UK FOUNTAIN PENS
It's shaping up to be a very exciting month for my doormat. Teal Breaker: get in while you can Do you like the sound of a limited edition John Garnham pen, produced in a custom hand-poured teal-and-red resin to match a bespoke sheening ink from Diamine called"Teal Breaker"?
BUILDING AN INTERESTING PEN COLLECTION WITHOUT BREAKING Building an interesting pen collection without breaking the bank. Yesterday I was talking to one of my work colleagues, and this hobby of mine came up. He is not a fountain pen user, and he, like most normal people, thinks it’s crazy how much I’ll merrily spend on a single pen. His favourite and most luxurious rollerballs are £4. CLEO SKRIBENT’S RARE NATURA The Natura is about £500. Let’s take a tour. This is a good-looking pen. It’s long and slim, but not ungainly. The palladium plated trim and steel breaks up the wood. You can see the interesting articulated Cleo clip, which works well. On the top of the cap is the Cleo C logo, with wood visible beneath. SHIMMERING SILVER: THE MONTBLANC MARTELE And most recently, the Martele. I guess that makes me a bit of a weirdo. Anyway. The Martele is 146-sized, very similar to the Geometry in fact, and also very Heavy Metal. The barrel and cap are made from thick hammered silver, which set my heart on fire the first time I came across it. Let me be really clear: the silver finish is thereason to
TRUE GRAILS
A grail pen shouldn’t just be “any pen that I really want” or “any pen I can’t afford”. And there are plenty of those for me, from the Montblanc Martele to the Namiki Emperor. No, to me a grail pen has to be a bit harder to get hold of, and not just in a monetary sense. Something that takes hard work, time and ingenuity (even a ROMILLO | UK FOUNTAIN PENS I often write about American or Japanese brands, or the big familiar European companies like Pelikan, Lamy and Montblanc. But in Europe we're blessed with many wonderful makers producing innovative and beautiful (and often expensive) pens in small numbers. They don't advertise; word spreads only at pen shows, on FPN, and on Instagram— so .
PLATINUM IZUMO: ACCESSIBLE URUSHI The Izumo is a good-looking pen when capped. The cap is huge. The clip mirrors the shape of the pen, pleasingly. The whole pen curves naturally, and the urushi finish (my sample is the akatame, which shades to red) is lovely. The pen is a joy to hold. In the hand, the Izumo is much more substantial than a Nakaya: it weighs about twice asmuch
THE SURPRISING ‘SKRIBENT’ FROM GERMANY Cleo is a German company and a cursory read of its website will leave you in no doubt that it’s extremely proud of its manufacturing quality. And this, the confusingly named ‘Skribent’, is Cleo’s flagship pen. At an RRP of around £300, that puts it squarely up against the Pelikan M800, although considerably short of the £490Montblanc
THREE MINI-REVIEWS IN ONE: FINE WRITING FENESTRO KUROSHIO Sometimes I don't see myself writing a full review of a pen, but I have some things I want to say about it. So here you go: three reviews in one. Fine Writing Fenestro Kuroshio I bought this pen from Write Here. You can get it here, for a hair under £95. What's good about I’M CONFUSED AS HELL WHY I LIKE THE EDISON BEAUMONT SO I’m confused as hell why I like the Edison Beaumont so much. Here’s the backstory. I’ve wanted an Edison Collier for a long time, but never quite got around to pulling the trigger before the gold nib frenzy stole me away. A guy on Facebook (hi Nick!) posted an Edison Beaumont for sale for £75 (about half retail) a month or soback.

PLENTY OF PASSION IN THE LEONARDO FURORE GRANDE The Furore Grande is the torpedo-ended version of Leonardo’s large-sized pen, and it’s very similar to the cone-ended Momento Zero Grande. For your 300 euros you get a large turned pen with in-house piston filler, ebonite feed, and steel nib, wrapped up in a handsome gift box with a bottle of blue Leonardo ink. And, yes, rounded ends.
THE BEAUTIFUL BONONIA FROM TIBALDI The beautiful Bononia from Tibaldi. 5th Nov 2020. 5th Nov 2020. / Anthony. The Bononia is a new release for Tibaldi, and as of time of writing this is the first published review. SCRIBO’S STILL GOT IT: WRITE HERE TROPEA Scribo’s still got it: Write Here Tropea. The TL;DR of this review: this is the same pen as the marvellous Scribo 3 I reviewed almost a year ago to the day, but in a gorgeous wine-red purple, the colour of plums or red onions. It’s brilliant, an edition of 50, and £100 cheaper than a Scribo Feel. If you’re on the fence about a Scribo OTTO HUTT’S DESIGN04 IS SLIM, BUT BIG ON FUN Otto Hutt feels like a brand that’s found its swagger. HOW I DO INK SWATCHES When you have 200+ inks, it's all too easy to find yourself picking up a bottle and having no recollection of the ink at all. You uncap it, and all you see is some dark, shiny liquid. Hmmm. If only there was some way to keep a a record of how each ink looks on CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR? GETTING TO GRIPS WITH THE CONWAY Length is not a problem, if the weight is OK. However, the Winston is not just big, it’s heavy, too. The barrel is lined with brass: And the barrel is therefore much heavier than the section. The balance point is around 2/3 back from the nib. In the hand, you can really feel the weight hanging over the back of I’M IN LOVE WITH THE PILOT 912 It's very easy to wax lyrical about the Pilot Custom Heritage 912, particularly with the FA (Falcon) nib. Over the past six months, I've mentioned it several times — always favourably. In fact, it might just be my favourite pen. Here are five things I love GOING LARGE(ISH) WITH THE PLATINUM PRESIDENT Going large (ish) with the Platinum President. 21st Jan 2019 / Anthony. The Platinum President (PTB-20000P) is one of those pens that nobody knows about. Its value proposition is simple: it’s a slightly fancier, larger version of the 3776, with a more western-tuned nib, now in 18k gold. The only downside, on paper, is that it lacks the3776
TWO NIBS THAT ARE FINER THAN FINE: FPNIBS XXF, PLATINUM Which you may be tempted to do: there are precious few pens available from the factory even in conventional EF nowadays, so to have a UEF available from Platinum for about 70 quid is pretty sensational. Yep, those are standard Rhodia dots! So, two great options for needle-lovers in Europe. Pablo will also grind TWSBI nibs, so forexample an XXF

If you’re on the fence about a Scribo FLYING HIGH WITH THE ONOTO SPITFIRE A 'tribute' pen is a dangerous thing. Look at something like Montegrappa's Apollo 11 moon landing pens: I confess that I quite want one, but nevertheless they come across like cheap toys, even when the top-tier edition costs an eye-watering £6,000. Image credit: Iguanasell It's not just Montegrappa's usual over-the-top style, either. And this, the confusingly named ‘Skribent’, is Cleo’s flagship pen. At an RRP of around £300, that puts it squarely up against the Pelikan M800, although considerably short of the £490Montblanc
ITALY’S DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH: SANTINI It costs 230 euros. The Santini packaging is simple: a nice cardboard box with the logo in gold. Inside is the pen. The Toscana is a chunky pen, with plenty of gold trim. The material looks like burnt caramel, like a darker version of the Estie Honeycomb. It looks great, with tons of depth to it.

GETTING TO GRIPS WITH THE OTTO HUTT DESIGN08 I waited a long time for the Otto Hutt design08. The fiesty German manufacturer's wares have crossed my desk multiple times: I've reviewed the 03, 04, 06 and the flagship 07 too. Each pen model I tried was interesting, admirable, even exceptional, but not quite right for me personally. Then along came the designC. It's JUN | 2021 | UK FOUNTAIN PENS I waited a long time for the Otto Hutt design08. The fiesty German manufacturer's wares have crossed my desk multiple times: I've reviewed the 03, 04, 06 and the flagship 07 too. ROMILLO | UK FOUNTAIN PENS I often write about American or Japanese brands, or the big familiar European companies like Pelikan, Lamy and Montblanc. But in Europe we're blessed with many wonderful makers producing innovative and beautiful (and often expensive) pens in small numbers. They don't advertise; word spreads only at pen shows, on FPN, and on Instagram— so .
What's good about SCRIBO? “FEEL THE WRITING” IS SPOT ON The Scribo 3 is the third release of Italian brand Scri ttura Bo lognese’s collaboration with stalwart UK pen shop, Write Here, who kindly sent me one to review. If you know Scribo, it’s probably through seeing the company’s “Feel” pen, which is faceted and bulging like a Zeppelin, and available from many different retailersaround
11 PHENOMENAL STUBS AND ITALICS FOR ANY BUDGET Stubs and italics are taking over my pen collection. Why? Well, I like line variation and, being a lefty, flex is not easy for me. But I have a light touch and a fairly consistent writing angle, so it's easy for me to skate even the sharpest italic across the page. You can makepretty
THE LEONARDO MOMENTO ZERO IS SIMPLY FABULOUS The Zero has perfect proportions, and it’s polished to a high shine. It’s not a heavy pen, but everything fits together just so. You can feel that it’s been turned, not cast, and the walls of the barrel and cap are reassuringly thick. Aside from the fact that it’s a turned pen, there are plenty of intricacies that make you quickly CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR? GETTING TO GRIPS WITH THE CONWAY Length is not a problem, if the weight is OK. PLENTY OF PASSION IN THE LEONARDO FURORE GRANDE It’s easy to see why Leonardo is one of the modern darlings of the fountain pen scene. From the first Momento Zero, which I reviewed back in 2018, the Italian company has kept up a breakneck pace of releases, with dozens of pretty resins, ebonite, arco, Grande models, music nibs, and the release of an in-house piston filler — many at surprisingly accessible prices.MY TOP 3 PENS
It’s been going on a while, but Joost from Appelboom’s ‘top 3 fountain pen’ video series has just landed on my radar. The premise is simple: ask pen-celebrities like Figboot, Azizah, SBRE Brown, Scrively and Brad Dowdy to record videos talking for about 15 minutes about their top three pens. CLEO SKRIBENT’S RARE NATURA Some brands just fly under the radar. Cleo Skribent, as I've written before, is one such brand. Hardly anyone in the English speaking pen community seems to own one or talk about the brand. That makes this pen particularly exclusive, because it's perhaps Cleo's most rare and expensive model, the Natura. Until Write Here loaned SHIMMERING SILVER: THE MONTBLANC MARTELE I'm a bit out of practice at writing reviews, but I felt an impulse to put something to paper about the Montblanc Martele. I've owned this beast of a pen for a few months now, and I realised that I keep wanting to write with it every day, leaving all my other pens togather

PLATINUM IZUMO: ACCESSIBLE URUSHI I confess: I started out biased against the Platinum Izumo, based on pictures on the internet and five minutes handling one in a pen shop. Its value proposition is simple: it's a slightly fancier, larger version of the 3776, with a more western-tuned nib, now in 18k gold. The only downside, on paper, is that it lacks the 3776's wonderful sealing cap, but in all other respects THE CONID KINGSIZE IS AS GOOD AS EVERYONE SAYS One of my most popular and contentious posts recently was my review of the Conid Minimalistica Monarch. But the … Continue reading Finding joy inblack ink
