NEIGHBORHOODS NOW
A collaboration between the Urban Design Forum and Van Alen Institute, Neighborhoods Now connects New York City neighborhoods hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic with design firms in our collective network. Launched in May 2020, Neighborhoods Now initially convened eight working groups led by community organizations in Bed-Stuy, Jackson Heights, Kingsbridge, the Lower East Side, andBREATHING PAVILION
Breathing Pavilion comprised a 30-foot circle of 20 nine-foot two-tone illuminated inflatable columns. These columns slowly modulated in brightness to illustrate a deep breathing technique designed to bring calm. Visitors were invited to breathe in time with the changing light and attune themselves to a shared rhythm of respite. KEEPING CURRENT: NORTH MIAMI Keeping Current: A Sea Level Rise Challenge for Greater Miami is a series of open design competitions inviting interdisciplinary teams to develop solutions and ideas using the lenses of economy, ecology, and equity to adapt to sea level rise.. V. Mitch McEwen is an Assistant Professor at Princeton University School of Architecture and partner of A(n) Office. She joined the faculty at Princeton after relocating from Detroit, where she had been teaching at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning since 2014. She is principal of McEwen Studio and co-founder GATEWAYS TO CHINATOWN Gateways to Chinatown. Gateways to Chinatown. 2017. Gateways to Chinatown is an initiative seeking innovative proposals to plan, design and construct a symbolic and functional landmark at the nexus of Manhattan’s Chinatown and the southern entrance to Little Italy’s historic Mulberry and Mott Streets. BYRON BELL, EMERITUS Byron Bell is a Registered Architect in the States of Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York as well as a Registered Planner in the State of New Jersey. He received his B.A. from Princeton University in 1957 and his M. Arch. from Columbia University in 1962. Elaine Molinar began her career as a designer of the Alexandria Library in Egypt after participating in the initial conception for Snøhetta’s winning competition entry. Throughout her time with Snøhetta, Elaine has held key positions in major cultural projects and competitions in the Middle East, Europe and the United States. She currently leads general management, HANA KASSEMEXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBER An accomplished architect, Hana Kassem brings more than 20 years of design experience to her projects. Since joining KPF in 2001, she has led design teams for a variety of project types and in locations around the world. Hana’s design experience transcends international boundaries. Andrew Brown is a researcher trained in empirical analysis of programs and public policy. At Van Alen, Andrew oversees projects that explore the relationship between mental well-being and cities, and develops workshops that convene stakeholders to design strategies to urgent problems.
