OLYMPIANS - WASHINGTON ROWING The University of Washington’s association with Olympic rowing is a long and well-documented one, all the more so in the last couple of years thanks to the overwhelming popularly of Daniel James Brown’s bestseller, “The Boys in the Boat,” the tale of the Husky crew that won Olympic gold in Berlin in 1936.CONIBEAR SHELLHOUSE
About the Shellhouse. UW’s Conibear Shellhouse sits on the shores of Lake Washington and has served as the primary home for Washington Rowing since its construction in 1949. The shellhouse is located “on campus,” only a light 6-8 minute walk from Drumheller Fountain, at the center of the UW academic campus. Named for Hiram Conibear, the BOARD OF ROWING STEWARDS The Board of Washington Rowing Stewards consists of a core group of men and women, representing varying generations and perspectives. The Board assists the coaches and the University in raising money, guiding endowment funds to maximize the opportunities presented by these gifts, and plays a principal role in planning for the future of theprogram.

At stake is the Schoch Cup, named after Delos “Dutch” Schoch of Washington’s class of 1936. The program fosters an environment that for over a century has consistently developed and produced countless National, World and Olympic Champions. Our athletes come from all over the United States and throughout the globe. WASHINGTON ROWING RACE VIEWING Montlake Cut Race Viewing. The Montlake Cut has been the Huskies‘ home course since 1960, and is considered one of the most iconic in collegiate rowing. Anywhere along the Cut provides excellent viewing of the races, but here are three areas that are popular with our fans.Finish Line.
WALK-ONS: A WASHINGTON ROWING TRADITION Walk-Ons: A Washington Rowing Tradition. At the beginning of each season, new members join in workouts with the aim of becoming part of the team. The grueling, long hours of tryouts will separate out those who want to become part of something truly special. This process values the team over the individual. As racing season begins, theteams are

With Washington reeling from the loss of Hiram Conibear in 1917 and the subsequent hiatus created by WWI, Ed Leader’s first and only objective in the spring of 1919 was to make sure the program itself survived. Women were rowing in the early 1900s, but this ended in 1917 due to WWI, lack of administration support, and social pressure (basically too much sweat and competition for women at the time). I started rowing as a freshman in 1970, so I wasn’t quite a pioneer in the 1styear

THE HISTORY OF THE VARSITY BOAT CLUB By 1965 the two-story west wing was added with 24 dormitory rooms. For over 40 years the men’s team lived together at the shellhouse, forming lifelong bonds under the VBC banner. 1969. This was the first year of UW women’s crew in the modern era. Women were rowing in the early 1900s, but this ended in 1917 due to WWI, lack of administration support, and social pressure (basically too much sweat and competition for women at the time). I started rowing as a freshman in 1970, so I wasn’t quite a pioneer in the 1styear

THE HISTORY OF THE VARSITY BOAT CLUB By 1965 the two-story west wing was added with 24 dormitory rooms. For over 40 years the men’s team lived together at the shellhouse, forming lifelong bonds under the VBC banner. About the Shellhouse. UW’s Conibear Shellhouse sits on the shores of Lake Washington and has served as the primary home for Washington Rowing since its construction in 1949. The shellhouse is located “on campus,” only a light 6-8 minute walk from Drumheller Fountain, at the center of the UW academic campus. Named for Hiram Conibear, the BOARD OF ROWING STEWARDS The Board of Washington Rowing Stewards consists of a core group of men and women, representing varying generations and perspectives. The Board assists the coaches and the University in raising money, guiding endowment funds to maximize the opportunities presented by these gifts, and plays a principal role in planning for the future of theprogram.
