BREAKING THE STIGMA AND SILENCE: SUICIDE IN THE SAFETY INDUSTRY A suicide occurs every 11 minutes in the United States. These incidents touch every industry. However, some industries in particular have felt the impact of suicide in recent years—construction, extraction, mining, fishing, farming and forestry. A CDC study found that in 2012 and 2015, suicide rates were highest among males, ages 45–64, in these industries, which tend to be male-dominated. THE IMPORTANCE OF WORKPLACE HEALTH INSURANCE TO KEEP A WORKFORCECOVERED

FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A FIRST RESPONDER: THE TICKING TIME BOMB OFPTSD
As first responders or emergency response team members it has been ingrained into us that you do not show emotion or weakness when it comes to a horrific call. It is ground into you from the beginning (at least when I started nearly three decades ago) that you will see some horrible things. I was told, “Suck it up. You signed up for this. If it bothers you that much, then maybe this isn’t the job for you.” For the majority of my career, which accounts for well over 20,000 calls, I buried and locked away the mental trauma because that is what you are supposed to do. Now, I can tell you how incredibly wrong thatadvice was.
