Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Thyroiditis, or inflammation of the thyroid gland, has many causes. The most common cause is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, first described by Dr Hashimoto in Japan. This is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the thyroid gland caused by abnormal blood antibodies and white blood cells attacking and damaging thyroidcells.
HYPERTHYROIDISM (THYROTOXICOSIS) The symptoms and signs of Graves’ hyperthyroidism are due to the effects of excess amounts of thyroid hormone on body function and metabolism. Common symptoms include weight loss, nervousness, irritability, intolerance to hot weather, excessive sweating, shakiness, and muscle weakness. It is very sensitive, and provides precise information about the size and shape of the thyroid gland and nodules. SURGICAL TREATMENT OF THYROID DISEASE The surgical treatment is carried out through a relatively short incision in the lower central portion of the neck. The thyroid gland is made up of two symmetrical lobes. Where there is an enlargement of both lobes, malignancy or Graves’ disease, removal of most of the thyroid gland may be required. Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer is a rare type of cancer with a poor prognosis. Occasionally individuals develop lymphoma of the thyroid gland or with metastasis from other cancer types. Medullary Thyroid Cancer is a rare tumor, arising not from the follicular cells that produce the thyroid hormone but from C-cells which are also present inthe thyroid.
