net emissions reduction target for 2030 that EU leaders signed off on last year. The aim of the ‘Fit for 55’ package is to update the EU’s 2030 climate and energy laws to reflect this higher target. HYDROGEN STRATEGY OPENS ARMS TO FOSSIL FUELS Energy efficiency and electrification must come first. The EU hydrogen strategy, published today, risks delaying industrial decarbonisationby keeping the
EU CONSUMPTION RESPONSIBLE FOR 16% OF TROPICAL The EU is the second biggest importer of deforestation after China. In 2017, the EU was responsible for 16% of deforestation associated with international trade, totalling 203,000 hectares and 116 million tonnesof CO₂.
WWF REPORT HIGHLIGHTS NEW CHEMICAL CONCERNS A WWF report published today reveals a collection of recent scientific evidence for contamination of both people and wildlife, such as whales, polar bears, seals and falcons, by a wide range of chemicals used in common consumer products. The release of the report marks the launch of WWF's DetoX Campaign for the adoption of a stronger EU lawon chemicals.
EVALUATING EUROPE'S COURSE TO SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES BY Progress with implementation of the latest Common Fisheries Policy has been slow to rebuild fish stocks, protect marine ecosystems and secure the long-term livelihoods of communities that depend upon fishpopulations.

WWF AND 90+ NGOS CALL ON MEPS TO HALT APPROVAL OF ‘GREEN In a public letter, groups such as WWF, Transport & Environment (T&E), Greenpeace, and BEUC call on the 705 MEPs to suspend scrutiny of the EU Commission’s ‘Taxonomy of sustainable investments’ until other crucial policies and pieces of legislation - the Renewable Energy Directive and the EU Forest Strategy, in particular - are disclosed later this year. EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT BOOSTS NATURE RESTORATION AND This afternoon, the European Parliament rejected the main attempts to weaken the ambition of its own-initiative report on biodiversity. The final vote on the full report will follow later this evening, but its content is now clear: a year after the European Commission first presented the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the Parliament has fully endorsed it and is calling for ambitiousEVENTS | WWF
