CREDIT: Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP/Shutterstock Natalie Portman has responded to Rose McGowan ’s social mediacritique
of her red carpet protest at the Oscars. The “Black Swan” star created a stir with her decision to wear a black and gold Dior dress that included a cape embroidered with the names of snubbed femaledirectors.
However, her act of haute couture defiance didn’t sit well with McGowan, who called Portman a “fraud” and said wearing the cloak wasn’t an act of bravery, it was, “More like an actress acting the part of someone who cares.” In a statement, Portman agreed with McGowan that she didn’t deserve to be called brave. “I agree with Ms. McGowan that it is inaccurate to call me ‘brave’ for wearing a garment with women’s names on it,” Portman said. “Brave is a term I more strongly associate with actions like those of the women who have been testifying against Harvey Weinstein the last few weeks, under incredible pressure.” McGowan accused Weinstein of raping her at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival, one of dozens of claims against the former movie mogul. She later reached a $100,000 settlement with him. In her post, McGowan implied that Portman only paid lip service to working with female filmmakers, but noted that she had only worked with a few female directors over the course of her career.POPULAR ON VARIETY

“I find Portman’s type of activism deeply offensive to those of us who actually do the work. I’m not writing this out of bitterness, I am writing out of disgust. I just want her and other actresses to walk the walk,” McGowan wrote on Facebook. “Natalie, you have worked with two female directors in your very long career- one of them was you. You have a production company that has hired exactly one femaledirector- you.”
Portman went on to state that she hoped that the industry would begin to offer more opportunities for women to direct movies. “The past few years have seen a blossoming of directing opportunities for women due to the collective efforts of many people who have been calling out the system,” Portman said. “The gift has been these incredible films. I hope that what was intended as a simple nod to them does not distract from their great achievements. It is true I’ve only made a few films with women. In my long career, I’ve only gotten the chance to work with female directors a few times – I’ve made shorts, commercials, music videos and features with Marya Cohen, Mira Nair, Rebecca Zlotowski, Anna Rose Holmer, Sofia Coppola, Shirin Neshat and myself. Unfortunately, the unmade films I have tried to make are a ghost history.” This year’s Academy Awards were sharply criticized for not highlighting more films from women, with acclaimed works such as Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” failing to score directing nominations. Portman went on to cite studies from Stacy Smith of USC, who has chronicled the lack of studio movies made by women, to claim that films from female filmmakers have a harder time getting greenlit orfinanced.
“If these films do get made, women face enormous challenges during the making of them. I have had the experience a few times of helping get female directors hired on projects which they were then forced out of because of the conditions they faced at work,” Portman said. “After they are made, female-directed films face difficulty getting into festivals, getting distribution and getting accolades because of the gatekeepers at every level. So I want to say, I have tried, and I will keep trying. While I have not yet been successful, I am hopeful that we are stepping into a new day.”Leave a Reply32

February 13, 2020 at 1:29 am I’ve noticed White women in Hollywood have conveniently dedicated more time discussing Gerwig being snubbed for best director rather than the fact that only 1 of the 20 acting nominees was a POC. The thing is, because White women receive the majority of acting nominations and wins, they take that significant form of representation for granted. In addition, White women (who took home 11 Oscars last night) have been well represented in behind the scene categories like costume design, make up/hair, set decoration, etc, and they’re increasingly being recognized as producers and writers, so they have increasingly turned their attention to the directing category because it’s the category that most eludes White women. However, fixating so much attention on a single category (and over Gerwig) is in many ways a disservice to POC who struggle with representation across the board. In addition, reducing the issue to gender is problematic because men of color are also underrepresented. Bear in mind, MOC tend to do a much better job with the representation of WOC than White female filmmakers (Peele/US vs Gerwig/Little Women). So if someone truly cared about POC they wouldn’t adopt a dismissive attitude towards filmmakers of color solely because of their gender. Portman herself was actually one of those individuals (including Emma Stone) who threw shade on Peele back in ’18 because he was male and a nominee, even though a Black male has never won best director and the film he was nominated for was one of the most socially relevant of the year. Bear in mind, Portman wasn’t complaining about lack of representation when she won an Oscar in a category with all White female nominees. Nor did she have a problem with accepting a White washed role (originally written as Asian) in a previous film. If Gerwig/ Little Women had won every award that Bong Joon Ho and Parasite did, I can guarantee White women in Hollywood would have viewed it as a cause for celebration and claimed it as a victory on behalf of women even though White women would have been the only beneficieries and it would have meant less representation for POC (this scenario has actually played out in a recent awards show) There are many white women working in Hollywood, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, their struggle is more so getting executives to hand them the reins in high profile projects– and they hold real leverage because many of them hold an “A lister” status. But for POC this issue is much bigger and more pervasive as they struggle just with getting their foot in the door and being seen on camera. So I just think people should have pause about allowing White women in Hollywood to drive the narrative (oftentimes for self serving reasons) on a complex issue like representation, especially when they haven’t been great allies to POC in the past, continue to have blinders on when it comes to the issues POC face, and oftentimes even undermine them with their form of activism. For the record, I posted a similar comment like this before, but it was deleted without justification (I’m trying to have a constructive dialogue here). Please don’t censor me.Reply

February 12, 2020 at 11:31 pm Thank you for being a lady, Ms Portman. I’ve been reading up on Rose’s claims and have to say that I am highly doubtful of her claim. From what I’ve ready she reached out to her manager at the time, and communicated she regretted her choice in being with Weinstein (sp?) in his hot tub. Her manager still followed HR procedures and brought the matter to the higher ups attention. Years later, Rose changes it to rape and then the manager, feeling despondent over it/severe depression, commits suicide.Reply

February 12, 2020 at 10:26 pm I actually see Rose’s point. Talking the talk and walking the walk are two different things. Actions speak louder than words. BUT come on, to say that those women were entitled to Oscar nominations is ridiculous. Just because you made a good film does not mean it’s Oscar caliber. These were these women’s first and second films!! They should come back in a decade or two after putting in the real time to master their crafts before demanding an Oscar!Reply

But, Natalie, it’s laughable to claim that female-directed movies have a hard time getting into festivals because of so-called ‘gatekeepers’. Puh-leeze! Try some smelling salts. Hollywood is a business. It lives and dies by how well its movies fare in the marketplace, and as such it’s a meritocracy. To suggest that accomplished directors like Scorcese, Tarantino, Mendes, Phillips, and now Bong Jun-Ho were not the most deserving nominees this past year is a bit insulting to the industry. Are you suggesting that the Academy should implement quotas?Reply

Why reply to a washed up Twitter troll? That is all she is. And then she had an affair with a married male director, a man with 4 or 5 kids, helping to break up his marriage. Let she who doesn’t shaft other woman cast the firststone.

February 12, 2020 at 9:28 pm McGowan is a psychotic narcissist. I don’t particularly like Portman (although she is a good actress), but I am surprised that she felt compelled to reply. Why reply to a washed up Twitter troll? That is all she is. She will never act again, and she is scraping together a living by shrieking on social media so she can sell her book that no one cares about. Troll culture is bad enough but it is sick that desperate people are fueling it just to put some money in theirpocket.

February 12, 2020 at 5:33 pm I am sick to death of McGowan’s holier than thou attitude. Perhaps if she hadn’t sold out to Weinstein, she could have prevented another woman from being raped. Put up or shut up Rose. At leastPortman has class.

February 12, 2020 at 4:29 pm “Natalie Portman Responds to Rose McGowan’s Criticism of Her OscarDress”
One of the major problems with what McGowan is doing is that, she is supposed to uplift women and is disparaging them instead, since she cannot talk to them herself personally. That she has to resort going to the media to sound her grievances as opposed to talking to them directly. I mean, who would want to be friends, converse or work with her if he is going to criticize them for every type of thing they do.Reply

February 12, 2020 at 3:40 pm Kudos to Ms. Portman’ publicist for the well crafted response that, despite her much lauded Harvard education, Natalie would have neverthought up herself.

'SONIC THE HEDGEHOG': FILM REVIEW For all the kerfuffle that erupted in the spring of 2019 over the visual design of Sonic the Hedgehog, the blue-furred speed-demon mascot of the Sega video game–turned–live-action kiddie adventure, you wish that the creators of “Sonic the Hedgehog,” who went back and redesigned the character after being pressured (I almost wrotebullied) by his

'CODED BIAS': FILM REVIEW By its very nature, science is supposed to be an impartial judge. But is it really? In her thought-provoking documentary “Coded Bias,” director Shalini Kantayya questions the neutrality of technology, arguing that computers have a built-in bias that reflects the faulty assumptions of the people (usually men) who program them.
