Guests from Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Tsusho Corporation also attended the ceremony, along with dealers, suppliers and employees of IMC. Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Miyazaki said, “I would like to express my sincere congratulations on this memorable event to Mr. Ali Habib, Chairman of IMC and to everyone who contributed to this great achievement. We have had a great partnership for 30 years and during my visit I was truly convinced, how trusted and established Toyota brand is among Pakistani customers. This achievement is outcome of outstanding effort of IMC management and the members as well as dealers and suppliers.” He further added, “The market will become increasingly tough due to new entrants; we expect to overcome the difficulty as one team. We as Toyota will try our best to introduce better models into the market and I would like to ask IMC to try best to deliver the quality vehicle to every single customer. Pakistan’s market has a great potential and we have high expectations for it. Although current automotive market is facing the crisis situation, we are more than confident that the market will strongly grow again in near future.” In his remarks, Mr. Ali Habib, the Chairman of IMC said, “For me personally this 30 year journey has been a tremendous learning of The Toyota Way, it has been a true privilege and honor. When Tatsuro Toyoda San inaugurated the facility here, he made a very important comment which has been true, and this was that Toyota’s investment in Indus Motor Company was not just an investment but it was an investment in Pakistan and that indeed is true by the transfer of technology not only here but throughout our network of dealers andsuppliers.”
He added, “The localization achieved would not have been possible without the constant support and endeavors of our partners at Toyota Tsusho, so thank you TTC. Ever since we started, we have maintained a market leadership in our category. We have the capacity but more importantly, the team has the passion and the heart.” The company started its operations in 1989 as a joint venture between the House of Habib, Toyota Tsusho and Toyota Motor Corporation. Indus Motor Co. is the authorized assembler and manufacturer of Toyota vehicles, auto parts and accessories in Pakistan. IMC’S ACCELERATES THE MILLION TREE DRIVE KARACHI, NOV 8, 2019: Indus Motor Company accelerates the million tree plantation drive. Over 150 employees from Indus Motor Company and Thal Boshoku Pakistan carried out the tree plantation activity on Nov 7, 2019 in front of Thal Boshuko, which is spread over 5 acres, situatedin Port Qasim.
The activity is a part of IMC’s ‘Million Tree Drive’ in which they have so far planted more than 300,000 trees. In his remarks on the company’s on-going tree plantation drive, the CEO of IMC, Ali Asghar Jamali said, “The Million Tree Drive represents IMC’s commitment to support the government’s Clean and Green Pakistan Movement. We strive to bring down CO2 emissions from factories to zero as part of Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050. In pursuance of this, we have pledged to plant one million trees acrossPakistan.”
As an active signatory of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), IMC has underscored its contribution towards achieving the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs). The IMC’s ‘Million Tree Plantation’ project is also moving forward with the long-term aim of protecting the land against erosion, turning the country’s barren landscape into forests, enhancing rainfall prospects and helping mitigate the effects of climate change on ecosystems and biodiversity of the country. NO LAYOFFS DESPITE SLOWDOWN, SAYS IMC KARACHI, OCTOBER 25, 2019: Indus Motor Company (IMC) has announced that there will be no layoff of employees despite slowdown inproduction.
IMC has resumed production to 50% capacity from October 1 after a closure over the last 15 days of September. “The country is going through an economic slowdown and the overall market has remained volatile. This has indeed been a great struggle. The factors largely contributing to this include Rupee depreciation, reduction in car financing, increase in Federal excise duties (FED) and higher input costs,” said a spokesman of IMC. “Over a 12-month period, the rupee depreciated over 31.6%. Additionally, the Government of Pakistan has imposed 7% ACD, 3% additional sales tax on all imports and 7.5% FED for vehicles of 2000cc and above. There is also a fresh Federal Excise Duty of 2.5% and 5% FED on locally manufactured vehicles. All this is having an adverse impact on the auto sector and has resulted in a major decline in sales. Of the total cost of a vehicle, 40% comprises the taxes and levies imposed by the government. It is a misconception that the rising rate of tax collection will not affect vehicle sales and total tax collection; in fact, the decline in sales will result in decline in tax collection from the auto sector,” he added. “Yet, we have decided not to go for layoffs despite the hard times. We are absorbing this financial crunch,” he said. A general perception exists in Pakistan that cars assembled locally have gradually become expensive without any value addition. The prices of cars have not increased but have been adjusted according to the depreciation of the Pakistani rupee against the dollar. Prices have, in fact, been reduced by the manufacturers but it seems as if they have increased since the PKR is depreciating in relation to the US dollar and the customer is paying more in rupee terms. The spokesperson pointed out that with every model change; IMC has successfully incorporated more localization, increased specifications and reduced the dollarized cost by procuring local parts worth over PKR 200+ million every working day. The spokesman added that in 1993, the price of Corolla was $19,630 with 15% GST and the PKR value was Rs.27 against the dollar. Now, in 2019, the same Corolla is available for $15,618 despite 17% sales tax and 5% FED while the PKR value against the dollar is Rs.160. This means better specifications at low price. He said this clearly showed that over the years, IMC had localized more and sustained the burden of heavy taxation and PKR devaluation to keep providing quality vehicles at low prices to its valued customers.
