The Walk21 conference series supports, encourages and inspires the Global Walking Network to: . Confirm the importance of walking politically and in policy. Provide an international platform for an inclusive discussion. Acknowledge current research, practice and promotion. Identify the need for future research and networking. THE SIDEWALK CHALLENGE Sidewalks are the urban infrastructure that most meet the needs of pedestrians, facilitating walking, socialising and doing business.Yet, in too many cities they either don’t exist at all or are inadequate, fragmented or neglected.ACTIVE ACCESS
Active Access was a European project that Walk21 supported between 2009 and 2012 to increase walking short everyday trips in local areas to benefit health and the economy. The Switch Travel project developed personalised travel planning campaigns in 5 cities to switch short urban car traffic trips to walking and cycling. INTERNATIONAL CHARTER FOR WALKING The International Charter for Walking is a common policy reference that cities, organisations, neighbourhood groups and individuals can sign up to and encourage more everyday walking and greater walkability. Creating healthy, efficient and sustainable communities where people choose to walk.UN HABITAT - WALK21
UN-Habitat provides knowledge, advocacy, and technical assistance to support national governments and local authorities in the development and implementation of sustainable urban mobility plans and investmentstrategies.
SUM4ALL - WALK21
Sustainable Mobility for All (SuM4ALL) is a platform for international cooperation on issues related to transport and sustainable mobility. Established in 2017 and hosted by the World Bank, SuM4All is a global coalition of 55 influential public organizations and private companies with a shared ambition to transform the future of mobility.VIENNA ON FOOT
The city of Vienna aims to further increase the level of walking trips to ensure a combined goal of 80 percent of mobility by the year 2025 being by walking, cycling or public transport.
