SIMPLE HANDMADE JOURNAL Measure the height and width of the signature. Cut heavy cover paper the same height at the signature and 4 times the width. Fold book cover in half. Open signature to the center and mark 4 sewing holes, the 1st hole at 1/2″ or 25mm from top, 4th hole 1/2″ or 25mm from the bottom and the remaining 2 stitches are spaced evenly. HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN BOOK CLOTH Sumi sketch paper or other lightweight paper, such as mulberry or copier paper. Non-stick surface, such as plexiglass, teflon/silicone mat or freezer paper. Large piece of cardboard. 2 Glue brushes (I use inexpensive 2” bristle brushes) Batch of wheat SEWN BOARDS SKETCH BOOK The book block has alternating signatures of sketch paper and watercolor paper, and it’s sewn together with an unsupported French link stitch. AWESOME BOOKBINDING VIDEOS In this series of videos Sage shows how to create a hardcover or case bound book. His pages are pre-printed but the method is the same if your pages are blank. I admit that there are a lot of videos to watch, but trust me, it’s worth it. If you’re impatient, like me, you can always watch them at x1.5 or x2 time speed. Sewing Signatures Part 1. PUNCHING CRADLE TUTORIAL 3. Add Ends. Fold the hinged boards to 45 degrees and dab a generous amount of glue to the ends. Attach the glued cradle body to the top corners of one end boards – the 6″ edge. Repeat at the other end. 4. Add Braces. Apply glue to 2 braces and attach them underneath the cradle to support it. Repeat at other end. 10 AWESOME GELLI PRINTING VIDEOS Gelli Arts, the makers of the Gelli Plate, produce great videos. Two of my favorites demonstrate how to stamp with their plates. Gelli Stamping Layered Circles uses 3 sizes of the round gelli plates together with stencils and texture tools to create a colorful, layered journal page. Stamping with Gelli uses the smaller 5″ x 7″ and3″ x 5
HOW TO CHOOSE PAPER FOR YOUR HANDMADE BOOKS The most important thing to decide upon when choosing the paper weight is what medium you plan to use. If it’s a dry medium, such as pencil, graphite or colored pencil, use a text weight paper (70lb/105gsm), sketch or drawing paper. If you plan to use pens, markers or fountain pens, then choose a heavier weight version(80lb/130gsm).
5 NEW WAYS TO USE INK SPRAYS Watercolor Wash. Spray a small amount of one or two inks onto a palette or plastic plate. Lightly mist a piece of watercolor paper with water. Use a flat, moistened brush to apply a thin layer (wash) of the first color onto the paper. Clean brush in fresh water and apply another thin layer of the second color, blending them where theymeet.
