GENOCIDE OF THE ARMENIANS « WORLD WITHOUT GENOCIDE During World War l, 1.5 million Armenians were deported and massacred in the Ottoman Empire (modern-day Turkey). The Ottoman Empire existed in the Balkan region of the Middle East from 1300-1923. CAMBODIA « WORLD WITHOUT GENOCIDE In 1970, the Khmer Rouge began a civil war with the U.S.-backed Khmer Republic, which was under Lieutenant-General Lon Nol at the time. Lon Nol’s government assumed a pro-Western, anti-Communist stance and demanded the withdrawal of North DARFUR - WORLD WITHOUT GENOCIDE - MAKING IT OUR LEGACY The first civil war ended in 1972 but broke out again in 1983. The second war and famine-related effects resulted in more than 4 million people being displaced and, according to rebel estimates, more than 2 million deaths occurred over a period of two decades. CHINA – THE UYGHURS « WORLD WITHOUT GENOCIDE Xinji ang is the largest autonomous region in China, taking up much of the country’s western border. While briefly independent in the 1940’s, the region fell under China’s control in 1949 after the Community Party took power. The region is home to roughly 21 million people, with 10 million of those identifying as Muslim Uyghurs. The region holds vast natural resources, making it an ARGENTINA « WORLD WITHOUT GENOCIDE Argentina had been plagued by political instability, military rule, and a crumbling economy for decades. In 1976, General Jorge Videla took advantage of these conditions, seizing power and establishing a military junta, or dictatorship. IVORY COAST (COTE D’IVOIRE) « WORLD WITHOUT GENOCIDE In November 2010, Cote d’Ivoire held a long-postponed election. Incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo faced challenger Alassane Ouattara. Ivorians’ votes were divided sharply across regional and ethnic lines, with Gbagbo getting votes from primarily the south and west regions and Ouattara the north. BOSNIA « WORLD WITHOUT GENOCIDE The end of the Cold War and the decline of Communism greatly altered the international political scene. The reunification of Germany, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the departure of Czechoslovakia from Communist influence were among some of the changes. WORLD WITHOUT GENOCIDE Our Mission. ABOUT US « WORLD WITHOUT GENOCIDE In 2005, Dr. Ellen J. Kennedy spent two weeks in Rwanda. She met a young Rwandan woman, Alice Musabende. Alice was orphaned at age 14 during the Rwandan genocide, losing her grandparents, parents, 12-year-old sister, and 9-year-old and 2-year-old brothers. Children were sent to boarding schools where they were forbidden to speak their tribal languages and were required to wear American clothes and cut their hair. DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO « WORLD WITHOUT GENOCIDE The violence in DRC is closely related to the genocide that occurred in Rwanda in 1994. In this genocide, groups of hard-line militant Hutus, known as the Interahamwe, slaughtered ethnic Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus. The RPF (Rwandan Patriotic Front), a Tutsi-led militia, defeated the Hutu movement and came to power in July 1994. .
