VOCAL FOLD GRANULOMA The common causes of vocal fold granuloma include: Irritation from a breathing tube (endotracheal intubation trauma) Irritation from excessive vocal fold contact with improper or excessive voice use. Backflow of acidic stomach fluids to the voice box (laryngopharyngeal reflux). (For more information, see Reflux Laryngitis.) SYMPTOMS OF REFLUX LARYNGITIS Red Flag. Noisy breathing (stridor) is a sign of obstruction or narrowing of the laryngeal or tracheal parts of the airway and difficulty passing air. Any breathing difficulty needs immediate medical attention. Key Information. Scary but Short-Lived Sudden difficulty breathing and throat tightness caused by closing off of the airway as a reflex reaction to stomach fluid backflow (laryngospasm TREATMENT OF REFLUX LARYNGITIS Current Clinical Recommendation. Effective medical treatment of voice disorders from backflow of stomach fluid (reflux laryngitis) involves medicines that decrease stomach acid production . These medicines, called proton pump inhibitors or PPIs, are taken twice daily from three to six months. Expectation from Effective Treatment. MYASTHENIA GRAVIS (MG) Myasthenia gravis is felt by most laryngologists to be a rare cause of isolated hoarseness. Some laryngologists have described “isolated” MG of the larynx with hoarseness, vocal fatigue, reduced loudness, difficulty with pitch, and lack of vocal clarity – without any of the other eye, neck, jaw, or facial muscular weakness. TREATMENT – REINKE’S EDEMA Surgical treatment for Reinke’s edema should use precise phonomicrosurgical technique. “Vocal cord / vocal fold stripping” refers to the removal of the top cell layer of the vocal fold (vocal fold epithelium) using microcup forceps. UNDERSTANDING LARYNGEAL ADVANCED CANCER The first letter, “T”, stands for the tumor itself and describes the size and extent of the original tumor (primary tumor). While tumors in other sites of the head and neck are mainly described using the T for different sizes of tumors, for laryngeal cancers, the T stands for which region and how many regions of the larynx are affected by cancer growth. June 2 – June 6, 2021. We recognize unpredictable nature of COVID-19 and thus, our plans for the 2021 Annual Symposium are to hold an extensiv e virtual symposium. Symposium Program. 51st Annual Symposium: Care SYMPTOMS OF VOCAL FOLD GRANULOMA Patients with vocal fold granuloma usually complain of (A) problems with their voice, and/or (B) some form of throat discomfort. Voice Complaints (Symptoms) Abnormal Event. Patient Complaints. Granuloma interferes with vocal fold function (adequate closure and/or vibration) and impairs sound production. Hoarse or rough voice. BREATHE AND SPEAK WITH EASE Allow your breath (not your mind) to dictate your rate of breathing/speaking. 10. Trust that your intentions will dictate your breath rhythm. Note: Abdominal muscles contract if you speak on extended breath spans. Practice using shorter breath spans to avoid both abdominal and throat tightening. Release your abdominal musclesat the end of the

SPASMODIC DYSPHONIA
Spasmodic dysphonia is a voice disorder resulting from involuntary movements (or spasms) of the voice box muscles. These spasms interrupt normal voice (dysphonia) in “abrupt spurts” with a strained, strangled voice, with breathy, soundless voice, or with a mixture of both. SD is a type of dystonia, a disorder of the central nervoussystem

Hola invitamos a todos los cantantes, actores, locutores, maestros de canto SYMPTOMS – ADVANCED LARYNGEAL CANCER The usual symptom is a prolonged voice change, such as hoarseness, lasting for more than one to two months. Breathy Voice. In advanced laryngeal cancer involving the vocal folds, the voice may be breathy due to impaired movement or complete paralysis of one of the vocalfolds.
TREATMENT OF SPASMODIC DYSPHONIA Injections can improve voice from a score of 5 (Ad-SD without treatment) to 9 after treatment. Benefit lasts about 15 weeks. Ab-SD. (usually harder to treat) Lower improvement rating: Usually voice improves from a score of 5 (Ab-SD without treatment) to 7 after treatment. Benefit lasts about 10 weeks. TREATMENT OF REFLUX LARYNGITIS Current Clinical Recommendation. Effective medical treatment of voice disorders from backflow of stomach fluid (reflux laryngitis) involves medicines that decrease stomach acid production . These medicines, called proton pump inhibitors or PPIs, are taken twice daily from three to six months. Expectation from Effective Treatment. STROKE - VOICE FOUNDATION Stroke results from interrupted blood flow to the brain or brainstem and is generally seen in males above the age of 50. The risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and vascular disease. What are the typical symptoms of voice dysfunction in patients with stroke? UNDERSTANDING PHONOMICROSURGERY Phonomicrosurgery is a key surgical treatment for certain voice disorders. Phonomicrosurgery is usually performed through a rigid tube called a laryngoscope that is inserted through the mouth. This tube provides an avenue for the microscope viewing field, as well DIAGNOSIS OF VOCAL FOLD NODULES, CYSTS, POLYPS The subtle variations among vocal nodules, polyps, and cysts make accurate diagnosis a challenge – especially when swelling is also present. Because most otolaryngologists treat vocal fold nodules with voice therapy and rest, but treat vocal fold cysts or polyps with surgery, the importance of making an accurate diagnosis cannot be TREATMENT – REINKE’S EDEMA Surgical treatment for Reinke’s edema should use precise phonomicrosurgical technique. “Vocal cord / vocal fold stripping” refers to the removal of the top cell layer of the vocal fold (vocal fold epithelium) using microcup forceps. * Skip to primary navigation* Skip to content
