WILD DUCK CREEK DUCK MUCK 2017 A huge, huge wine, grit and grip, tang and an avalanche of flavour, somewhat out of my sphere of drinking but I can stand back and be in awe. This inspires that. Strap in. Tasted : JUL20. Alcohol : 16.4%. Price : $380. Closure : Screwcap. Drink : 2020 - 2030. Visit winerywebsite.
STANDISH WINE CO LAMELLA SHIRAZ 2019 Hutton Vale farm is the vineyard source for Lamella. GW: Liquorice, chocolate dipped cherries, sage and spice, moderate coffee oak, almost a violet perfume. Ripe and rich, laced with graphite tannin, but carries itself with some grace, by which I mean it’s powerful, butnot heavy.
BLUE POLES ALLOURAN MERLOT CABERNET FRANC 2018 A special site here, I feel, and if I were to draw a long bow, I’d say this was the Margaret River equivalent of Marius of McLaren Vale. One more vintage to come from Marius, though hopefully many more to hoist from Blue Poles. BREAM CREEK RESERVE OLD VINE RIESLING 2018 Bream Creek has been around since the 1970s and the Reserve Old Vine Riesling is made from the first plantings in 1974. Older vines should bring intensity and focus and that is exactly what is happening here. The green apple is a focused Bramley apple, lemon zest, sherbet, grapefruit curd, lemon blossom and fresh limes all are precise andintense.
R. D’MEURE COAL VALLEY RIESLING 2019 R. D’Meure Coal Valley Riesling 2019. Posted on 08 May 2021. There’s a remarkable suite of wines that’s come out of this pint-sized producer based in Birchs Bay, Tasmania. Rory Duggan is custodian of the lauded d’Meure vineyard site and continues at pace with patiently made and released wines. This wine emerges from CoalValley, however.
LECONFIELD CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2006 I’ve been tasting this wine over the past 24 hours and the longer it sits the more outstanding it seems. This is a helluva classy drop. It’s thick with blackcurrant, chocolate, molasses and crushed rock/gravel-like flavours, though what really rings my bells is the long, firm, ropey tannin pulling from the mid-plate onwards. TYRRELL’S VAT 47 CHARDONNAY 2018 Tyrrell’s Vat 47 Chardonnay 2018. Posted on 05 November 2018. It’s only been bottled for a week or two, I believe. The Semillon wines are easier to pick, but such young Chardonnay takes a little bit of bending over the steaming bowl to see the future. All that being said, Vat 47 is pretty much ‘money in the bank’ when it comes toMERITE MERLOT 2015
A great deal of work, thought and application has gone into the merlot vines at Ruckus, in the Wrattonbully region of South Australia. I liked the 2013 version of the estate’s Merite Merlot but would have liked to see more vineyard in the glass, and less cooper. MAYFORD JOHN WARWICK CHARDONNAY 2019 12.9% alcohol but wow does it have a lot to offer. Intensity of flavour here is fantastic. It’s a jolly sort of wine, medium-bodied and fragrant, alive with juicy red fruits, a fine dusting of tannin, a little bit of chewiness, and a dried herb and potpourri finish of good length. It’s not profound, as WENDOUREE MALBEC 2018 It was the first of its kind in Australia and remains the most active. It is unbiased, unaligned, rigorously independent, realistic and fair. We cover Australian wine principally but we extend coverage across the wider world of wine. We taste in a global context, and call things as we see them. The WINEFRONT is run by Campbell Mattinson, Gary BROVIA BAROLO VILLERO 2015 Sweet red cherry, spice, liquorice root, a little wet clay earthiness and shag tobacco. It’s medium bodied, pure in red fruit with an almost watermelon succulence (you’ll see), supple fine and persistent tannin, spice and perfume, and a fairy floss pretty red-fruited finish of superb length. Boy, this is an exceptional wine. CASCINA LUISIN BARBARESCO ASILI 2016 Average age of vines is 65 years. Importer: Primavera Selections. Delicate expression of Barbaresco here, all red cherry, strawberry, nutmeg and liquorice root. It’s light to medium-bodied, fresh acidity and fine chalk dust tannin, gently etched onto the palate rather than a flood of flavour, finely wrought and long and cool toclose.
WOLF BLASS GREY LABEL SHIRAZ 2014 From vineyards in McLaren Vale, this hangs out in French and American oak for 18 months. Grey Label typically doesn’t resonate with me as much as Black Label does, or have the impact of BL, but there’s tends to be decent drinkability here. LANSON GOLD LABEL VINTAGE BRUT 2005 Honey, truffle, toasty notes, caramel and toffee apple characters. Ripe, rich scents but still feels fresh. Bold, creamy strike of wine, shows some blackcurrant edges in the appley tang, drives long, piercing with tight bubbles and lemony-fresh acidity. Joins the dots well. Importer: Pinnacle. LEO BURING LEONAY DWQ18 CLARE VALLEY RIESLING 2013 Leo Buring Leonay DWQ18 Clare Valley Riesling 2013. Posted on 30 September 2013. The other star wine in a quick bracket of five 2013 Clare Valley Rieslings. A more subdued and settled wine with an almost chalky sort of character, lemon and tonic flavour, packed full of minerally goodness and fine through the length of palate. The enclave sounds like the sort of place where you might perform a ritual sacrifice, which is fine by me, so long as they are all committed Pinot Noir drinkers. SHOTTESBROOKE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2012 Shottesbrooke Cabernet Sauvignon 2012. Posted on 04 September 2014. Carbon copy of the excellent 2010 cabernet release out of McLaren Vale’s Shottesbrooke winery. Sweet fruit, grainy/sinewy tannin, varietal leaf-and-dust notes, smooth texture and dark chocolate notes. Attractive combination in the books of most red drinkers. WILD DUCK CREEK DUCK MUCK 2017 A huge, huge wine, grit and grip, tang and an avalanche of flavour, somewhat out of my sphere of drinking but I can stand back and be in awe. This inspires that. Strap in. Tasted : JUL20. Alcohol : 16.4%. Price : $380. Closure : Screwcap. Drink : 2020 - 2030. Visit winerywebsite.
GRANT BURGE FILSELL SHIRAZ 2009 Filsell Shiraz is always made in a comically over-oaked style – but this 2009 release happens to be a very good version of one. It’s bigand blokey but it
ST HUGO CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2013 Medium to full bodied, cool mentholated black fruit flavours, plush powdery almost chocolaty tannin, pleasant spiciness and a long savoury finish trailing with drying tannin and vanilla perfume. WHAT IS THE WINE FRONT The WINEFRONT has been a leading wine review and information site since 2002. It was the first of its kind in Australia and remains the most active. It is unbiased, unaligned, rigorously independent, realistic and fair. We cover Australian wine principally but we extend coverage across the wider world of wine. We taste in a global context, and call things as we see them. The WINEFRONT is run by Campbell Mattinson, Gary Walsh and Mike Bennie. A full history of reviews and articles is available to subscribers via the WINE SEARCHtab.
